Book Synopsis Climate Action in a Globalizing World by : Carl Cassegard
Download or read book Climate Action in a Globalizing World written by Carl Cassegard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence and urgency of global climate change is a matter of scientific consensus. Yet the global politics of climate change have been anything but consensual. In this context, a wave of global climate activism has emerged in the last decade in response to the perceived failure of the political negotiations. This book provides a unique comparative study of environmental movements in USA, Japan, Denmark and Sweden, analyzing their interaction with the international climate institutions of the United Nations, with national governments, and with currents in the global climate movement. It documents how and why the movement evolved between the Copenhagen Summit of 2009 and the Paris Summit of 2015, altering its strategies and tactics while attracting new actors to the issue area. Further, it demonstrates how the development of global environmental networks has increased contact between environmental movements in the Global North and those from the Global South, resulting in the establishment of ‘climate justice’ as a political cause and unifying frame for global climate activism.

Book Synopsis Unbreakable by : Stephane Hallegatte

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Economic losses from natural disasters totaled $92 billion in 2015.' Such statements, all too commonplace, assess the severity of disasters by no other measure than the damage inflicted on buildings, infrastructure, and agricultural production. But $1 in losses does not mean the same thing to a rich person that it does to a poor person; the gravity of a $92 billion loss depends on who experiences it. By focusing on aggregate losses—the traditional approach to disaster risk—we restrict our consideration to how disasters affect those wealthy enough to have assets to lose in the first place, and largely ignore the plight of poor people. This report moves beyond asset and production losses and shifts its attention to how natural disasters affect people’s well-being. Disasters are far greater threats to well-being than traditional estimates suggest. This approach provides a more nuanced view of natural disasters than usual reporting, and a perspective that takes fuller account of poor people’s vulnerabilities. Poor people suffer only a fraction of economic losses caused by disasters, but they bear the brunt of their consequences. Understanding the disproportionate vulnerability of poor people also makes the case for setting new intervention priorities to lessen the impact of natural disasters on the world’s poor, such as expanding financial inclusion, disaster risk and health insurance, social protection and adaptive safety nets, contingent finance and reserve funds, and universal access to early warning systems. Efforts to reduce disaster risk and poverty go hand in hand. Because disasters impoverish so many, disaster risk management is inseparable from poverty reduction policy, and vice versa. As climate change magnifies natural hazards, and because protection infrastructure alone cannot eliminate risk, a more resilient population has never been more critical to breaking the cycle of disaster-induced poverty.

Book Synopsis Deepening Reform for China’s Long-term Growth and Development by : Ligang Song
Download or read book Deepening Reform for China’s Long-term Growth and Development written by Ligang Song and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chinese economy has entered a new phase of development in which sources of growth are not so much dependent upon pure increases in labour, investment and credit expansion, but from productivity improvement, structural changes, technological progress and the benefits from improvement of the social security and welfare improvement. When market functions are fully established to become a main channel for allocating resources, the entrepreneurship will flourish engaging in more innovative activities, workers will move more freely and have more incentives to improve their skills, firms will become more productive through market entry and exit, the economic structure will become more balanced because of the improved resource allocation, and in the end, growth will become more spontaneous and sustainable. In this sense, reforms could deliver ‘dividend’ by raising China’s potential economic growth rates. For China to confront all the challenges it faces at present, the reforms undertaken now have to be deep, comprehensive and far-reaching in order to succeed in paving the way for China to complete the task of transformation in the long-term. There is no better alternative than deepening the market-oriented reform in advancing the course of China’s modernisation for future development and prosperity and lifting China to the status of a developed economy in the next two decades. The recent China update books have covered the topic of reform from different angles and this new book is another attempt to address this important issue.

Book Synopsis United Republic of Tanzania by : International Monetary Fund. African Dept.
Download or read book United Republic of Tanzania written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unfavorable global economic environment and domestic factors continue to weigh on Tanzania’s economic recovery. Growth rebounded during the first half of 2023 but is expected to slowdown in the second half amid headwinds from a weak global outlook and forex liquidity shortages. Inflation has moderated and is now well within the Bank of Tanzania’s target. The fiscal deficit was wider than expected in FY2022/23, largely reflecting shortfalls in revenue collections. A wide current account deficit for FY2022/23 and tighter external financial conditions resulted in pressures in the foreign exchange market.
