Book Synopsis Great Western Pannier Tank Classes by : David Maidment
Download or read book Great Western Pannier Tank Classes written by David Maidment and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-11-30 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive and fully illustrated history presents an in-depth look at the Great Western Railway’s various pannier tank engines. Though hauling freight was a vital part of Great Western Railway’s history—and where it made the majority of its profit—there are few books devoted to the stout, powerful engines that did the work. In Great Western, Pannier Tank Classes, British Railways expert David Maidment corrects that oversight. This volume explores the large number of 0-6-0 saddle tanks built for both the Great Western Railway and the independent railway companies in South Wales, most of which were converted to pannier tanks in the Churchward and Collett eras. While covering the Armstrong and Dean engines in detail, Maidment goes on to describe the design, construction and operation of the largest class of steam engines built in the UK in the last century: Charles Collett’s GWR 5700 class, examples of which were still being built after nationalization. Collett also designed pannier tank engines for branch passenger and freight work, and his successor Frederick Hawksworth continued the GW tradition with a tapered boiler version. All of these are discussed in depth in terms of their design and service. A concluding chapter covers further designs that were never built.
Book Synopsis Esteban Vicente by : Elizabeth Frank
Download or read book Esteban Vicente written by Elizabeth Frank and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1995 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Esteban Vicente is the first book devoted to the life and work of the distinguished Spanish-born painter who, at age ninety-two, remains the only one of the original Abstract Expressionists still working at the peak of his powers. His luminous paintings and collages acknowledge the great Spanish tradition of Velazquez and Goya while simultaneously exploring the legacy of such modernist masters as Cezanne, Picasso, Mondrian, and Matisse. This magnificent volume reproduces all of Vicente's most important works from nearly a half century of constant evolution between cycles of austere painterly classicism and a passionate, explosive baroque. Oversize plates, including 84 in full color, present Vicente's paintings, collages, and drawings, capturing his rich, brilliant palette, elegant compositions, economy of means, and passionate clarity of feeling. Esteban Vicente is further enriched by extensive quotations from the artist's writings and interviews; rare documentary photographs; a chronology; lists of solo and group exhibitions and public collections; bibliography; and index. 89 colour & 48 b/w illustrations
Download or read book Dallas 1963 written by Bill Minutaglio and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the months and weeks before the fateful November 22nd, 1963, Dallas was brewing with political passions, a city crammed with larger-than-life characters dead-set against the Kennedy presidency. These included rabid warriors like defrocked military general Edwin A. Walker; the world's richest oil baron, H. L. Hunt; the leader of the largest Baptist congregation in the world, W.A. Criswell; and the media mogul Ted Dealey, who raucously confronted JFK and whose family name adorns the plaza where the president was murdered. On the same stage was a compelling cast of marauding gangsters, swashbuckling politicos, unsung civil rights heroes, and a stylish millionaire anxious to save his doomed city. Bill Minutaglio and Steven L. Davis ingeniously explore the swirling forces that led many people to warn President Kennedy to avoid Dallas on his fateful trip to Texas. Breathtakingly paced, Dallas 1963 presents a clear, cinematic, and revelatory look at the shocking tragedy that transformed America. Countless authors have attempted to explain the assassination, but no one has ever bothered to explain Dallas-until now. With spellbinding storytelling, Minutaglio and Davis lead us through intimate glimpses of the Kennedy family and the machinations of the Kennedy White House, to the obsessed men in Dallas who concocted the climate of hatred that led many to blame the city for the president's death. Here at long last is an accurate understanding of what happened in the weeks and months leading to John F. Kennedy's assassination. Dallas 1963 is not only a fresh look at a momentous national tragedy but a sobering reminder of how radical, polarizing ideologies can poison a city-and a nation. Winner of the PEN Center USA Literary Award for Research Nonfiction Named one of the Top 3 JFK Books by Parade Magazine. Named 1 of The 5 Essential Kennedy assassination books ever written by The Daily Beast. Named one of the Top Nonfiction Books of 2013 by Kirkus Reviews.

Book Synopsis Sailing into History by : Frank Boles

Book excerpt: The Great Lakes create a vast transportation network that supports a massive shipping industry. In this volume, seamanship, cargo, competition, cooperation, technology, engineering, business, unions, government decisions, and international agreements all come together to create a story of unrivaled interest about the Great Lakes ships and the crews that sailed them in the twentieth century. This complex and multifaceted tale begins in iron and coal mines, with the movement of the raw ingredients of industrial America across docks into ever larger ships using increasingly complicated tools and technology. The shipping industry was an expensive challenge, as it required huge investments of capital, caused bitter labor disputes, and needed direct government intervention to literally remake the lakes to accommodate the ships. It also demanded one of the most integrated international systems of regulation and navigation in the world to sail a ship from Duluth to upstate New York. Sailing into History describes the fascinating history of a century of achievements and setbacks, unimagined change mixed with surprising stability.

Book Synopsis Great Powers and Outlaw States by : Gerry Simpson
Download or read book Great Powers and Outlaw States written by Gerry Simpson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of Great Powers and outlaw states is a central but under-explored feature of international society. In this book, Gerry Simpson describes the ways in which an international legal order based on 'sovereign equality' has accommodated the Great Powers and regulated outlaw states since the beginning of the nineteenth-century. In doing so, the author offers a fresh understanding of sovereignty which he terms juridical sovereignty to show how international law has managed the interplay of three languages: the languages of Great Power prerogative, the language of outlawry (or anti-pluralism) and the language of sovereign equality. The co-existence and interaction of these three languages is traced through a number of moments of institutional transformation in the global order from the Congress of Vienna to the 'war on terrorism'.
