Book excerpt: One day, while going through some old papers, I came across a letter. I was amazed. It was a letter from my maternal grandmother to me, written when I was a baby yet speaking to me as an adult. How did she know that I would read it fifty years later? It was just by chance (or so it seemed) that I found this letter. I never got a chance to know her, so coming from her, it meant a lot. How would you like to reach across time and speak to your grandson? I was just a baby when my grandmother wrote that letter to me, and she passed shortly after. Had she lived a long time, she might have written to me at any stage of my life. Or, spoke to me as an older, wiser adult. No matter if your grandson is a baby, a toddler, a teen or a mature adult, you can pass on your personal thoughts by putting pen to paper. The Dear Grandson journal gives you the ideal medium to do so. There's a page for attaching keepsakes, photos, sketches or the like followed by a lined page for notes, a perfect format for expressing your experience and your thoughts. It's a way to tell him who you were. Why not reach across time? You can, if you want to. Give the gift of your life experience to that unique child that is close to your heart. Give the gift of who you are. Get yours now.
Download or read book The Trickster written by Paul Radin and published by Schocken. This book was released on 1987-09-13 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The myth of the Trickster—ambiguous creator and destroyer, cheater and cheated, subhuman and superhuman—is one of the earliest and most universal expressions of mankind. Nowhere does it survive in more starkly archaic form than in the voraciously uninhibited episodes of the Winnebago Trickster Cycle, recorded here is full. Anthropological and psychological analyses by Radin, Kerényi, and Jung reveal with Trickster as filling a twofold role: on the one hand he is "an archetypal psychic structure" that harks back to "an absolutely undifferentiated human consciousness, corresponding to a psyche that has hardly left the animal level" (Jung); on the other hand, his myth is a present-day outlet for the most unashamed and liberating satire of the onerous obligation of social order, religion, and ritual. With commentaries by Karl Kerényi and C. G. Jung Introduction by Stanley Diamond

Book Synopsis The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev by : Jack V. Haney
Download or read book The Complete Folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev written by Jack V. Haney and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-11-18 with total page 774 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folktales of A. N. Afanas’ev represent the largest single collection of folktales in any European language and perhaps in the world. Widely regarded as the Russian Grimm, Afanas’ev collected folktales from throughout the Russian Empire in what are now regarded as the three East Slavic languages, Byelorusian, Russian, and Ukrainian. The result of his own collecting, the collecting of friends and correspondents, and in a few cases his publishing of works from earlier and forgotten collections is truly phenomenal. In his lifetime, Afanas’ev published more than 575 tales in his most popular and best-known work, Narodnye russkie skazki. In addition to this basic collection he prepared a volume of Russian legends, many on religious themes, an anthology of mildly obscene tales, and voluminous writings on Slavic folk life and Slavic mythology. His works were subject to the strict censorship of ecclesiastical and state authorities that lasted until the demise of the Soviet Union at the end of the twentieth century. Overwhelmingly, his particular emendations were of a stylistic nature, while those of the censors mostly concerned content. The censored tales are generally not included. Up to now, there has been no complete English-language version of the Russian folktales of Afanas’ev. This translation is based on L. G. Barag and N. V. Novikov’s edition (Moscow: Nauka, 1984-1986), widely regarded as the authoritative edition. The present edition includes commentaries to each tale as well as its international classification number.

Book excerpt: Letters to Cody is a self-improvement guide book. The intent of this informational guide is to point out valuable; and moral subjects along with the wisdom of God, the Proverbs of Solomon, and other authors much greater than myself, whom I have learned from. I have heard it said that “experience is the greatest teacher, but it need not be your own experience.” My hopes are to pass on what I believe are the smartest things that I have ever learned, to my Grandson. May this book be of value to others who also share my philosophy. Thank you.

This true story tells of the life John and Tony, two inseparable cousins had during their young years as kids in the Bronx and their adventures together through their teen years and their time in Vietnam.
