Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the World Conference of Human Rights in 1993 and the adoption of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action (VDPA), an international high-level conference took place in Vienna in June 2013. The conference gathered some 200 experts from all parts of the world, who, on the one hand, reaffirmed the key achievements of the VDPA, such as the universality and indivisibility, as well as the legitimacy of the international protection of human rights; on the other hand, the experts addressed, on the basis of these accomplishments, current and future challenges to the international human rights system. In three working groups, as well as in various high-level public panels, discussions focused on the following thematic areas: strengthening the rule of law, realizing the human rights of women universally, and the preparation of a human rights-based approach for the post-2015 development agenda. The conference resulted in action-oriented recommendations to States and other actors, which were presented to the UN Human Rights Council, as well as the General Assembly, in Autumn 2013. El mito esconde importantes dosis de xenofobia y de criminalización de personas que simplemente han atravesado irregularmente una frontera o se hallan con una documentación caducada.El respeto de los Derechos Humanos de las personas en situación irregular no siempre se produce en nuestros democráticos Estados de Derecho{ en ellos surge con demasiada frecuencia el cinismo del doble o triple lenguaje. El respeto efectivo de los Derechos Humanos (universales, indivisibles, interdependientes, inalienables e irrenunciables) interesa a todos y a todas. Cuando algún grupo de personas sufre su violación, otras personas (en esta hipótesis, muchos ciudadanos de la Unión) no se dan cuenta de que se cuestiona, sufre y peligra la misma esencia de la democracia.

Book excerpt: Based on an ethnographic study on the Andean Tri-border (between Chile, Peru, and Bolivia), this volume addresses the experience of Aymara cross-border women from Bolivia employed in the rural valleys on the outskirts of Arica (Chile’s northernmost city). As protagonists of transborder mobility circuits, these women are intersectionally impacted by different forms of social vulnerability. With a feminist anthropological perspective, the book investigates how the boundaries of gender are constructed in the (multi)situated experience of these transborder women. By building a bridge between classical anthropological studies on kinship and contemporary debates on transnational and transborder mobility, the book invites us to rethink structuralist theoretical assertions on the elementary character of family alliances.
