Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Rawlings, London's effervescent 18th Century apothecary and occasional sleuth, tackles his most intriguing case to date. The scene was an exact replica of the one that had taken place twenty-four hours earlier. John Rawlings stood in the shop at Apothecaries' Hall buying the herb known as true-love. The only difference was that both he and the shop owner were buzzing with intrigue as they discussed the extraordinary outbreak of food poisoning which had stricken the liverymen who attended dinner at the Worshipful Society the previous day. And how Liveryman Alleyn might have died had John not given him the remedy of true-love. Except the following day Liveryman Alleyn does die. Under the brief and guidance of London's famous blind magistrate, John Fielding Rawlings is asked to investigate wether it is a deliberate case of poisoning. But who would want to poison the apothecaries? And were they targeting the Society or specifically the deceased? As John searches for gossip, he discovers that a fellow apothecary visited the dying man's house on the morning of his death, that the Beadle had fallen out with the Master, that a bereaved parent whose son died as a result of misdiagnosis has vowed vengeance on the entire Society.

He has also included many of the “best of” lists by more than fifty of the most important contributors to the genre.; Mr. Sobin spent more than two decades gathering the data and lists in this volume, much of that time he used to recheck the accuracy of the material he had collected. Several of the “best of” lists appear here for the first time in book form. Several others have been unavailable for a number of years.; Of special note, are Anthony Boucher’s “Best Picks for the Year.” Boucher, one of the major mystery reviewers of all time, reviewed for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times. From these resources Mr. Sobin created “Boucher’s Best” and “Important Lists to Consider,” lists that provide insight into important writing in the field from 1942 through Boucher’s death in 1968.? This is a great resource for all mystery readers and collectors.; ; Winner of the 2008 Macavity Awards for Best Mystery Nonfiction.

Book excerpt: Hired to investigate a seemingly accidental death, a PI discovers a perverse secret Denver oilman Phillip Townsend is alone in his Jaguar when he drives off the cliff. The police call it an accident, but his widow, half mad with grief, insists it was murder. Her husband was quiet, cautious, boring—so what was he doing on the outskirts of Denver, driving drunk down a lonely mountain road? The Townsends’ lawyer hires Jacob Lomax to look into the matter, letting him know that it would be best if the official version of the story were quietly confirmed. An ex-cop who became a detective in the wake of his wife’s murder, Lomax is too dedicated to his work to simply parrot a police report. Digging through the dead man’s office, he finds a tape that shows Townsend and an accomplice binding, gagging, and raping a teenage girl. The most boring millionaire in Denver, it seems, had a secret that was worth killing for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frazer, with Freud, Marx, and Jung, is one of the thinkers who have had a deep and pervasive influence on modern literature. One of the great nineteenth-century syntheses, The Golden Bough was the culmination of a century of investigations into myth and ritual. John Vickery locates The Golden Bough in the context of its age and shows how, by gathering up many strands of nineteenth-century thought, it embodied the dominant intellectual tradition shaping the modern spirit. The author's intimate acquaintance with an extraordinary range of modern literature enables him to demonstrate the variety of strategies that poets and novelists have used to assimilate The Golden Bough in their individual attitudes and preoccupations. The remaining chapters of the book are devoted to extended discussions of the intellectual, thematic, and format impact of The Golden Bough on Yeats, Eliot, Lawrence, and Joyce. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Donovan Bramwell is a dead walker, a soul who walks on the dark side of life. He's also heir to an ancient Celtic vampire kingdom and its earthly branch known as the Protectorate, a secret society of vampires and humans protecting the mortal realm from evil dead walkers. But Donovan has a deadly secret--he's the one soul capable of destroying the very world he was born to protect. Now his greatest enemy has returned. But as Donovan prepares to save the Protectorate, a female quasi-vampire thwarts his plans and forces him to relive a past he's spent centuries trying to forget. Born a royal Celt with Vampyric blood, Iceni lost her family and her tribe to the Romans and the deadly vampires who befriended the Empire. After spending centuries fighting the dark souls who took away her world, Iceni finally has the chance to avenge her parents' deaths and take back the sacred relic housing her father's ancient powers. But to do so, she needs Donovan Bramwell to join her cause. But first, she must convince the Protectorate heir she's not the enemy. Suffering from a bite gone wrong, Vastos, a Vampyric prince and dead walker as old as time, returns to man's world determined to cure the ailment afflicting his soul. But to do so, he must fight his greatest antagonist, Donovan Bramwell, the one soul keeping him alive and yet killing him at the same time. Vastos has two choices: conquer the Protectorate and take the throne away from Donovan or destroy Iceni and take full control of her father's powers. And to a dead walker vampire running out of time, choosing one option over the other may not matter.

Book excerpt: Aidyn Kelley is talented, ambitious, and ready for a more serious assignment than the fluff pieces she's been getting as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. In her eagerness, she pushes too hard, earning herself the menial task of writing an obituary for an unremarkable woman who's just entered hospice care. But there's more to Clara Kip than meets the eye. The spirited septuagenarian may be dying, but she's not quite ready to cash it in yet. Never one to shy away from an assignment herself, she can see that God brought the young reporter into her life for a reason. And if it's a story Aidyn Kelley wants, that's just what Mrs. Kip will give her--but she's going to have to work for it. Debut author Sara Brunsvold delights with this emotional multigenerational story that shows that the very best life is made up of thousands of little deaths to self. You'll want to be just like Mrs. Kip when you grow up!
