Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Creative non-fiction based upon the romance & actual love letters between two Kentuckians from 1900-1904. Before radio, television, and autos, they carried on their romance separated by 100 miles, a full day's round trip by train and not manageable by buggy or horseback. Times and love were fraught with danger. They faced deadly plagues, putrid water systems, horrific accidents, violence, murders, and vicious political turmoil that included the assassinations of Kentucky Governor William Goebel and U.S. President William McKinley. Women had no vote, few rights, and were blocked from many occupations. Men were expected to be sole financial providers, reliably smart, brave and stable. Life's choices thwarted dreams as both yearned for a bit or sweetness to make life bearable. About the only reliable things they had were local daily newspapers and US Postal Service mail delivery 365 days a year (366 in leap years), including Sundays and holidays. Their letters engendered curiosity & this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of World War II, it was assumed that the letters of Heinrich Himmler were lost. Yet sixty years after Himmler's capture by British troops and subsequent suicide, the letters mysteriously turned up in Tel Aviv and, in early 2014, excerpts were published for the first time by the Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonot providing a rare, if jarring, glimpse into the family life of one of Hitler's top lieutenants while he was busy organizing the mass extermination of the Jews. It was generally held that Himmler, once appointed head of the SS, blended seamlessly into the Nazi hierarchy. The image that emerges, however, is more subtle. Himmler is seen here as a man whose observations can often be characterized by their unpleasant banality; a man whose obsession with family life ran alongside a brutal detachment from all things human, a serial killer who oversaw the persecution and extermination of all Jews and other non-Aryans, and those opposed to the regime. His letters remove any doubt that he was the architect of the Final Solution, and a man who was much closer to Hitler than many historians previously thought. The letters in this edition were arranged by Katrin Himmler, the great-niece of Heinrich and Marga Himmler, and Michael Wildt, a renowned expert on the Nazi regime, who also provide historical context to the letters and their author. The entire work was translated by Thomas S. Hansen and Abby J. Hansen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1665 and London faces two deadly threats – the devastating plague, and dangerous rumblings of a rebellion against the King, Charles II. In the frontline of the plague, the ‘first responders’, are the ancient women of the parish: the Viewers, Keepers and Searchers, who must deal with the sick, the dying and the dead. Political and religious differences split the city. Some yearn for the days of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritan Commonwealth, others rejoice in the pleasure loving King’s return. A tale of friendships and feuds, songs and psalms, plots and betrayals, this exciting and original novel paints a rich picture of life – and death – in the perilous streets of plague-struck London. ‘The product of capacious knowledge, a sharp, affectionate eye and a well-tuned ear, this book is a reel through the stinks and miasmas of plague-stricken London in the company of reflective, funny, fatalistic souls from another time entirely, who are also – mysteriously, deliriously – us. This is a classic.’ – Janita Cunnington, author of The River House and Child of Mine ‘The Searchers walk the streets with their red wands, seeking out sufferers of the plague. Rob Wills brings these forgotten women of history to dramatic life in his vast sweep of a novel, full of character and intrigue. If you like Hilary Mantel, you’ll love this.’ – Bronwen Levy, writer and critic To find out more about “Plague Searchers” – the people, the politics, the songs, the sources – you’ll find a wealth of information on the website: Plaguesearchers.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation of Likhachev’s Poetika Drevnerusskoy Literatury (The Poetics of Early Russian Literature), provides a description of the basic themes of early (tenth to seventeenth century) Russian literature. Likhachev compares literary narrative with narrative used in the representational arts. Furthermore, Likhachev stresses the genre-based character of medieval Russian literature and shows how choice of style in medieval times depended on a genre with its own specific etiquette and how innovation was discouraged. The text contrasts medieval abstraction and modern realism, as Likhachev shows how realisticness gradually breaks through in specific situations—such as those of princely crimes. Likhachev draws contrasts in three different areas: the basic stock of symbols and comparisons used in early Russian literature with those used in modern literature, artistic time in folklore and early Russian literature, and artistic space in folklore and early Russian literature. Likhachev traces the gradual development into modern artistic time through a comparison of the chronicle, the first Russian play, the seventeenth century writer Avvakum, and three modern authors, Goncharov, Dostoevsky and Saltykov-Shchedrin. Finally, the text gives a justification for studying early literatures. This book will be invaluable for students of Russian, medieval and comparative literature.

Boening, a simple gathering one day at a friend’s house ended up turning into something much more than simple. While talking and enjoying each other’s company, her host jumped up, left the room, and, when she returned, she brought a box of letters to Boening. These letters took Boening’s breath away, as they were filled with such beautiful words of love, which she felt had to be shared with the world. Love Letters in a Box gives us a peek into American history from 1902-1912 and the lost art of love letter writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation, first published in 1993, presents a little-known medieval romance to readers who do not know Old French, or who are generally unfamiliar with the literature of the Middle Ages. Probably composed between 1190 and 1220, the major interest of Amadas and Ydoine to modern readers is that its basic structure is unflinchingly conventional, its plot is predictable yet charming, and its social and moral attitudes reflect the context in which it was produced. The poet explores how love, chivalry and martial prowess can translate a would-be knight into a powerful lord. Its purpose is largely that of wish-fulfilment for young men, and as such it is highly indicative of the ethos surrounding marriage that prevailed in medieval French society.
