Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoding the Periodic Table In the year 1809 Russian Chemist Dimitri Ivanovich Mendeleev published the first Chemical Periodic Table of the Elements. Since then scientists developed a theory that every element consists of a tightly packed mass of protons and neutrons which is surrounded by concentric spheres which are occupied by orbiting electrons. This concept is known as the Standard Model, but it is flawed, because it cannot accommodate gravity. For many decades researchers, including this author in the late 1960's, tried to formulate theories that in a comprehensive way would unite all physical designs and phenomena under a common denominator, but to no avail. The String Theory is one of them but it has found no success. In 1989 the author of the book made a fresh start again with the notion that particles such as the proton, neutron and electron would not be round, but that they would have straight-lined, square or cubic configurations, because the Periodic Table's had quadratic numbers in their quantities of elements, such as: Period 1 ? with 2 elements: 2 = 2x12, Periods 2 & 3 ? 8 = 2 x 22, Periods 4 & 5 ? 18 = 2 x 32 and Period 6 & 7 ? 32 2 x 42. This might indicate square structural relationships, lets give it a try! It worked, it took 20 years to do it, it was a fascinating journey, falling down and getting up again and again, working without a computer, with all figures hand-drawn, and discovering that the forces that make the nuclear mass of the neutron do that by multiplying two force-filled cubic volumes, as in [3F]6 = [3F x 3F x 3] X [3F x 3F x 3F] = 1838.2656.

Book excerpt: Treats joint source and channel decoding in an integrated way Gives a clear description of the problems in the field together with the mathematical tools for their solution Contains many detailed examples useful for practical applications of the theory to video broadcasting over mobile and wireless networks Traditionally, cross-layer and joint source-channel coding were seen as incompatible with classically structured networks but recent advances in theory changed this situation. Joint source-channel decoding is now seen as a viable alternative to separate decoding of source and channel codes, if the protocol layers are taken into account. A joint source/protocol/channel approach is thus addressed in this book: all levels of the protocol stack are considered, showing how the information in each layer influences the others. This book provides the tools to show how cross-layer and joint source-channel coding and decoding are now compatible with present-day mobile and wireless networks, with a particular application to the key area of video transmission to mobiles. Typical applications are broadcasting, or point-to-point delivery of multimedia contents, which are very timely in the context of the current development of mobile services such as audio (MPEG4 AAC) or video (H263, H264) transmission using recent wireless transmission standards (DVH-H, DVB-SH, WiMAX, LTE). This cross-disciplinary book is ideal for graduate students, researchers, and more generally professionals working either in signal processing for communications or in networking applications, interested in reliable multimedia transmission. This book is also of interest to people involved in cross-layer optimization of mobile networks. Its content may provide them with other points of view on their optimization problem, enlarging the set of tools which they could use. Pierre Duhamel is director of research at CNRS/ LSS and has previously held research positions at Thomson-CSF, CNET, and ENST, where he was head of the Signal and Image Processing Department. He has served as chairman of the DSP committee and associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing and Signal Processing Letters, as well as acting as a co-chair at MMSP and ICASSP conferences. He was awarded the Grand Prix France Telecom by the French Science Academy in 2000. He is co-author of more than 80 papers in international journals, 250 conference proceedings, and 28 patents. Michel Kieffer is an assistant professor in signal processing for communications at the Université Paris-Sud and a researcher at the Laboratoire des Signaux et Systèmes, Gif-sur-Yvette, France. His research interests are in joint source-channel coding and decoding techniques for the reliable transmission of multimedia contents. He serves as associate editor of Signal Processing (Elsevier). He is co-author of more than 90 contributions to journals, conference proceedings, and book chapters. It was developed principally to support the combination of the video and audio coding methods defined in Part 2 and 3 of this Standard. The system layer supports six basic functions: a) the synchronization of multiple compressed streams on decoding; b) the interleaving of multiple compressed streams into a single stream; c) the initialization of buffering for decoding start up; d) continuous buffer management; e) time identification; A GB/T 17975.1 multiplexed bit stream is either a Transport Stream or a Program Stream. Both streams are constructed from PES packets and packets containing other necessary information. Both stream types support multiplexing of video and audio compressed streams from one program with a common time base. The Transport Stream additionally supports the multiplexing of video and audio compressed streams from multiple programs with independent time bases. For almost error-free environments the Program Stream is generally more appropriate, supporting software processing of program information. The Transport Stream is more suitable for use in environments where errors are likely. A GB/T 17975.1 multiplexed bit stream, whether a Transport Stream or a Program Stream, is constructed in two layers: the outermost layer is the system layer, and the innermost is the compression layer. The system layer provides the functions necessary for using one or more compressed data streams in a system. The video and audio parts of GB/T 17975 define the compression coding layer for audio and video data. Coding of other types of data is not contained in this Specification, but is supported by the system layer provided that the other types of data adhere to the constraints on multiplexing stream semantics defined in Section 2.7.

Book excerpt: The original title of this collection was The Many Realities of Ynot Nagrom—this because some of the people who may have read my novels and/or a few of the short stories contained in this volume have asked me if I consider myself a science fiction writer. As you will see, many of these thirty stories and essays are far from that genre; therefore, I do not consider myself to be such a writer. Rather, I see myself at times consumed with the possibilities of alternative realities. For instance, what if —there was a way the South would have been able to win the battle of Gettysburg and, with it, the Civil War, —the Titanic had missed the iceberg, —we were able to build a Super Hadron Collider the circumference of the moon, which then opened a parallel universe to ours, and —George Custer had not chosen to leave his two Gatling guns behind on his way to the Little Bighorn? As the cover proclaims, I have also included my literary essays, short stories, and personal tales for all of you. And as the Koran begins, “Not a word of this book should you doubt.” Tony Morgan

Book excerpt: Error-correction coding is being used on an almost routine basis in most new communication systems. Not only is coding equipment being used to increase the energy efficiency of communication links, but coding ideas are also providing innovative solutions to many related communication problems. Among these are the elimination of intersymbol interference caused by filtering and multipath and the improved demodulation of certain frequency modulated signals by taking advantage of the "natural" coding provided by a continuous phase. Although several books and nu merous articles have been written on coding theory, there are still noticeable deficiencies. First, the practical aspects of translating a specific decoding algorithm into actual hardware have been largely ignored. The information that is available is sketchy and is widely dispersed. Second, the information required to evaluate a particular technique under situations that are en countered in practice is available for the most part only in private company reports. This book is aimed at correcting both of these problems. It is written for the design engineer who must build the coding and decoding equipment and for the communication system engineer who must incorporate this equipment into a system. It is also suitable as a senior-level or first-year graduate text for an introductory one-semester course in coding theory. The book U"Ses a minimum of mathematics and entirely avoids the classical theorem/proof approach that is often seen in coding texts.

Research in this area has been going on for some time, with results getting into development and finally reaching the stage of products. Trends in research as well as a reality check will be the purpose of this Ninth InternationalW orkshopo n Quality of Service. IWQoS isa ver y successful seriesof workshops and has established itself as one of the premier forums for the presentation and discussion of new research and ideas on QoS. The importance of this workshop series is also reflected in the large number of excellents ubmissions. Nearly 150 papers from all continents were submitted to the workshop, about a fifth of these being short papers. The program committee were very pleased witht he quality of the submissions andh ad the difficult task of selecting the relatively small number of papers which could be accepted for IWQoS2001. Due to the tough competition, many very good papers had to be rejected.

The idea for the workshop, born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) in 1990, was to bring together some of the best Soviet coding theorists. Scientists from France, Finland, Germany, Israel, Italy, Spain, and the United States also attended. The papers in the volume fall rather naturally into four categories: - Applications of exponential sums - Covering radius - Constructions -Decoding.
