Book Synopsis Chinese Scholars and Foreign Policy by : Taylor & Francis Group
Download or read book Chinese Scholars and Foreign Policy written by Taylor & Francis Group and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does China see the rest of the world? One way to answer this question is to look at the work of China's scholars in the field of International Relations (IR). This leads to a second question - to what extent do Chinese IR scholars influence Beijing's foreign policy and outlook? The contributors to this book seek to answer these key questions, drawing on their own first- and second-hand experiences of involvement in scholarly IR debates in China. Discussing fundamental aspects of China's foreign policy such as China's view of the international structure, soft power projection, maritime disputes, and the principle of non-interference, this book provides insights into the hinterland of Chinese foreign policy-making. It is an invaluable reference for global IR scholars, especially those with a direct interest in understanding and predicting China's actions and reactions on a range of international issues.
Book Synopsis Russian Nationalism, Foreign Policy and Identity Debates in Putin's Russia by : Marlene
Download or read book Russian Nationalism, Foreign Policy and Identity Debates in Putin's Russia written by Marlene and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this book discuss the new conjunctions that have emerged between foreign policy events and politicized expressions of Russian nationalism since 2005. The 2008 war with Georgia, as well as conflicts with Ukraine and other East European countries over the memory of the Soviet Union, and the Russian interpretation of the 2005 French riots have all contributed to reinforcing narratives of Russia as a fortress surrounded by aggressive forces, in the West and CIS. This narrative has found support not only in state structures, but also within the larger public. It has been especially salient for some nationalist youth movements, including both pro-Kremlin organizations, such as "Nashi," and extra-systemic groups, such as those of the skinheads. These various actors each have their own specific agendas; they employ different modes of public action, and receive unequal recognition from other segments of society. Yet many of them expose a reading of certain foreign policy events which is roughly similar to that of various state structures. These and related phenomena are analyzed, interpreted and contextualized in papers by Luke March, Igor Torbakov, Jussi Lassila, Marlène Laruelle, and Lukasz Jurczyszyn.

Book Synopsis Debating Foreign Policy in Eighteenth-century Britain by : Jeremy Black
Download or read book Debating Foreign Policy in Eighteenth-century Britain written by Jeremy Black and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on how Britain's foreign policy during the eighteenth century was debated and written about in British society. Taking as a central theme the debate over policy and the development of public culture and politics, the author explores how these were linked to developing relations with Europe and helped shape colonial strategies and expectations. He highlights how widely-shared concerns about such issues as national defense, the strength of the Royal Navy, and trade protection presented little consensus in how they were to be realized, and were the subject of fierce public debate. He underlines how these kinds of issues were not considered in the abstract, but in terms of a political community that was divided over a series of key issues.
Download or read book Identity Crisis written by John Sides and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping in-depth look at the presidential election that stunned the world Donald Trump's election victory resulted in one of the most unexpected presidencies in history. Identity Crisis provides the definitive account of the campaign that seemed to break all the political rules—but in fact didn't. Featuring a new afterword by the authors that discusses the 2018 midterms and today's emerging political trends, this compelling book describes how Trump's victory was foreshadowed by changes in the Democratic and Republican coalitions that were driven by people's racial and ethnic identities, and how the Trump campaign exacerbated these divisions by hammering away on race, immigration, and religion. The result was an epic battle not just for the White House but about what America should be.

Book Synopsis International Relations and the First Great Debate by : Brian Schmidt
Download or read book International Relations and the First Great Debate written by Brian Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an authoritative account of the controversy about the first great debate in the field of International Relations. Of all the self-images of International Relations, none is as pervasive and enduring as the notion that a great debate pitting idealists against realists took place in the 1940s. The story of the first great debate continues to structure the contemporary identity of International Relations, yet in recent years revisionist historians have challenged the conventional wisdom that the field experienced such a debate. Drawing on expert contributors working in Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this book includes key participants in the historiographical controversy. The book assembles the existing scholarship and provides a thorough analysis of the status of the first great debate in the history of International Relations. It is an invaluable examination of the causes and future direction of idealist and realist arguments. International Relations and the First Great Debate will be of interest to students and scholars concerned with the foundations of International Relations.
Book Synopsis Debating a Post-American World by : Sean Clark
Download or read book Debating a Post-American World written by Sean Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is currently the linchpin of global trade, technology, and finance, and a military colossus, extending across the world with a network of bases and alliances. This book anticipates the possible issues raised by a transition between American dominance and the rise of alternative powers. While a ‘post-American’ world need not be any different than that of today, the risk associated with such a change provides ample reason for attentive study. Divided into four parts, 50 international relations scholars explore and discuss: Power Transitions: addressing issues including the rise of China; the passing of American primacy and the endurance of American leadership. War and Peace: addressing nuclear weapons; the risk of war; security privatization and global insecurity Global Governance: addressing competition, trade, the UN, sovereignty, humanitarian intervention, law and power. Energy and the Environment: addressing resource conflict, petrol, climate change and technology. This unique project offers a compilation of disparate arguments by scholars and policy practitioners, encompassing a plurality of disciplines and theoretical perspectives. By providing clarity and focus to this essential debate on the future of the world in the next several decades, Debating a Post-American World will be of interest to students and scholars of International Relations and global politics, American politics, US Foreign policy and International Security.
Book Synopsis Is This the End of the Liberal International Order? by : Niall Ferguson
Download or read book Is This the End of the Liberal International Order? written by Niall Ferguson and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2017-11-04 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth semi-annual Munk Debate pits Niall Ferguson against Fareed Zakaria to debate the end of the liberal international order. Since the end of World War II, global affairs have been shaped by the increasing free movement of people and goods, international rules setting, and a broad appreciation of the mutual benefits of a more interdependent world. Together these factors defined the liberal international order and sustained an era of rising global prosperity and declining international conflict. But now, for the first time in a generation, the pillars of liberal internationalism are being shaken to their core by the reassertion of national borders, national interests, and nationalist politics across the globe. Can liberal internationalism survive these challenges and remain the defining rules-based system of the future? Or, are we witnessing the beginning of the end of the liberal international order? The twentieth semi-annual Munk Debate, held on April 28th, 2017, pits prominent historian Niall Ferguson against CNN’s Fareed Zakaria to debate the future of liberal internationalism.
