Book excerpt: Both steel-epoxy and fiberglass-epoxy composite crossplied plates were impacted with blunt ended cylindrical impactors at velocities below the critical penetration velocity. Failure mechanisms in the form of lamina delamination were observed for thirteen different types of ply arrangements. Lamina delamination was found to be the dominant failure mode and fiber breakage or pullout occurred only in the area in direct contact with the impactor. It was found for impacted fiberglass-epoxy plates that the number of plies within a given lamina, especially the first several laminae, are very important in the resulting progressive delamination. The extent of the damage appears to be related to kinetic energy imparted to the plate by the impactor. (Author).
