Book Synopsis El Puerto del Silencio by : Valentin Mendoza
Download or read book El Puerto del Silencio written by Valentin Mendoza and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Memory, War, and Dictatorship in Recent Spanish Fiction by Women by : Sarah Leggott

This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory, War, and Dictatorship in Recent Spanish Fiction by Women analyzes five novels by women writers that present women’s experiences during and after the Spanish Civil War and Franco dictatorship, highlighting the struggles of female protagonists of different ages to confront an unresolved individual and collective past. It discusses the different narrative models and strategies used in these works and the ways in which they engage with their political and historical context, particularly in the light of campaigns for the so-called recovery of historical memory in Spain (the “memory boom”) and in the broader context of memory and trauma studies. The novels that are examined in this book are Dulce Chacón’s La voz dormida (2002), Rosa Regàs’s Luna lunera (1999), Josefina Aldecoa’s La fuerza del destino (1997), Carme Riera’s La mitad del alma (2005), and Almudena Grandes’s El corazón helado (2007). These works all highlight the multiple nature of memories and histories and demonstrate the complex ways in which the past impacts on the present. This book also considers the extent to which the memories represented in these five novels are inflected by gender and informed by the gender politics of twentieth-century and contemporary Spain.

Book excerpt: Fiction. Latino/Latina Studies. Women's Studies. Translated from the Spanish by Jeffrey C. Barnett. Edited by Paula Sanmartin and Maria di Franscesco. Second place winner, 2016 International Latino Book Award for Best Novel, Historical Fiction—Bilingual or Spanish. A metaphor of a nation and its Diaspora, this bilingual edition of THE MEMORY OF SILENCE/MEMORIA DEL SILENCIO transcends the Cuban reality and becomes a story of universal breadth, a triumph of love and family over distance and politics. In 1959, at the age of 18, the twin sisters Lauri and Menchu share a common past, but their lives abruptly take on seemingly irreconcilable differences as Lauri leaves with her groom for Miami and Menchu remains in Havana. The text, then, becomes a series of interpolated chronicles, as each alternating chapter recounts one sister's life and then the other until finally in the present, now reunited, the sisters must confront the pain of the past and as well as the promise of the future. The novel's theme of reconciliation presents a refreshing message, and a timely one.

Book excerpt: A publishing phenomenon in Spain: a moving, lyrical, far-ranging meditation on the deep joys of confronting oneself through silence by a Spanish priest and Zen disciple. With silence increasingly becoming a stranger to us, one man set out to become its intimate: Pablo d'Ors, a Catholic priest whose life was changed by Zen meditation. With disarming honesty and directness, as well as a striking clarity of language, d'Ors shares his struggles as a beginning meditator: the tedium, restlessness, and distraction. But, persevering, the author discovers not only a deep peace and understanding of his true nature, but also that silence, rather than being a retreat from life, offers us an intense engagement with life just as it is. Imbued with a rare beauty, Biography of Silence shows us the deep joy of silence that is available to us all.

For over 35 years, people have used these practical teachings that offer advice on achieving stillness, faith, and fulfillment. Specific suggestions for your daily spiritual growth and development enhance the impact of the supportive words. Eileen’s brief messages, from what she called “the still, small voice within,” offer inspirational, uplifting, and powerful words of love and support. Her daily guidance was the bedrock of the early Findhorn Community, and the concept of “inner listening” is still very much part of individual and community practice there today. The encouraging and practical messages speak to those embarking upon the journey to find their divine inner self and spiritual truth. Anyone who meditates--whether inexperienced or seasoned--will find the wisdom shared both insightful and heartening. A new foreword by Jonathan Caddy, Eileen’s son who lives in the Findhorn Community, adds a fresh perspective to the profound influence this guidance can have. No matter how you use the wisdom shared in this small book, take these teachings into yourself and carry them within you, until they have done their silent, gentle, and loving work of opening the doors within.
Book Synopsis Nada En Absoluto by : Darielys Tejera
Download or read book Nada En Absoluto written by Darielys Tejera and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems by : Helmut Lieth
Download or read book Restoration of Tropical Forest Ecosystems written by Helmut Lieth and published by Springer. This book was released on 1914 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The destruction of the tropical forests continues rapidly. We all know that this has global, ecological and economic consequences. The problem is of such magnitude that it can only be compared to warfare. The destruction of tropical forests is both detrimental to the global ecology as well as posing a serious threat to the people living in these areas. Furthermore, the overutilization of such a valuable resource poses a serious threat to the next generations. Besides the problem generated for the people in these regions, and for the earth in general, there is a moral obligation to preserve the vast biological diversity in the tropical forests. We have a commitment to all species on earth as well as man and, therefore, need to preserve as many as possible, if not all. This book discusses the problem from different angles: from forestry, ecology and nature conservation. The two main problem areas are: first the wise utilization of that portion of the forest which will be used - especially the introduction of planned forestry in such areas and second the development of a good plan for nature conservation in the tropics.
