Book Synopsis Money and Power in Anglo-Saxon England by : Rory Naismith
Download or read book Money and Power in Anglo-Saxon England written by Rory Naismith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking study of coinage in early medieval England is the first to take account of the very significant additions to the corpus of southern English coins discovered in recent years and to situate this evidence within the wider historical context of Anglo-Saxon England and its continental neighbours. Its nine chapters integrate historical and numismatic research to explore who made early medieval coinage, who used it and why. The currency emerges as a significant resource accessible across society and, through analysis of its production, circulation and use, the author shows that control over coinage could be a major asset. This control was guided as much by ideology as by economics and embraced several levels of power, from kings down to individual craftsmen. Thematic in approach, this innovative book offers an engaging, wide-ranging account of Anglo-Saxon coinage as a unique and revealing gauge for the interaction of society, economy and government.

Book Synopsis The Latin Renovatio of Byzantium by : Filip Van Tricht
Download or read book The Latin Renovatio of Byzantium written by Filip Van Tricht and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1204 the army of the Fourth Crusade sacked the great city of Constantinople. In earlier historiography the view prevailed that these Western barons and knights temporarily destroyed the Byzantine state and replaced it with a series of feudal states of their own making. Through a comprehensive rereading of better and lesser-known sources this book offers an alternative perspective arguing that the Latin rulers did not abolish, but very consciously wanted to continue the Eastern Empire. In this, the new imperial dynasty coming from Flanders-Hainaut played a pivotal role. Despite religious and other differences many Byzantines sided with the new regime and administrative practices at the different governmental levels were to a larger or lesser degree maintained.

Book excerpt: Softcover book - The latest incarnation of Brother Can You Spare A Dime? - Modern Dime Size Silver Coins of the World with Footnotes to History has been published in a Third Edition. This work, a many year project to study these coins as miniature engravings of Art and History, was first published in 1997. Several years later a CD-rom was produced as the Second Edition. The author won a Numismatic Literary Guild Award for this Edition. The Third Edition, a 600 page book with over a thousand enlarged scans of the coins from the mid 1800's to 1970 show coins from around the world - Afghanistan to Yemen. These coins were the money of the people at the time; one would represent a days work, purchase a meal or a night's entertainment. Kings, Queens and Statesmen are portrayed on dozens, with little biographies of many. More than a numismatic book, this anthology is a fine way to develop a better understanding of money in use during the previous two centuries. A great addition to your numismatic library.

Book Synopsis The Republic of St. Peter by : Thomas F. X. Noble
Download or read book The Republic of St. Peter written by Thomas F. X. Noble and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-08-03 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of St. Peter seeks to reclaim for central Italy an important part of its own history. Noble's thesis is at once original and controversial: that the Republic, an independent political entity, was in existence by the 730s and was not a creation of the Franks in the 750s. Noble examines the political, economic, and religious problems that impelled the central Italians—and a succession of resolute popes—to seek emancipation from the Byzantine Empire. He delineates the social structures and historical traditions that produced a distinctive political society, describes the complete governmental apparatus of the Republic, and provides a comprehensive assessment of the Franco-papal alliance.
Book Synopsis Central Europe in the High Middle Ages by : Nora Berend
Download or read book Central Europe in the High Middle Ages written by Nora Berend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking comparative history of the early centuries of Bohemia, Hungary and Poland sets the development of each polity in the context of the central European region as a whole. Focusing on the origins of the realms and their development in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the book concludes with the thirteenth century when significant changes in social and economic structures occurred. The book presents a series of thematic chapters on every aspect of the early history of the region covering political, religious, economic, social and cultural developments, including an investigation of origin myths that questions traditional national narratives. It also explores the ways in which west European patterns were appropriated and adapted through the local initiatives of rulers, nobles and ecclesiastics in central Europe. An ideal introduction to the essential themes in medieval central European history, the book sheds important new light on regional similarities and differences.
Download or read book Rebranding Rule written by Kevin Sharpe and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the climactic part of his three-book series exploring the importance of public image in the Tudor and Stuart monarchies, Kevin Sharpe employs a remarkable interdisciplinary approach that draws on literary studies and art history as well as political, cultural, and social history to show how this preoccupation with public representation met the challenge of dealing with the aftermath of Cromwell's interregnum and Charles II's restoration, and how the irrevocably changed cultural landscape was navigated by the sometimes astute yet equally fallible Stuart monarchs and their successors.
