Book Synopsis The Internet and European Integration by : Asimina Michailidou
Download or read book The Internet and European Integration written by Asimina Michailidou and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wealth of original empirical data on how online media shape EU contestation. Taking a public sphere perspective, the authors highlight the myths and truths about the nature of audience-driven online media content and show how public demands for legitimacy are at the heart of the much-analyzed politicization of European integration. What EU citizens most intensely debate online are the fundamental questions of what the European institutions stand for and how they can be held accountable. Drawing on innovative and rigorous analysis of online media ownership, journalistic content and online readers’ inputs, the authors piece together the components of the dynamic nature of EU contestation and the degree of convergence towards Euroscepticism across EU member states in the first years of the Eurocrisis. There is no doubt that EU citizens have strong opinions about the EU and interactive online media allow these opinions to come to the fore, to be challenged and amplified both within and beyond national public spheres. Yet, for all its potential to unite European publics, online EU contestation remains firmly anchored in offline news media frames, while citizens and journalists alike struggle to put forward a clear vision of the future EU polity.

Book excerpt: In 2005 hopes for closer European integration were dealt a potentially fatal blow when French and Dutch voters rejected the proposed new European Union constitution. Going beyond the instant analysis of journalists, which placed blame for the failed vote on the two nations' internal politics, Democracy Needs Dispute examines a collection of media accounts of European policy debates to argue that the problem with the EU is its relative lack of vibrant political conflict. Democracy Needs Dispute offers both up-to-date analysis and a rich theoretical understanding of the problems facing further efforts at European integration.

Book Synopsis Debating Europe in National Parliaments by : Frank Wendler
Download or read book Debating Europe in National Parliaments written by Frank Wendler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates recent public debates about the European Union (EU) in national parliaments, which have become the primary arena for public debate about the EU. Responding to claims about a politicization of European governance, the author investigates the link between two dimensions of debate – the discursive justification and party political contestation of decision-making in the EU. Embedded in a comparison between the legislatures of four Member States (Austria, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom), the main finding of the book is that generalizable links can be identified between the use of different argumentative frames and patterns of party political polarization. These insights help to clarify the context conditions in which patterns of left/right and government/opposition politics are replaced by more atypical forms of polarization. In a comparative perspective, the author demonstrates that party political factors are a more relevant factor for variation than thematic or country-specific cultural or institutional factors. Case studies include debates on EU Treaty Reform, the Eurozone crisis, and EU enlargement.

Book Synopsis Contesting Europe by : Pieter De Wilde
Download or read book Contesting Europe written by Pieter De Wilde and published by ECPR Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the way politicians and citizens evaluated the European Union and the process of European integration in public debates during the 2009 European Parliament elections. It presents detailed and rigorous content analysis of online media where citizens directly and voluntarily responded to news stories posted by journalists. New evidence is presented about the dynamic nature of contestation about Europe on the internet and the degree of convergence towards Euroscepticism across EU member states. Such convergence poses new challenges for democratic representation in the EU and provides insight into the public basis for a legitimate European Union. 'In this book European contestation has come of age. Pieter de Wilde, Asimina Michailidou and Hans-Jorg Trenz deliver a tour de force in mapping the multifaceted debate about Europe among parties and citizens in twelve countries. Informed by rich media data they convincingly argue that opposition as well as support for Europe comes in different shades: it can be partial, conditional, or temporal. This is a wonderfully nuanced book for scholars, students and policy makers concerned about Europe's future.' Liesbet Hooghe, W. R.
