Building and expanding on his previous works, Jon Sobrino develops a Christology that shows how to meet the mystery of God, all God "Father" and call this Jesus "the Christ".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia brings together the vast array of historical research into the reality of the man, the teachings, the acts, and the events ascribed to him that have served as the foundational story of one of the world's central religions. This kind of historiography is not biography. The historical study of the Jesus stories and the transmission of these stories through time have been of seminal importance to historians of religion. Critical historical examination has provided a way for scholars of Christianity for centuries to analyze the roots of legend and religion in a way that allows scholars an escape from the confines of dogma, belief, and theological interpretation. In recent years, historical Jesus studies have opened up important discussions concerning anti-Semitism and early Christianity and the political and ideological filtering of the Jesus story of early Christianity through the Roman empire and beyond. Entries will cover the classical studies that initiated the new historiography, the theoretical discussions about authenticating the historical record, the examination of sources that have led to the western understanding of Jesus' teachings and disseminated myth of the events concerning Jesus' birth and death. Subject areas include: the history of the historical study of the New Testament: major contributors and their works theoretical issues and concepts methodologies and criteria historical genres and rhetorical styles in the story of Jesus historical and rhetorical context of martyrdom and messianism historical teachings of Jesus teachings within historical context of ethics titles of Jesus historical events in the life of Jesus historical figures in the life of Jesus historical use of Biblical figures referenced in the Gospels places and regions institutions the history of the New Testament within the culture, politics, and law of the Roman Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Human Catechism is a theopoetic journey. It is the integration of personal experience, theological reflection, and contextual analysis. This book proposes a radical way of discipleship in which we are invited to run the risk of positively imitating one another through the imitation of Christ. If violence happens through the imitation of one another, maybe good things do too. As the reader embarks on a contextually self-reflective journey, this book invites us to take the chance of believing in a God in whom there is no violence. A Human Catechism will be a journey from what seemed impossible, to what became second nature, all the way to becoming responsible for modeling a way of being otherwise to those around us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Stott was a renowned expositor and servant of the global church. His life’s ministry to develop and resource Christian leaders around the world has left an important legacy, especially for the church in Latin America. Many of these Christian leaders would receive direct support from Stott’s ministry, now known as Langham Partnership, to obtain their PhDs, joining numerous others around the world as a community of Langham scholars. On the 100th anniversary of John Stott’s birth, Langham scholars honor this legacy and Stott’s holistic understanding of the gospel, as they bear witness to the good news of the kingdom of God and its justice in Latin America. Structured around the historical development and impact of the Reformation throughout the continent, this collection of essays reflects on how the gospel has been understood, and addresses fundamental questions that stem from the rich biblical, historical, and theological traditions of the diverse faith communities in Latin America. Providing a proactive model for the global church that encourages dialogue, these contextualized expositions reflect their authors’ deep commitment to the Latin American church and the implications of the gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2021 Catholic Media Association Award first place award in morality, ethics, christology, mariology, and redemption What does it mean to live and build up the Kingdom of God? In this book, professor and priest Alberto de Mingo Kaminouchi introduces the contemporary reader to Christian ethics by examining the New Testament through the three key concepts of Aristotle’s ethics: happiness, virtue, and love. In turn, the three affirmations orient this reflection through the Gospel. First, when the triune God appears on the horizon, it becomes easier to understand that existence has a purpose: namely, participating with the entire human family in this project of happiness called the Kingdom of God. Second, happiness is not something outside of us; it consists in the practice of the virtues that bring about a personal transformation. Third, the project of the Kingdom leads us to live in love with others. De Mingo Kaminouchi shows the reader a real model of this in the community we call the church, the “field hospital” for all those in need of hope. This book is accessibly written for readers not already well-versed in Christian ethics.

Book excerpt: When was Christianity born? When was it that Christianity, born as a particular current within Judaism, constituted itself as a religion different and separate from the Jewish religion? The question has been asked, and the problem has therefore been considered, since the historical-critical investigation of Christian origins began. However the problem has become acute only in the last few decades, because of the occurrence of a whole series of circumstances and of reflections that have deeply changed the historiographic understanding regarding Judaism in the first century, and thus the origins of Christianity as well. Traditional opinion considered the founders of Christianity to be Jesus of Nazareth and Paul of Tarsus. Recent studies however affirm that a Christian religion as distinct from the Jewish religion can be spoken of only much later, and that for the entire first century, and for at least a part of the second century, Christianity was nothing more than a sect within Judaism. Dealing with the problem from an historical point of view, and thus considering not only Christianity of Jewish origin but also that of gentile origin, Giorgio Jossa demonstrates that the birth of a Christian identity as distinct from Jewish identity must actually be dated back to the first period of life of the community of Jesus.
