This book was released on 1996 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automorphic L-functions, introduced by Robert Langlands in the 1960s, are natural extensions of such classical L-functions as the Riemann zeta function, Hecke L-functions, etc. They form an important part of the Langlands Program, which seeks to establish connections among number theory, representation theory, and geometry. This book offers, via the Rankin-Selberg method, a thorough and comprehensive examination of the degree 16 standard L-function of the product of two rank two symplectic similitude groups, which includes the study of the global integral of Rankin-Selberg type and local integrals, analytic properties of certain Eisenstein series of symplectic groups, and the relevant residue representations.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are interested in the time-asymptotic behavior of solutions to viscous conservation laws. Through the pointwise estimates for the Green's function of the linearized system and the analysis of coupling of nonlinear diffusion waves, we obtain explicit expressions of the time-asymptotic behavior of the solutions. This yields optimal estimates in the integral norms. For most physical models, the viscosity matrix is not positive definite and the system is hyperbolic-parabolic, and not uniformly parabolic. This implies that the Green's function may contain Dirac [lowercase Greek]Delta-functions. When the corresponding inviscid system is non-strictly hyperbolic, the time-asymptotic state contains generalized Burgers solutions. These are illustrated by applying our general theory to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations and the equations of magnetohydrodynamics.

Book excerpt: This volume studies the behaviour of a random heat kernel associated with a stochastic partial differential equation, and gives short-time expansion of this heat kernel. The author finds that the dominant exponential term is classical and depends only on the Riemannian distance function. The second exponential term is a work term and also has classical meaning. There is also a third non-negligible exponential term which blows up. The author finds an expression for this third exponential term which involves a random translation of the index form and the equations of Jacobi fields. In the process, he develops a method to approximate the heat kernel to any arbitrary degree of precision.

Book excerpt: This volume studies multivalued evolution equations driven by time-dependent subdifferential operators and optimal control problems for such systems. The formulation is general enough to incorporate problems with time varying constraints. For evolution inclusions, existence relaxation and structural results for the solution set are proved. For optimal control problems, a general existence theory is developed, different forms of the relaxed problem are introduced and studied, well-posedness properties are investigated and the precise relation between the properties of relaxability and well-posedness is established. Various examples of systems which fit in the abstract framework are analysed.

Book excerpt: In this work, the authors provide a self-contained discussion of all real-valued quasi-periodic finite-gap solutions of the Toda and Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchies of completely integrable evolution equations. The approach utilizes algebro-geometric methods, factorization techniques for finite difference expressions, as well as Miura-type transformations. Detailed spectral theoretic properties of Lax pairs and theta function representations of the solutions are derived. Features: Simple and unified treatment of the topic. Self-contained development. Novel results for the Kac-van Moerbeke hierarchy and its algebro-geometric solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine finite, planar, 3-connected, edge-transitive graphs have been known and studied for many centuries. The infinite, locally finite, planar, 3-connected, edge-transitive graphs can be classified according to the number of their end. The 1-ended graphs in this class were identified by Grünbaum and Shephard; Watkins characterized the 2-ended members. Any remaining graphs in this class must have uncountably may ends. In this work, infinite-ended members of this class are shown to exist. A more detailed classification scheme in terms of the types of Petrie walks in the graphs in this class and the local structure of their automorphism groups is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental property of compact spaces - that continuous functions defined on compact spaces are bounded - served as a motivation for E. Hewitt to introduce the notion of a pseudocompact space. The class of pseudocompact spaces proved to be of fundamental importance in set-theoretic topology and its applications. This clear and self-contained exposition offers a comprehensive treatment of the question, When does a group admit an introduction of a pseudocompact Hausdorff topology that makes group operations continuous? Equivalently, what is the algebraic structure of a pseudocompact Hausdorff group? The authors have adopted a unifying approach that covers all known results and leads to new ones, Results in the book are free of any additional set-theoretic assumptions.

Book excerpt: This memoir provides a detailed study of the effect of non power-like irregularities of (the geometry of) the fractal boundary on the spectrum of "fractal drums" (and especially of "fractal strings"). In this work, the authors extend previous results in this area by using the notionof generalized Minkowski content which is defined through some suitable "gauge functions" other than power functions. (This content is used to measure the irregularity (or "fractality") of the boundary of an open set in R]n by evaluating the volume of its small tubular neighborhoods). In the situation when the power function is not the natural "gauge function", this enables the authors to obtain more precise estimates, with a broader potential range of applications than in previous papers of the second author and his collaborators. This text will also be of interest to those working in mathematical physics.

The global dynamics is described by a Morse decomposition of the global attractor, defined with the help of a discrete Lyapunov function. A three-dimensional system of ODE's with two linear equations is constructed, such that the invariant set is at least as complicated as a suspension of a full shift on two symbols. No index. Book excerpt: In this book, an index theorem is proved for arbitrary families of elliptic boundary value problems for Dirac operators and a surgery formula for the index of a family of Dirac operators on a closed manifold. Also obtained is a very general result on the cobordism invariance of the index of a family. All results are established by first symplectically rephrasing the problems and then using a generalized symplectic reduction technique. This provides a unified approach to all possible parameter spaces and all possible symmetries of a Dirac operator (eigh symmetries in the real case and two in the complex case). This text will also be of interest to those working in geometry and topology.

This class includes suitable versions of the derived category of modules over a commutative ring, or of comodules over a commutative Hopf algebra, and is closed under Bousfield localization. We study various notions of smallness, questions about representability of (co)homology functors, and various kinds of localization. We prove theorems analogous to those of Hopkins and Smith about detection of nilpotence and classification of thick subcategories. We define the class of Noetherian stable homotopy categories, and investigate their special properties. Finally, we prove that a number of categories occurring in nature (including those mentioned above) satisfy our axioms.
