Book excerpt: Since the 1950's, researchers have studied fatigue crack propagation utilizing fracture mechanics. Such work has provided advances in calculating stress intensity factors, determining elastic-plastic crack tip parameters, and investigating the effects of crack closure. Predictions of fatigue life have been made using crack growth rate models. Over the years, this work has served to influence structural maintenance and damage tolerance philosophies; however, understanding, predicting, and simulating fatigue crack growth is still based on experimental curve fitting and phenomenological rate "laws." The work discussed in this thesis is a step toward understanding fatigue crack incubation, nucleation and microstructurally small crack growth from a first principles approach. To this end, capabilities have been created and assembled to generate, mesh, analyze, and post-process 3D statistical representations of metallic polycrystals with cohesive grain boundaries. A component-based framework facilitates flexibility, growth, and multiscale modeling. Components are accessed and connected through Web service interfaces. The Polycrystal Generator accesses the components for generating, meshing, and assigning properties and boundary conditions to a 3D polycrystal sample. It also provides an interface to a molecular dynamics component to facilitate loosely coupled multi-scale analyses. Analyses are conducted utilizing a parallel solution software package, PETSc, and in-house finite element library, FemLib. The large samples and resulting data is managed using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, an off-the-shelf relation database. Finally, sample geometries, mesh models, and results are visualized using PView, a real-time visualization tool created using OpenDX, Python, and SQL. The assembled framework is used to conduct a parametric study of 3D statistical polycrystals under monotonic loading. The samples are analyzed with variation introduced in geometry, grain constitutive model and parameter values, cohesive grain boundary parameter values, and boundary conditions. This parametric study gives insight into how each variation influences when and where cracks nucleate. Finally, the results from the parametric study are utilized to conduct simulations under cyclic loading. These analyses give insight into the ability to accurately capture grain boundary decohesion leading to fatigue crack nucleation. (Abstract).

Book Synopsis Characterization of Nanocomposites by : Frank Abdi
Download or read book Characterization of Nanocomposites written by Frank Abdi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, advanced multiscale hybrid materials are being produced in the industry, studied by universities, and used in several applications. Unlike for macromaterials, it is difficult to obtain the physical, mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of nanomaterials because of the scale. Designers, however, must have knowledge of these properties to perform any finite element analysis or durability and damage tolerance analysis. This is the book that brings this knowledge within easy reach. What makes the book unique is the fact that its approach that combines multiscale multiphysics and statistical analysis with multiscale progressive failure analysis. The combination gives a very powerful tool for minimizing tests, improving accuracy, and understanding the effect of the statistical nature of materials, in addition to the mechanics of advanced multiscale materials, all the way to failure. The book focuses on obtaining valid mechanical properties of nanocomposite materials by accurate prediction and observed physical tests, as well as by evaluation of test anomalies of advanced multiscale nanocomposites containing nanoparticles of different shapes, such as chopped fiber, spherical, and platelet, in polymeric, ceramic, and metallic materials. The prediction capability covers delamination, fracture toughness, impact resistance, conductivity, and fire resistance of nanocomposites. The methodology employs a high-fidelity procedure backed with comparison of predictions with test data for various types of static, fatigue, dynamic, and crack growth problems. Using the proposed approach, a good correlation between the simulation and experimental data is established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular dynamics simulation is a significant technique to gain insight into the mechanical behavior of nanostructured (NS) materials and associated underlying deformation mechanisms at the atomic scale. The purpose of this book is to detect and correlate critically current achievements and properly assess the state of the art in the mechanical behavior study of NS material in the perspective of the atomic scale simulation of the deformation process. More precisely, the book aims to provide representative examples of mechanical behavior studies carried out using molecular dynamics simulations, which provide contributory research findings toward progress in the field of NS material technology.

Book Synopsis Computational Mesomechanics of Composites by : Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr
Download or read book Computational Mesomechanics of Composites written by Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of composite materials can be improved by tailoring their microstructures. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.
Book Synopsis Homogenization of Coupled Phenomena in Heterogenous Media by : Jean-Louis Auriault
Download or read book Homogenization of Coupled Phenomena in Heterogenous Media written by Jean-Louis Auriault and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-01-05 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both naturally-occurring and man-made materials are often heterogeneous materials formed of various constituents with different properties and behaviours. Studies are usually carried out on volumes of materials that contain a large number of heterogeneities. Describing these media by using appropriate mathematical models to describe each constituent turns out to be an intractable problem. Instead they are generally investigated by using an equivalent macroscopic description - relative to the microscopic heterogeneity scale - which describes the overall behaviour of the media. Fundamental questions then arise: Is such an equivalent macroscopic description possible? What is the domain of validity of this macroscopic description? The homogenization technique provides complete and rigorous answers to these questions. This book aims to summarize the homogenization technique and its contribution to engineering sciences. Researchers, graduate students and engineers will find here a unified and concise presentation. The book is divided into four parts whose main topics are Introduction to the homogenization technique for periodic or random media, with emphasis on the physics involved in the mathematical process and the applications to real materials. Heat and mass transfers in porous media Newtonian fluid flow in rigid porous media under different regimes Quasi-statics and dynamics of saturated deformable porous media Each part is illustrated by numerical or analytical applications as well as comparison with the self-consistent approach.
