Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how two topics of longstanding philosophical interest—free will and value relativism—are connected in unsuspected ways. The ancient doctrine that all values are relative provides clues needed to resolve some important philosophical problems about free will. One of these problems concerns theories that deny the compatibility of free will and determinism; it is often said that such "incompatibilist" theories involve obscure conceptions of agency and are essentially mysterious. The book answers this charge by developing—in greater detail than has ever been attempted before—an incompatibilist theory of freedom consistent with current scientific evidence, avoiding all appeals to obscure or mysterious forms of agency. This theory exploits neglected clues in the history of philosophy about free will and action, objectivity and relativism in ethics, and about the foundations of liberalism in political theory.

Book excerpt: The problem of selection of alternatives or the problem of decision making in the modern world has become the most important class of problems constantly faced by business people, researchers, doctors and engineers. The fields that are almost entirely focused on conflicts, where applied mathematics is successfully used, are law, military science, many branches of economics, sociology, political science, and psychology. There are good grounds to believe that medicine and some branches of biology and ethics can also be included in this list. Modern applied mathematics can produce solutions to many tens of classes of conflicts differing by the composition and structure of the participants, specific features of the set of their objectives or interests, and various characteristics of the set of their actions, strategies, behaviors, controls, and decisions as applied to various principles of selection or notions of decision optimization. The current issues of social and economic systems involve the necessity to coordinate and jointly optimize various lines of development and activities of modern society. For this reason, the decision problems arising in investigation of such systems are versatile, which shows up not only in the multiplicity of participants, their interests and complexity of reciprocal effects, but also in the laborious development of social utility criteria for a variety of indices and versatile objectives. The efficient decision methods for such complex systems can be developed only the basis of specially developed mathematical tools.

Warner’s bestselling Applied Statistics: From Bivariate Through Multivariate Techniques has been split into two volumes for ease of use over a two-course sequence. Applied Statistics II: Multivariable and Multivariate Techniques, Third Edition is a core multivariate statistics text based on chapters from the second half of the original book. The text begins with two new chapters: an introduction to the new statistics, and a chapter on handling outliers and missing values. All chapters on statistical control and multivariable or multivariate analyses from the previous edition are retained (with the moderation chapter heavily revised) and new chapters have been added on structural equation modeling, repeated measures, and on additional statistical techniques. Each chapter includes a complete example, and begins by considering the types of research questions that chapter’s technique can answer, progresses to data screening, and provides screen shots of SPSS menu selections and output, and concludes with sample results sections. By-hand computation is used, where possible, to show how elements of the output are related to each other, and to obtain confidence interval and effect size information when SPSS does not provide this. Datasets are available on the accompanying website. This book was released on 2008-11-05 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not uncommon to find books and other publications in the literature dealing individually with the subjects of 'decision sciences', 'technology' and ' globalisation' However, there are very few instances of books which integrate these three dimensions in an umbrella framework. This publication is one such attempt. This book comprises of 58 papers contributed by leading academia from universities and management institutes in India and abroad. Many of the contributions have come from USA, Canada, UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, UAE, Bahrain, Taiwan, Brazil and Mexico, adding to the rich diversity of the thought processes explored in the papers. Some of these papers are country-specific, while some others provide a transnational perspective. Also, while some papers provide enriched conceptual frameworks in specific disciplines, building upon existing frameworks, several other papers provide application-oriented coverage, focused at select organizations or industries, further adding unique value to this book. There are eight sections in the book, namely: Supply Chain Management Operations Management Information Systems & ICT IT & E-Business Strategies Business Modeling Global Business: Issues & Challenges Marketing and Globalisation New Paradigms in Education and Globalisation The issues touched upon by various papers within each section are diverse and yet highly relevant and contemporary. We believe this book would be useful not only to academia, research scholars and students of various disciplines of management, but also to those in the industry in India and abroad, who are seeking conceptual inputs and experience sharing in their respective positions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decade the techniques of social choice theory, game theory and positive political theory have been combined in interesting ways so as to pro vide a common framework for analyzing the behavior of a developed political economy. Social choice theory itself grew out of the innovative attempts by Ken neth Arrow (1951) and Duncan Black (1948, 1958) to extend the range of economic theory in order to deal with collective decision-making over public goods. Later work, by William Baumol (1952), and James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock (1962), focussed on providing an "economic" interpretation of democratic institutions. In the same period Anthony Downs (1957) sought to model representative democracy and elections while William Riker (1962) made use of work in cooperative game theory (by John von Neumann and Oscar Morgenstern, 1944) to study coalition behavior. In my view, these "rational choice" analyses of collective decision-making have their antecedents in the arguments of Adam Smith (1759, 1776), James Madison (1787) and the Marquis de Condorcet (1785) about the "design" of political institutions. In the introductory chapter to this volume I briefly describe how some of the current normative and positive aspects of social choice date back to these earlier writers.
