Thought-Provoking!This digitally reproduced full edition replica of Galaxy Science Fiction's ground-breaking sci-fi magazine from July 1952 has been brought back to life for a new generation of fans to enjoy! Explore the possibilities of life in the future from the perspective of the 1950's pre-spaceflight era. Several of the stories and commentaries in this 65+ year-old publication are stunningly accurate, while others are amusingly way off base . . .or are they??. All are well written and entertaining, with beautiful illustrations and advertisements in the classic 1950's comic book style. Along with commentary by editor H.L. Gold, each Galaxy issue also contains a book review column by anthologist Groff Conklin, and a Willy Ley science column. The stories in this magazine are written by some of science fiction's most beloved authors, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Robert Sheckley, Fritz Leiber, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, just to name a few. This July 1952 issue contains stories from Mark Clifton, John Wyndham, Frederik Pohl & C.M. Kornbluth, among others. Established in 1950, Galaxy Science Fiction was a pioneer in Science Fiction magazine publishing. Original editor H. L. Gold was interested in sociology, psychology, and other "soft" sciences, and was also willing to publish humorous and satirical stories. Science Fiction historian David Kyle commented in his book A Pictorial History of Science Fiction, 1979, that "of all the editors in and out of the post-war scene, the most influential beyond any doubt was H. L. Gold". The editorship of Galaxy passed from H.L. Gold to Frederik Pohl and then to Ejler Jakobsson during the 1960s. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From auto insurance to ready-to-eat soups and satellite TV services, both national and local advertisers in the United States—and increasingly around the world—invest a great deal of time and money on ads and campaigns in which they directly identify their competitors or refer indirectly to “the other guys.” Yet business decision-makers and advertising creative professionals have long believed that creating successful comparative advertising can be extraordinarily difficult. Many have discovered that a strategic or tactical misstep can easily lead to a disaster, such as negative responses from consumers, a successful legal challenge from one or more competitors, or the escalation of hostilities into an ongoing and damaging comparative advertising war. Comparative Advertising: History, Theory, and Practice offers scholars interested in why many business decision-makers believe they can win our loyalty by running down a competitor—as well as anyone who plans, creates, or pays for advertising—a thorough and timely synthesis of the vast body of historical research, theory, and professional insights devoted to one of advertising’s most frequently debated message tactics. The overall goal of this book is to discover answers to a simple question: Why do so many advertisers often rely on a message tactic that research and professional experience confirms they frequently regret using?

Book excerpt: In this collection of longer essays nested within brief, lyrical meditations, each piece focuses on some micro aspect of everyday life as a means of exploring complex macro systems¿families, dinner parties, vineyards, deserts, nations. For example, Walker¿s own experience as the mother of a micropreemie (a baby born weighing less than one pound, twelve ounces, or before twenty-six weeks gestation), ¿the smallest thing in the world,¿ spurs an exploration of, among other things, the economics of health care, the causes of premature births, and the ethics of extreme interventions. Where the Tiny Things Are is a book of ideas and an exploration of science. It is of the world and of the heart ¿ both intensely personal and expansively empathetic.TABLE OF CONTENTS // Microscopium, Micromeat, Microbarriers, Microsurgery, Microencephaly, Microlecithal, Micropreemies, Microbortions, Microkeratome, Microbladder, Microclimates Lower Sonoran, Micromeria, Microbursts, Micro Prairie Dogs & Micro Turkey Vultures, Micro Snow Leopard, Microorganisms, Micromanagement, Micronize, Microhabitat, Neutrinos, Microwine, Microwind, Microgalaxy, Microwindmills, Microhematocrit, Microsoccer, Microtrain, Microblogs, Microfire, Microtopography, Micromeasures, Microgas, Microisland, Microspikes, Distracted Parents of the Micromanagement Era, Microhaboobs, Microbivalves, Biofuels Will Take You Home, Microbags, Microbiotics, Microapocalpyse

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian English, or rather, the forms of English used in India, have long been a topic of interest for laymen and scholars. For generations, the 'exotic' nature of the transplanted language was commented on, often ridiculed as a matter of unintentional comic. It was only from the 1960s onwards that the local forms of English were recognized for what they are — adaptations of the world language to local needs, and varying to an enormous degree, depending on the speakers' (and writers') education and the uses they make of the language. This acknowledgement came mainly from abroad (and still does); Indians are much less willing to admit to the variation and its communicative functions in the country. Therefore, standard English (if possible in its classical British form) is generally favoured, together with formal written uses often based on the stylistic models provided by English literature from Shakespeare to Dickens. R.R. Mehrotra was one of the first to see the need for a proper sociolinguistic description of the Indian situation, and the forms and functions of English in this complex set-up. He has for a long time collected and analysed the huge range of English around him, with the aim of publishing a collection of texts that reflects the variation within the country along various dimensions, historical, regional, ethnic, social and stylistic. The present collection of texts is typical in many ways, evoking in the content, style and grammatical forms the contexts in which English functions; notes help to put the excerpts into the proper frame to make them intelligible to outsiders.
