Book excerpt: The current high demand for fish and increased awareness of the role of the environment in supporting human well being has led to a situation where attitudes to inland water resources are changing rapidly. Trends in resource use and environmental impact are very evident in inland waters which are particularly vulnerable as they act as collectors of all the activities occurring in their basins and rank as some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The principle changes influencing the evolution of the aquatic resource for fisheries are described in this book, which has been compiled for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Book excerpt: This book takes the lead in analyzing the essential fish habitat policy in detail and offers insight into how scientists and managers around the country are implementing and supporting habitat research and policy. In 27 chapters, this symposium proceedings presents the findings and conclusions of scientists and policy makers who have been working on EFH policy, and Sea Grant-funded researchers who have been studying fish habitat. Pacific salmon, summer flounder, northern pike, spiny and American lobsters, fishermen's knowledge of habitat, restoration of marsh habitats, and remote sensing of habitat are among the wide variety of important topics covered in this publication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Columbia Forest Practices Code specifies planning and operational guidelines for each phase of timber harvesting operations around streams, lakes, and wetlands. This guide describes suitable practices to meet the objectives of the riparian management regulations within the Code, specifically the requirement to correctly identify streams on the basis of fish presence in order to ensure the protection of fish populations and habitats during all phases of forest harvesting. The guide defines the classes of streams distinguished for aquatic ecosystem and riparian zone management, identifies fish species that define a stream as fish-bearing under the Code, and describes factors influencing fish-stream identification such as stream reach, gradient, stream size, natural barriers, and fisheries sensitive zones. The guide concludes with methods for identifying fish streams, including measurement, sampling, data recording, and mapping procedures.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased water resources demand in rivers regulated by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dams has intensified the conflict between preservation of lotic ecosystems and economic benefits of stream regulatin or channel modification. The Riverine Community Habitat and Restoration Concept (RCHARC) facilitates evaluation of effects of different channel configurations or release patterns on fish habitat and can be used to balance water resources development and natural resource preservation. The RCHARC is applied to the Gavins Point Dam tailwater of the Missouri River as a case history to assess the effects of different reservoir release alternatives on habitat for native riverine warmwater fishes. Application of the RCHARC requires four steps. First a comparison standard must be selected which the project alternatives can be contrasted. Second, hydrologic and hydraulic features of the comparison standard having fish habitat significance are described and summarized as an annual series of monthly depth or velocity frequency distributions. Third, a similar approach is used to describe hydrologic and hydraulic features of the project alternatives. Fourth, the habitat value of each of the project alternatives is determined by similarity of their depth or velocity distributions to the distributions of the standard. The more similar an alternative is to the standard system, the higher it will be ranked.
