They can preserve records of past temperature, precipitation, drought, and extreme weather events. The focus of this dissertation is to use tree ring width, carbon isotopes, oxygen isotopes from multiple trees to characterize climate variability and the tree-ring tropical cyclone record. Living longleaf pine trees (Pinus palustris Mill.) were sampled from the Turkey Creek and Big Sandy Creek Units at Big Thicket National Preserve, Texas. Annual tree rings were measured and assigned yearly calendar dates. The latewood portion of each annual ring was shaved with a scalpel, and alpha-cellulose was extracted for carbon and oxygen isotopic analyses. Oxygen isotope records from both sites indicated that individual trees growing in the same stands could vary significantly from each other. The heterogeneity of tree-ring oxygen isotopes was driven by variability in the oxygen isotope composition of soil moisture used for tree growth. Average oxygen isotope chronologies from both sites yielded significant correlations with regional fall (August-October) precipitation (Turkey Creek r = -0.71, p

Book excerpt: To understand the effect of human-induced stresses on forests, there is a need for a method to separate effects of imposed stress from effects of natural climate stress. I developed an approach to predict forest response to climate stress using as indicators stable carbon isotopes in tree foliage and growth-rings. This approach required understanding and modeling the relation between climate and isotope abundance in tree tissue. Isotope abundance is highly variable within and between trees. Before modifying, it was necessary to identify important sources of this isotope variability to ensure that I included the major components in the model. Six study sites across a climate gradient in Oregon incorporated the broad range of climate types necessary to explore [delta]13C variability, and to establish and test the model. Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) was common to all sites across the gradient. Patterns of [delta]13C variability within the canopy of Douglas-fir trees implied that xylem hydraulics pose important limitations to carbon uptake. Branch length was significantly correlated with [delta]13C in the foliage at branch tips, which suggested that stem hydraulics were involved in the relation, as branch length is a measure of path length of water movement. The importance of hydraulic properties in [delta]13C variability was confirmed by measuring branch hydraulic, specific, and leaf-specific conductivity of the same branches in which [delta]13C was measured. A strong inverse relation between specific and leaf-specific conductivity and foliar [delta]13C was found, as predicted by theory, and confirmed on several age-classes of foliage. The model which best predicted annual variability in [delta]13C in foliage and tree rings over a range of climate types included environmental constraints to stomata and xylem hydraulic properties. The model predicted [delta]13C in foliage west of the Oregon Cascade Mts. extremely well. East of the Cascades, site means were well-characterized, but annual variability was not. Annual variability in tree-ring [delta]13C was poorly characterized by the model, probably because annual variation in whole-canopy hydraulics was inadequately described by the hydraulic measure. Refinements for improving the tree-ring [delta]13C relation are suggested.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on two complementary time-scales, the Holocene (approximately the last 11,500 years) and the last glacial-interglacial cycle (approximately the last 130,000 years) to synthesize evidence of climate variability at the regional and continental scale across Europe and Africa. This is the first examination of historical climate variations at such a scale, and thus sets a benchmark for future research.

Book excerpt: Thermal regimes and heat exchange of the Polar and subpolar regions play a key role in global climatic change. Principal components analysis of instrumental data for the globe indicate that northern high latitude temperatures are a very strong component of global temperature variations. Tree-ring data from thermally responsive sites in Canada and Alaska yield records of polar and subpolar temperature changes for centuries prior to the relatively short period of instrumental measurements. Tree-ring width based reconstructions of Arctic and northern North American temperatures through 1973 reflect the general positive trend in large-scale instrumental data over the past century. These reconstructions, as well as the raw tree-ring measurements, show that this recent period of warming is unusual relative to the prior few centuries. More recently developed data from Canada confirm previous reconstructions. A maximum latewood density chronology from the Northwest Territories shows a stronger climatic response to warm-season temperatures than ring width data from the same trees. The density information also shows a response to several other temperature-related parameters, including ground-level solar radiation measurements. In detecting and quantifying global climatic change, tree-ring analysis of high latitude trees provides evidence of recent wide-scale warming in northern North America. This warming will affect boreal forests, northern waters, and human activities. However, more studies are needed to better determine the extent of recent and possible future climatic change and the resulting environmental consequences.

Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on meeting the requirements established in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material, 2018 Edition, for a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material. The objectives of a radiation protection programme for the transport of radioactive material are to provide for adequate consideration of radiation protection measures in transport; to ensure that the system of radiological protection is adequately applied; to enhance a safety culture in the transport of radioactive material; and to provide practical measures to meet these objectives. The recommendations provided in this Safety Guide are applicable to the transport of radioactive material by all modes on land, water, or in the air, including transport that is incidental to the use of the radioactive material. The intended audience for this Safety Guide includes competent authorities, consignors, carriers, consignees, and operators of ports (e.g. harbours, seaports and airports). It will also be of interest to the employees of public authorities (customs authorities, harbour authorities, port authorities) concerning activities associated with the transport of radioactive material that involve radiation exposure.
