Book excerpt: The deformation response and recrystallization behavior of a coarse, columnar-grain superalloy ingot material, Waspaloy, with a 100 fiber texture were established. For this purpose, isothermal hot compression tests were performed on cylindrical and doublecone samples at supersolvus temperatures under both monotonic (constant strain rate) and multi-hit conditions. Plastic flow showed a noticeable dependence on test direction relative to the columnar-grain orientation; the observed anisotropy in peak flow stress and flow softening were explained on the basis of the evolution of crystallographic texture during recrystallization. Similarly, anisotropy in dynamic recrystallization kinetics with respect to test direction was interpreted in terms of the effect of initial texture on the plastic work imposed per increment of macroscopic strain. Nevertheless, the broad kinetics for the coarse-grain, ingot material deformed under both monotonic and multi-hit conditions were comparable to those previously measured for fine-grain, wrought Waspaloy. Such an effect was attributed to the beneficial influence of the nucleation of recrystallization at both grain boundaries and carbide particles in the ingot material. In addition, a spatial non-uniformity in recrystallization was found in the ingot material and was interpreted in the context of the grain-boundary character and non-uniform strain at the grain/intragrain scale. A suite of tools being developed to model recrystallization phenomena during the breakdown of superalloy ingots is described. These tools include a mechanistic cellular automata; a mesoscale, mechanism-based model; and the crystal-plasticity finite-element method.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial breakdown behavior of Waspaloy-ingot material with course, columnar grain structure was established via isothermal hot compression of double-cone samples. Temperature (1177 degrees C), strain rate (0.1 s-l), dwell time between increments of deformation (30 or 60 seconds), and forging direction relative to the columnar structure were typical of industrial practice. Recrystallization kinetics were more rapid during multi-hit testing than monotonic testing. The recrystallization and grain-growth behavior showed a complex dependence on imposed strain, test orientation, and dwell time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A microstructure evolution model is presented, integrated into the Finite Element Modeling (FEM) software package DEFORM(tm). Recrystallization and grain growth, during and after thermomechanical deformation, are predicted via a phenomenologically-informed Cellular Automata (CA) algorithm. Strain, strain rate, and temperature are computed via FEM and provided as inputs to the model. Examples of a CA technique to predict microstructure evolution during cogging of a nickel base superalloy are presented. Although this model is focused on and will be validated for cogging of nickel base superalloy U720, it is designed to accommodate a range of alloys, thermomechanical processes, and other microstructure evolution algorithms, such as Monte Carlo (MC) and Phase Field (PF) methods as well.

Book excerpt: An investigation is being conducted to study the synergistic effects of thermal treatment and explosive shock loading on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Udimet 700 and Inconel 718. The influence of such shock thermomechanical processing (TMP) is compred with that of thermal processing alone and of conventional TMP by cold rolling to a recuction equivalent to the transient shock strain. Shock TMP of Udimet 700 led to improvements in tensile strengths at testing temperatures up to 1400F, tensile ductility, toughness, stress-rupture life at 1200 and 1400F, and microstructural stability. Room- temperature strength and toughness of Inconel 718 were increased due to shock TMP. (Modified author abstract).

This knowledge is central to understanding of the behaviour of existing alloys and the development of new materials that affect nearly every manufacturing industry. Background on fundamental modeling methods provides the user with a solid foundation of the underlying physics that support the mechanistic method of many industrial simulation software packages. The phenomenological method is given equal coverage

This book was released on 1976 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to study the effects of shock wave deformation and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of nickel base superalloy AF2-1DA. Shock wave deformation having a transient volume strain of 23.6% was generated by an explosively induced 500 Kbar shock wave. The shock wave deformation was introduced to AF2-1DA plates in the solution treated condition and after various solution treatments and gamma prime heat treatments. Carbide and/or final aging heat treatments were conducted after shock wave deformation processing. For comparison and evaluation of results AF2-1DA plates from the same lot of material were thermally processed using the standard solution treatment and aging sequences. Tensile, stress-rupture, and low cycle fatigue testing was conducted on shock wave processed and thermally processed samples. In general the result was to increase the yield strength by up to 15% and the tensile strength by 3-5% at the 1400 F test temperature for the shock wave processed alloy relative to the thermally processed alloy. This strength increase was accomplished with a 7% increase in elongation and 20% increase in the reduction of area. Such increases indicate a substantial increase in toughness of the shock wave processed alloy. The increase in toughness of the shock wave processed material was manifested by measured improvements in the stress-rupture life and the low cycle fatigue life.
