Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal Seismic Deconvolution: An Estimation-Based Approach presents an approach to the problem of seismic deconvolution. It is meant for two different audiences: practitioners of recursive estimation theory and geophysical signal processors. The book opens with a chapter on elements of minimum-variance estimation that are essential for all later developments. Included is a derivation of the Kaiman filter and discussions of prediction and smoothing. Separate chapters follow on minimum-variance deconvolution; maximum-likelihood and maximum a posteriori estimation methods; the philosophy of maximum-likelihood deconvolution (MLD); and two detection procedures for determining the location parameters in the input sequence product model. Subsequent chapters deal with the problem of estimating the parameters of the source wavelet when everything else is assumed known a priori; estimation of statistical parameters when the source wavelet is known a priori; and a different block component method for simultaneously estimating all wavelet and statistical parameters, detecting input signal occurrence times, and deconvolving a seismic signal. The final chapter shows how to incorporate the simplest of all models—the normal incidence model—into the maximum-likelihood deconvolution procedure.

Book excerpt: This modern introduction to seismic data processing in both exploration and global geophysics demonstrates practical applications through real data and tutorial examples. The underlying physics and mathematics of the various seismic analysis methods are presented, giving students an appreciation of their limitations and potential for creating models of the sub-surface. Designed for a one-semester course, this textbook discusses key techniques within the context of the world's ever increasing need for petroleum and mineral resources - equipping upper undergraduate and graduate students with the tools they need for a career in industry. Examples presented throughout the text allow students to compare different methods and can be demonstrated using the instructor's software of choice. Exercises at the end of sections enable students to check their understanding and put the theory into practice and are complemented by solutions for instructors and additional case study examples online to complete the learning package.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of seismic exploration is to delineate the subsurface structure of the earth. A large variety of computer-processing methods are available to transform the observed seismic data into a form that is more useful to the seismic interpreter. An important subdivision of these methods comes under the heading "Seismic Inversion and Deconvolution." Most seismic data are recorded either by geophone that measures particle velocity, or else by hydrophone that measures pressure. A dual sensor incorporates both a geophone and a hydrophone so simultaneous measurements of both particle velocity and pressure are obtained. Unprecedented improvements in inversion and deconvolution are made possible through the use of "Dual-Sensor Technology." The purpose of Seismic Inversion and Deconvolution, Part B: Dual-Sensor Technology is to provide the fundaments of dual-sensor technology. Previous work together with new results are brought together into a self contained whole. By using dual sensors in the acquisition of seismic data, new avenues are opened up that revolutionize all aspects of seismic inversion and deconvolution. Dual-sensor technology can lead to images of the subsurface of the earth that were previously thought unattainable. The implications for the oil industry are far reaching. Great new reserves of petroleum are waiting to be discovered through the use of dual sensor technology. Today, the main application of this work is with ocean bottom cable (OBC) methods. However, it is anticipated that dual sensor technology will soon be applied not only to all aspects of seismic oil exploration, but also to other disciplines involved with remote sensing.
