Book excerpt: The care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has made many medical and nursing advances over the years. As technology, trends in neonatal care and medical equipment improve the survival rate for these premature and compromised infants have increased tremendously. In the NICU premature infants 37 weeks and under need specialized care to survive. Noise control is a perplexing task for the health care team. The noise in the NICU consists mostly of the daily care activities of the medical team. The neonate's admittance into the NICU is a traumatic time for the neonate as well as the family. Research has found that excessive noise in the NICU has an impact on the premature infant's physiological behavior (Berg, Chavez, and Serpanos, 2010). Research has also found that the effects of proper positioning of the infant during environmental stressors can have essential benefits to the preterm infant (Peng, 2010). The physical environment of the NICU and the practices involved with administering intensive care may influence adversely the neurodevelopmental outcomes of the neonates (McAnulty, G., Duffy, FH., Butler, S., Parad,S.,Ringer,S.,Zurakowski, D., Als, 2009). Many of these infants born prematurely can have medical, developmental, or behavioral problems. With the advancement in developmental care these risks can be minimized (McAnulty, and others 2009). With proper handling and changes in the NICU environment these infants will have less risks of hearing loss, stable vital signs, consistent weight gain, and normal development (Berg, et al 2010).
