How deep into the depths of despair must author Joel Lee Russell descend before he learns to open his body, mind and soul to the magnificence of devotion and faith? After surviving a tortured childhood, Russell's challenges continue when he arrives in Vietnam during the height of the Tet Offensive. While Russell's outfit of Marines dwindles from 250 men to 79 in a matter of four hours, he beseeches God to save him and promises to dedicate his life, from that moment on, to something greater than himself. Even though we think we are eager to learn our lessons and to improve ourselves, the training we endure is often complicated and challenging. After Joel Lee Russell, nicknamed Last Days Joel, repeatedly escapes death's sting, he opens himself to a divine beauty that soars beyond his belief. Download or read book Death written by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ours is a death-denying society. But death is inevitable, and we must face the question of how to deal with it. Coming to terms with our own finiteness helps us discover life's true meaning. Why do we treat death as a taboo? What are the sources of our fears? How do we express our grief, and how do we accept the death of a person close to us? How can we prepare for our own death? Drawing on our own and other cultures' views of death and dying, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross provides some illuminating answers to these and other questions. She offers a spectrum of viewpoints, including those of ministers, rabbis, doctors, nurses, and sociologists, and the personal accounts of those near death and of their survivors. Once we come to terms with death as a part of human development, the author shows, death can provide us with a key to the meaning of human existence.

Download or read book Scriptural Exegesis written by Deborah A. Green and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scriptural Exegesis gathers voices from an international community of scholars to consider the many facets of the history of biblical interpretation and to question how exegesis shapes spiritual and cultural creativity. Divided into four broadly chronological sections that chart a variety of approaches from ancient to modern times, the essays examine texts and problems rooted in the ancient world yet still of concern today. Eighteen chapters incorporate the expertise of contributors from a diverse range of disciplines, including ancient religion, philosophy, mysticism, and folklore. Each embraces the challenge of explicating complex and often esoteric writings in light of Michael Fishbane's groundbreaking work in exegesis.
Book Synopsis Nietzsche, German Idealism and Its Critics by : Katia Hay
Download or read book Nietzsche, German Idealism and Its Critics written by Katia Hay and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nietzsche is known as a severe critic of German Idealism, but what exactly is the relation between his thought and theirs? And how does Nietzsche's stance differ from the critique of idealism in Kierkegaard and Schopenhauer? The papers from leading international specialists in German Idealism, Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche address these questions. The aim of the volume is to introduce novel ways of addressing the complex relations between Nietzsche and his immediate philosophical predecessors: Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Hegel, Schelling, Fichte and Kant. The focus is on the profound interconnections and affinities between their ways of thinking. Each paper considers one particular aspect of Nietzsche's philosophy (such as his notion of "spirit", "law", "power", "will", his "physiology" or his critique of morality) in relation to the above-mentioned philosophers. This largely systematic approach reveals surprising affinities between Nietzsche and the German idealists, despite their patent differences and generates new perspectives from which to understand and reinterpret Nietzsche's thought. Contributors: Maria J. Branco; Danielle Cohen Levinas; Joao Constancio; Carlos J. Correia; Katia Hay; Lore Hühn; Jose Justo; Elisabetta Marques J.de Sousa; Frederick Neuhouser; Leonel R. dos Santos; Philipp Schwab; Herman Siemens.

Book Synopsis Here All Dwell Free by : Gertrud Mueller Nelson
Download or read book Here All Dwell Free written by Gertrud Mueller Nelson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-06-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every human being lives a fairy tale -- an unconscious myth that works on us, shapes us, and points to our truth. Often the story is filled with danger and foreboding. The good news is, for those who examine it closely, the story also carries with it balm and healing. 'Here All Dwell Free' is an in-depth exploration of two classic fairy tales that have particular significance for women. The Handless Maiden will resonate in a special way with women who feel powerless in the contemporary world. In a similar way, Briar Rose is about falling asleep and waking, of abandonment and allowing oneself to be discovered by love. While the stories recounted here may be ancient, they speak to us today in unmistakable symbolic language, inviting us to enter them, live them, and be made whole again.

Download or read book Carved in Stone written by and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evocative photographs and essay illuminate early American gravestones Gravestones are colonial America's earliest sculpture and they provide a unique physical link to the European people who settled here. Carved in Stone book is an elegant collection of over eighty fine duotone photographs, each a personal meditation on an old stone carving, and on New England's past, where these stones tell stories about death at sea, epidemics such as small pox, the loss of children, and a grim view of the afterlife. The essay is a graceful narrative that explores a long personal involvement with the stones and their placement in New England landscape, and attempts to trace the curious and imperfectly documented story of carvers. Brief quotes from early New England writers accompany the images, and captions provide basic information about each stone. These meditative portraits present an intimate view of figures from New England graveyards and will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in early Americana and fine art photography.
Book Synopsis Death's Summer Coat by : Brandy Schillace
Download or read book Death's Summer Coat written by Brandy Schillace and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is something we all confront—it touches our families, our homes, our hearts. And yet we have grown used to denying its existence, treating it as an enemy to be beaten back with medical advances. We are living at a unique point in human history. People are living longer than ever, yet the longer we live, the more taboo and alien our mortality becomes. Yet we, and our loved ones, still remain mortal. People today still struggle with this fact, as we have done throughout our entire history. What led us to this point? What drove us to sanitize death and make it foreign and unfamiliar?Schillace shows how talking about death, and the rituals associated with it, can help provide answers. It also brings us closer together—conversation and community are just as important for living as for dying. Some of the stories are strikingly unfamiliar; others are far more familiar than you might suppose. But all reveal much about the present—and about ourselves.
Book Synopsis John Ford: Critical Re-Visions by : Michael Neill
Download or read book John Ford: Critical Re-Visions written by Michael Neill and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-11-24 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, John Ford: Critical Re-Visions offers a wholesale reconsideration of the reputation of a major Caroline playwright. The volume takes an historical perspective and offers a better understanding of Ford's achievement in the light of the theatrical and social conditions of his own day. The collection of essays was assembled for the 400th anniversary of the playwright's birth. The contributors, well known scholars in the field, work from a variety of critical positions: insights associated with a new historicist, feminist, structuralist and post-structuralist theory are represented, together with more traditional approaches. The essays range from detailed readings of the individual plays, including 'Tis Pity She's a Whore, Perkin Warbeck, Love's Sacrifice and The Lady's Trial to more wide-ranging studies of imagery and theatrical convention; several help to illuminate our understanding of Ford's plays in the theatre of his own time, while another offers a detailed account of post-war stage, film and television productions.

Download or read book "Bula" Man-River written by Kiang P Lee and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2013-03-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parable of the Bula man-river is the story of the miraculous life God promises man from the beginning. By creating man in His own likeness, He forever placed man on a path of living the miraculous life. He is divine and we are mortal, and whenever the two intersect, miracles happen. As humans, it’s impossible for man to experience the glory of God’s divine Being, so he experiences miracles – the divine spark. Miracles are foretastes of man’s future in the glorious presence of God. It’s a life of unimaginable, awe-inspiring wonder, both now and future. From the beginning, Adam and Eve experienced this miraculous life firsthand. God lovingly and miraculously planted them a garden-home which had all the resources for their survival and happiness. God did not point to a jungle and charged Adam with planting a garden himself. No, God planted it with His own hands. This miraculous life was man’s destiny from the start, and continues to this day. The whole earth, hanging in the blackness of space, is the larger Edenic home we all share as co-inhabitants of it. But man fails to respond with gratitude to “dress and keep it.” Lost in the jungle of his own narcissistic ‘self,’ man seeks for life’s answers which only the “BULA” man-river can supply. For those who change into the likeness of God’s love, God leads them to a new Eden. This is where the miraculous life is lived as naturally as breathing. This is what this book is about – miracles! It begins with the life of the “BULA” man-river! He is the product of God’s love. It begins with love-gifts from the Father which form the substance of the three-dimensional life of the “BULA” man-river – the Miracle Man. Read about the two wonderful love-gifts of the Father.
