Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean islands have a vibrant oral folklore. In Jamaica, the clever spider Anansi, who outsmarts stronger animals, is a symbol of triumph by the weak over the powerful. The fables of the foolish Juan Bobo, who tries to bring milk home in a burlap bag, illustrate facets of traditional Puerto Rican life. Conflict over status, identity and power is a recurring theme--in a story from Trinidad, a young bull, raised by his mother in secret, challenges his tyrannical father who has killed all the other males in the herd. One in a series of folklore reference guides by the author, this volume shares summaries of 438 tales--some in danger of disappearing--retold in English and Creole from West African, European, and slave indigenous cultures in 24 countries and territories. Tales are grouped in themed sections with a detailed subject index and extensive links to online sources.

Book excerpt: "There's a cancer, and it's killing our democracy. A poor man has to sell his soul to get elected. I cry for this country." On February 29, 2000, ninety-year-old Doris “Granny D” Haddock completed her 3,200-mile, fourteen-month walk from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. She walked through 105-degree deserts and blinding blizzards, despite arthritis and emphysema. Along her way, her remarkable speeches — rich with wisdom, love, and political insight — transformed individuals and communities and jump-started a full-blown movement. She became a national heroine. On her journey, Haddock kept a diary — tracking the progress of her walk and recalling events in her life and the insights that have given her. Granny D celebrates an exuberant life of love, activism, and adventure — from writing one-woman feminist plays in the 1930s to stopping nuclear testing near an Eskimo fishing village in 1960 to Haddock’s current crusade. Threaded throughout is the spirit of her beloved hometown of Dublin/Peterborough, New Hampshire — Thornton Wilder’s inspirations for Grovers Croner in Out Town — a quintessentially American center of New England pluck, Yankee ingenuity and can-do attitude. Told in Doris Haddock’s distinct and unforgettable voice, Granny D will move, amuse, and inspire readers of all ages with its clarion message that one person can indeed make a difference.

Book excerpt: The Spider's Web is an allegory set a half-century ago in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Alabama. The story's action is timeless. As earth-shattering as a simple tale by Joseph Conrad or as strangely symbolic as a gothic mystery by Carson McCullers, it is as real and as timely as today's headlines. In these stories of growing up in Alabama in the 1950s, Wayne Greenhaw reaches into his bag of tricks to deliver sleight-of-hand drama that cringes through a hot night as frightening as a solitary woman's scream. It crawls down the spine of the reader witnessing the making of a monster in small-town suburbia. And it is as beautifully nostalgic as a whippoorwill's call at twilight in the delta of south Alabama. Woven through all of the stories in The Spider's Web is Thomas Morgan Reed, our central character, as he struggles toward manhood, wisdom, and redemption. In a shorter version, Wayne Greenhaw's title novella, "The Spider's Web," won the national Hackney Literary Award for short stories. Many of the related short stories were originally published in literary quarterlies. The author of dozens of pieces of short fiction, four novels and numerous works of nonfiction, Greenhaw began writing as a teenager shortly after he spent months in a children's clinic undergoing spinal surgery, much like Thomas Morgan Reed in The Spider's Web. At the University of Alabama, Greenhaw studied creative writing under legendary professor Hudson Strode. He also attended the writing center at Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Greenhaw's first novel, The Golfer, was published in 1968 by J.B. Lippincott Company when the author was twenty-eight years old. Greenhaw is also author of several stageplays and a screenplay of his novel, The Long Journey. He lives in Montgomery, Alabama, with his wife, Sally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years many folklorists have denied the possibility of a truly American folk or fairy tale. They have argued that the tales found in the United States are watered-down derivatives of European fare. With this gathering, William Bernard McCarthy compiles evidence strongly to the contrary. Cinderella in America: A Book of Folk and Fairy Tales represents these tales as they have been told in the United States from Revolutionary days until the present. To capture this richness, tales are grouped in chapters that represent regional and ethnic groups, including Iberian, French, German, British, Irish, other European, African American, and Native American. These tales are drawn from published collections, journals, and archives, and from fieldwork by McCarthy and his colleagues. Created along the nationalist model of the Brothers Grimm yet as diverse in its voices and themes as the nation it represents, Cinderella in America shows these tales truly merit the designation American. William Bernard McCarthy is professor emeritus of English at Pennsylvania State University. His previous books are The Ballad Matrix: Personality, Milieu, and the Oral Tradition and Jack in Two Worlds: Contemporary North American Tales and Their Tellers .
