Book excerpt: DEAR HEARTS AND GENTLE PEOPLE From the FOREWORD: This is not a novel. Every scene and incident in this book actually took place, although recounted to the extent that memory, notes, and records allow. The people in the story are real people, some of whom you may already know. In some cases their names have been changed to protect them, or me. This book could be called a micro history centered around my experience of the times' major and minor events. I let the story tell itself. The events told are those of normal, everyday life as it occurs to the author, which is why there is so much small stuff, set against a cosmic background of intriguing information. Hopefully, the grand ideas, that are also the living characters delineated herein, eventually take the day. The grand ideas of the book are the great happenings of history, such as the presence of extraterrestrials, or the great changes in religion that are on our doorstep now. It is a love story too--and maybe you know something about that, but it is also an expose of the institutions in the story. The basic question about a life's meaning, mine and therefore yours, is brought out right away in the Prelude. As in reality, the individual themes of the book are tied together in that unity that makes everything at last a sound and encouraging story. K. A.W.

Book Synopsis America's Songs II by : Michael Lasser
Download or read book America's Songs II written by Michael Lasser and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years continues to tell the stories behind popular songs in our country’s history, serving as a sequel to the bestselling America’s Songs: Stories Behind the Songs of Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley. Beginning in 1890 and ending in post-war America, America's Songs II is a testament to the richness of popular music in the first half of the 20th century. This volume builds on the unique features of the first volume, delving deeper into the nature of the collaboration between well-known songwriters of the time but also shedding light on some of the early performers to turn songs into hits. The book’s structure – a collection of short easy-to-read essays – allows the author to provide historical context to certain songs, but also to demonstrate how individual songs facilitated the popularity of specific genres, including ragtime, jazz, and blues, which subsequently reshaped the landscape of American popular music. America’s Songs II: Songs from the 1890's to the Post-War Years will appeal to American popular music enthusiasts but will also serve as an ideal reference guide for students or as a supplement in American music courses.

Book Synopsis THE HAPPY YEARS by : Larry B. Fullen
Download or read book THE HAPPY YEARS written by Larry B. Fullen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2023-08-22 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ashville enjoyed prosperity after the harsh and lean years of the Depression and WWII. Predominately, low-middle income, there were no social or economic divisions, all were rich in mutual respect and pride of community. As youth, the homogenic culture and ethnicity of our small-town was not recognized. The focus was on the Thursday night dances in the park, the Fourth of July celebration, and winning county sports championships. Teachers were neighbors, compassionate and dedicated to their profession. There was a sense of freedom, but is something was wrong or not to expectations, parents would know about it immediately. An attitude of optimism prevailed, unaware that Ashville, like many rural communities, was not realizing the growth of the metropolitan and industrial areas, and that for the younger generation the future was not likely to be in Ashville. Later in life we understood the blessings and meaning of small-town values, the unique shared experiences, and lasting friendships from growing up in Ashville.
