Book excerpt: Thomas Bernhard was one of the most original writers of the twentieth century. His formal innovation ranks with Beckett and Kafka, his outrageously cantankerous voice recalls Dostoevsky, but his gift for lacerating, lyrical, provocative prose is incomparably his own.One of Bernhard's most acclaimed novels, The Loser centers on a fictional relationship between piano virtuoso Glenn Gould and two of his fellow students who feel compelled to renounce their musical ambitions in the face of Gould's incomparable genius. One commits suicide, while the other-- the obsessive, witty, and self-mocking narrator-- has retreated into obscurity. Written as a monologue in one remarkable unbroken paragraph, The Loser is a brilliant meditation on success, failure, genius, and fame.

She did the maths, counting it out on her fingertips - it was only eight hundred and sixty-four hours old. She hadn't even finished writing the thank-you cards yet ...'. Stella de Villiers doesn't know which way is up. Rewind forty-eight hours and she has the perfect life. Married to a great guy. A super-supportive family around her. Awesome friends. In fact, the only fly in her ointment is that her job is, well, just a bit crap. As sex column aunt Dr Dee she has to deal with a slew of correspondence about the ickiest of things when all she really wants is to be taken seriously as a journalist. And then, just when it seems like things can't get any worse on the work front, Stella's dream job - features writer - is given to the über-cool Yolanda. Upset and disappointed, Stella calls her husband Max to tell him what's happened, but instead she tells a small untruth - just a little white lie - that slowly but surely unravels her whole perfect universe. Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, Poppy is on a trip of a lifetime with her best friend Buck. America, India, Holland, Germany, France - for a twenty-one-year-old Capetonian who's never been further than Hermanus it's a whole new world. But will Poppy find more than she bargains for on her travels? Is she falling in love with travelling or falling in love while travelling? How do you tell which way is up when you don't even know where you are?

It started with a noisy neighbor and an angry note, filled with as much rage as I could cram in there. Then I got one back, and began an exciting, heated letter exchange. I can say anything I want to him because we’ll never meet. I can’t help daydreaming about what he looks like, until the man of my dreams walks into my life, and I'm taken on a wild ride I never expected. I have a thing for a woman I’ve never even met. Her notes make me laugh, and I wouldn’t say half of these things to her face, but that’s the best part. I love hiding behind the anonymous letters. No matter how bad my day is, I know I’ll have a note from my dream girl, and I crave to read those three little words at the bottom of every letter: Sincerely, F*ck You. When I start working on a new renovation, I'm pleasantly surprised by the smart and sassy woman I meet. She’s everything I’ve ever wanted. If only the world wasn’t against us every time I try to ask her out. Tropes: romcom, neighbors, workplace, meet cute, secret letters, enemies to lovers, mistaken identity, blue collar romance, small town romance

Book excerpt: This “fascinating” biography details the rise of the first Jewish Miss America, TV star, and political player—and the scandal that toppled her career (The New York Times). When Bess Myerson, the Bronx-born daughter of Jewish immigrants, was crowned Miss America in 1945, she was determined to break down gender barriers and be more than a beauty queen. Amid rampant anti-Semitism, she took advantage of her reign to call for an end to bigotry and hate. Then, after more than two decades as a glamorous television personality, Myerson took on corporate America, applying her celebrity as a consumer advocate to become an influential New York City political figure credited with helping elect Mayor Edward I. Koch. But behind the glittering public image, Myerson struggled with unhappy marriages. Then, in her early sixties, she found love with a much younger married man. The romance put her at the center of a political corruption scandal that led to federal charges brought by US Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, ending the reign of Queen Bess, New York’s favorite daughter, after more than forty years. Award-winning investigative journalist Jennifer Preston reveals Myerson’s fascinating life story in this engaging biography. Featuring interviews with Myerson herself and a new introduction from the author, Queen Bess remains the most comprehensive account of this ambitious and talented woman who inspired, entertained, and shocked millions.

Book excerpt: For over a century, Jews have been identified with liberalism. Not only have they been a driving force behind the spread of liberal politics; they have also been steadfastly loyal to a doctrine that promised them both safety and political acceptance. Recent evidence suggests that their commitment has not waned. But while Jews continue to stand up for other groups and "vote their conscience", contends Ruth Wisse, the liberal commitment to the Jews is not nearly so strong. Whenever Jews have been attacked - from the trial of Captain Dreyfus to the sustained military and political war against Israel - liberals have been slow to defend Jewish rights and have preferred instead to hold the Jews responsible for the persistence of their enemies. The explanation for this liberal default, Wisse argues, is the survival and success of anti-Semitism. This irrational idea continues to flourish throughout the world, despite the destruction of the fascist and communist regimes that were its deadliest twentieth-century allies. Wisse points out that anti-Semitism's astonishing resilience has put liberals - including liberal Jews - in an impossible position. The only reasonable response to such a doctrine, Wisse insists, is not appeasement or avoidance, but steadfast confrontation and rejection. Yet such opposition is alien to liberal ideas of open-mindedness and strikes many as intolerant. Unwilling to suspend their optimistic view of man as a benevolent and rational being in order to combat a mortal enemy, most liberals - including many Jews - conclude that Jews themselves must be responsible for the continuing wars against them - thus implicitly condoning their sacrifice. Wisse's book, inspired by afriend's emigration to Israel, traces the Jewish romance with liberalism from its discovery by Jewish integrationists and Zionists to the acceptance today by many Jews of a moral equivalence between Zionism and the war against it. She also explores, among the many contradictions of modern Jewish politics, the ambiguous question of Jewish "chosenness", and the Jewish longing for acceptance in a larger human family; the successful Arab war of ideas against Israel; and the dilemma of Jewish writers and intellectuals who wish to transcend their parochializing siege. Above all, she shows how and why anti-Semitism became the twentieth century's most successful ideology and reveals what people in liberal democracies would have to do to prevent it from once again achieving its goal.
