Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dear So the establishment was reduced to its very smallest dimensions, and the old servants dis charged ruthlessly, and the old plate packed up and dispatched to the pretty little house in May Fair, that suited my lady's taste so much better, or the gay little villa on the Thames, near Richmond, which was rustic enough for her When she needed a change from London; and for the rest of the year there was country house visiting, and a few weeks at Cowes, and a run to one of the German Spas, or a winter month or two on the Riviera. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idonia: A Romance of Old London At such times Simon Powell was Often my com panion, a lad of a strange wild spirit, lately come out of Wales across the Channel, and one I loved for the tales he had to tell of the admirable things that hap pened long since in his country, and indeed, he said, lately too. I cannot call to mind the names of the host of princes that filled his histories, save Arthur's only; but of their doings, and how they talked familiarly with beasts and birds, and how they exchanged their proper shapes at will, and how one of them bade his com panions cut off his head and bear it with them to the White Mount in London; which journey of theirs con tinned during fourscore years; Of all these marvels I have still the memory, and of Simon Powell's manner Of telling them, which was very earnest, making one earnest who listened to him. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A blackly comic late 20th-century murder mystery set against the looming end of the millennium, in which a woman tries to orchestrate her own extinction—from "one of the most gifted novelists of his generation" (TIME). “Lyrical and obscene, colloquial and rhapsodic." —The New York Times First published in 1989, London Fields is set ten years into a dark future, against a backdrop of environmental and social decay and the looming threat of global cataclysm. As the dreaded Y2K approaches, Nicola Six, a “black hole” of sex and self-loathing, has chosen her thirty-fifth birthday, November 5, 1999, as the date of her own murder. Whom to manipulate into killing her is the question; her choice wavers between violent lowlife Keith Talent, who is obsessed with winning a darts tournament, and a dimly romantic banker named Guy Clinch. When Samson Young—a writer suffering from a long bout of writer’s block—stumbles upon these three, he believes he has found a story that will write itself. A highly unusual mystery with an unexpected twist at the end, London Fields is also a corrosively funny narrative of pyrotechnic complexity and scalding moral vision.

The majority of the objects themselves, upon which I have written, are old - and the accounts we have of them are old - but, as I have before stated, the theme is exhaustless. I have principally endeavored to describe persons and things as I found them - nothing more. The pleasure of occupying many leisure hours has repaid me for all trouble taken with my notes and thus, with a clear conscience and without apology, I cast the drop into the fathomless sea of books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Victorian London May I dare to hope that a few words of preface to this book of "Memories" will hold my readers' attention for a moment, as it is very necessary that they should be written? In my former volume of "Recollections," no reference was made to certain episodes which must always rank among the great days of my life, yet which did not fit in with the general tenor of that book. They had an interest all their own. They could not be dismissed with a passing tribute. They merited more - much more. They haunted me in many a lonely Highland glen, or by the waters of some lapping lake - and the time seems now come when they can be put on record. For it was my happy fate to be from time to time, from early youth onwards, the guest of a beloved relation, to me as a sister, in her London home, where she was the centre of a singularly attractive circle. Albeit a rich and handsome young married woman with abundance of energy and leisure, she cared nothing for gay society, but sought and was sought by many either already prominent in the world of letters, or destined to become so. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unnoticed London Bond Street, because they are obsessed by the idea that to see London requires some occult store of knowledge and energy, and their eyes are sealed to the interest and beauty that lie around their path. Finally there are people like the old lady who, when she heard I was writing a book about old London, asked with astonishment, Is there anything old left in London? I hasten to add that I have not tried in the following pages to tell of every interesting place or even of all there is of interest in the places visited, - only enough, I hope, to make people go and see for themselves and have the pleasure of discovering the rest. I am not afraid that if they once go to the Chapter House they will miss any of its beauties: my dread is lest they fail to go there, from the vision of a plethora of things they think they have no time to see. For I want more than anything else to prick the curiosity of the travellers up and down the streets of the city who miss so much pleasure that they might have so easily, because they are not alive to all the interesting and un expected things that wait for their coming just round the corner. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NYRB Classics presents 3 darkly humorous, atmospheric novellas of love and disappointment, set in a run-down London pub after WWI—from the author of the Hitchcock classics Gaslight and Rope. “Bleak and brilliant. . . an authentic lost classic.” —The Guardian Featuring a Dickensian cast of pubcrawlers, prostitutes, lowlifes, and just plain losers who are looking for love—or just an ear to bend—Hamilton’s novels are a triumph of deft characterization, offbeat humor, unlikely compassion, and raw suspense. In recent years, Hamilton has undergone a remarkable revival, with his champions including Doris Lessing, David Lodge, Nick Hornby, and Sarah Waters. Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky is a tale of obsession and betrayal that centers on a seedy pub in a run-down part of London. Bob the waiter skimps and saves and fantasizes about writing a novel, until he falls for the pretty prostitute Jenny and blows it all. Kindly Ella, Bob’s co-worker, adores Bob, but is condemned to enjoy nothing more than the attentions of the insufferable Mr. Eccles; Jenny, out on the street, is out of love, hope, and money. We watch with pity and horror as these three vulnerable and yet compellingly ordinary people meet and play out bitter comedies of longing and frustration. Included: The Midnight Bell (1929) The Siege of Pleasure (1932) The Plains of Cement (1934)

This ebook contains 3 unabridged classic books with over 200 original illustrations by Frank T. Merrill and Reginald B. Birch in one ebook. Louisa May Alcott (1832 – 1888) was an American novelist best known as author of the novel Little Women and its sequels Little Men and Jo's Boys. Little Women and Good Wives, published in 1868 and 1869 respectively, is a story following the four March sisters and their friend Theodore "Laurie" Lawrence in Massachusetts in the 1800's. The four girls each exhibit individual flaws and much of the plot is concerned with their journey to correct themselves, always supporting each other in the end despite their numerous squabbles. Margaret "Meg" March is the eldest sister and at the beginning of the tale is very preoccupied with materialistic possessions, Josephine "Jo" March is a tomboy with a fiery temper, Elizabeth "Beth" March is shy and gentle and Amy, being the youngest March sister, is spoilt and therefore prone to temper tantrums. Little Women follows the sisters for about a year, but Good Wives skips forward in time regularly so that by the end they are all of adult age. Little Men, or Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1871. Little Men follows the adventures of Jo March and her husband Professor Bhaer as they try to make their school for boys a happy, comfortable, and stimulating place. Jo's Boys was first published in 1886. The novel is the final book in the unofficial Little Women series. In it, Jo's "children," now grown, are caught up in real world troubles.
