Download or read book Once Upon a Time in Delaware written by Katharine Pyle and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Once Upon a Time in Delaware' is a collection of stories about the state of Delaware; both fiction and non-fiction. This book is published by the Delaware Society of the Colonial Dames of America for the use, primarily, of the children of Delaware, in school and out. Its style and matter are therefore chosen to suit young readers. Many historical points in these stories are more or less disputed. The original sources do not always agree. In preparing these stories of Delaware for children's reading, it has been thought best to use anecdotes and interesting traditions whenever they could be found. The result is a substantially true set of stories, which do not however, undertake to settle the facts in any disputed case, but are designed to leave in a child's mind the broad outlines of Delaware history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Delaware takes the reader on a journey through the coastal beauty of the state, from the Twelve-Mile Circle to the Nanticoke River. Although Delaware is the second smallest state in terms of area, the guide offers 27 driving tours accompanied by engaging photographs and pen-and-ink drawings. Published in 1938, this guide to the First State, also details Delaware’s rich history.
Book Synopsis Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford by : Dr Thomas Recchio
Download or read book Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford written by Dr Thomas Recchio and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the publishing history of Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford from its initial 1851-53 serialization in Dickens's Household Words through its numerous editions and adaptations, Thomas Recchio focuses especially on how the text has been deployed to support ideas related to nation and national identity. Recchio maps Cranford's nineteenth-century reception in Britain and the United States through illustrated editions in England dating from 1864 and their subsequent re-publication in the United States, US school editions in the first two decades of the twentieth century, dramatic adaptations from 1899 to 2007, and Anglo-American literary criticism in the latter half of the twentieth century. Making extensive use of primary materials, Recchio considers Cranford within the context of the Victorian periodical press, contemporary reviews, theories of text and word relationships in illustrated books, community theater, and digital media. In addition to being a detailed publishing history that emphasizes the material forms of the book and its adaptations, Recchio's book is a narrative of Cranford's evolution from an auto-ethnography of a receding mid-Victorian English way of life to a novel that was deployed as a maternal model to define an American sensibility for early twentieth-century Mediterranean and Eastern European immigrants. While focusing on one novel, Recchio offers a convincing micro-history of the way English literature was positioned in England and the United States to support an Anglo-centric cultural project, to resist the emergence of multicultural societies, and to ensure an unchanging notion of a stable English culture on both sides of the Atlantic.
Book Synopsis Wilmington's Waterfront by : Priscilla M. Thompson
Download or read book Wilmington's Waterfront written by Priscilla M. Thompson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilmingtonas Waterfront tells the story of what has happened along the Brandywine and Christina rivers in Wilmington. These two rivers encompass downtown Wilmington and have been the lifeblood of the city ever since they provided a pathway for its Swedish settlers. With their perpetual rise and fall of tide, ceaseless source of power, and never-ending supply of water, the rivers have seen the growth and decline of industry, nurture and neglect by government, and respect and rejection by residents. In 1979 and 1980, the authors visited every inch of both sides of the rivers, taking photographs, making notes, and doing historical and environmental research. Their efforts resulted in Project R.O.W. (Reclaim Our Waterfront), a detailed report funded by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In this book, Priscilla M. Thompson and Sally OaByrne invite you to join them on a pictorial tour of Wilmingtonas waterfront. Through their collection of photographs, etchings, and lithographs showing waterfront recreation and industries, you will discover shipbuilding companies, steamboat excursions, parks, waterworks, bridge dedications, and all the landmarks and activities that are a part of the Wilmington waterfrontas past.
