Book excerpt: I am writing to you because I can’t say this in person. You are leaving for college tomorrow, and I will miss you terribly. We were really good friends, but we never really talked you know? About things that really matter. These are a few things I should have told you, but did not. For you to understand, we need to go back. Before I really met you. Back to when we were just two people sitting next to each other in Journalism; when we were mere acquaintances.

Book Synopsis Dear and Glorious Physician by : Taylor Caldwell
Download or read book Dear and Glorious Physician written by Taylor Caldwell and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestseller “alive with the bustle of ancient times” that “movingly reconstructs St. Luke’s search for God” (The New York Times). Two millennia ago, a Greek man known as Lucanus traveled to Alexandria to study medicine. He would become one of the greatest doctors of his time and heal the sick all throughout the Mediterranean world. But his extraordinary work as a physician is not his greatest legacy. Today he is known around the world as St. Luke—author of the third Gospel of the New Testament. He never laid eyes on Jesus, but he heard about Christ’s life and death, and saw God in Him. He retraced Jesus’s steps and sought out those who had known Him—including His mother, Mary. The resulting account is a cornerstone of Christianity and world history. From the celebrated author of Captains and the Kings and Great Lion of God comes this stirring and deeply inspiring story, counted “among the bestselling religious novels of all time” (The New York Times Book Review). “A portrait so moving and so eloquent I doubt it is paralleled elsewhere in literature.” —Boston Herald “Magnificent. . . . [Caldwell] has made St. Luke a real and believable man and recreated on a vast canvas the times and people of his day. You see as large as life all the glory and decadence of Rome and all the strife, turmoil and mysticism of Africa. . . . A glowing and passionate statement of belief.” —The Columbus Citizen

Book excerpt: LUKE, Ambassador of the Word, is the story of a man of whom we know very little. Credited with writing the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts, the New Testament gives hi only thirteen words. Tradition suggests Luke was a highly educated Greek physician, a native of Antioch and, later, a coworker with the Apostle Paul, deeply involved in the Early Church. Luke wrestles with his faith and his relationship to the Roman Empire through a man named Theophilus. In Luke we have theologian and a historian, a story worth telling.

Download or read book Hello Luke, I'm Mary written by Bob Cyphers and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gospel writers Matthew, Mark and John were eyewitnesses to the life of Jesus. Luke was not, and in fact does not appear in the Bible until his travels with Paul around 50 AD. And while the other three Gospels are extremely similar, nearly half of Luke’s text is original, and cannot be found elsewhere, including some sixty stories and parables. The nativity scene we worship on Christmas Eve is from Luke. The only reference of Jesus’s childhood, being left at the temple, can only be found in Luke. How does the Virgin Mary’s song, the Magnificat, wind up in the Gospel of Luke? “I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you,” Luke tells us. And he does, with more detail than the other Gospel writers, who trace Jesus’s lineage back to King David. Luke takes it back to Adam and Eve. So how does a man who was not a witness to the life of Jesus, and who does not appear until decades after his death, have the most relevant details on our Savior’s life? There can only be one answer.
