Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the pocket guide I wish I had when I first became a general manager of a Mitsubishi dealership in New York. Honestly, I am not the brightest star in the sky and made every mistake anyone could've possibly made. Unfortunately, I see dealer principals/general managers/general sales managers making the same mistakes today. The only difference is the time and consequences of these mistakes. I got my first GM gig in 2004. That was in the beginning days of the Internet, before millennials joined the workforce, and way before any viable disrupters entered the market space. It was a lot easier to get away with mistakes then. I don't think you could get away with making the same mistakes now. The stakes are too high. Automotive retail profit margins are tiny. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), automotive net profit margin as of March 31, 2019 was merely 1.38 percent. As a result, every misstep makes it harder to stay in business. The car business desperately needs better leadership skills, understanding of social media, inventory management, fixed operations, and so much more. There is no educational barrier to the entry into car business, and there are only a handful of universities offering a major in car dealership general management, such as Liberty and Keiser. On top of that, only a tiny percentage of dealer principals and general managers attend the National Automobile Dealer Association University. That means that a vast majority of general managers receive training on the job, even if we took business-related classes in college. The auto business is a different animal. General information will only carry you so far. That is exactly why general managers make the same mistakes year after year. My goal is to break this vicious cycle and provide as much information as possible to ensure that automotive retail survives the disruptions we are witnessing today. We need to be ready for the next generation of car buyers, people who are more computer savvy and not afraid to search for better deals. According to surveys, 80 percent of millennials plan to buy a vehicle in the next five years. In fact, millennials worldwide will buy about 40 percent of all vehicles in the next decade. At the same time, they spend an average of 17 hours on line before going to a dealership. Are you ready for them?

Book excerpt: Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance offers in-depth management coaching in each of these areas -- machinery sales, rentals, service, parts and customer training and retention, and is filled with practical programs to strengthen and increase profitability, cash flow and customer retention.Improving an industrial equipment business has four requirements:1. Measure the dealership against proper benchmark metrics. These 48 Critical Profit Variables are covered in detail in this text.2. Determine where you stand, find the gaps in your performance, Comprehensive self-assessment tools are provided.3. Identify "best practices" of high-performance dealers. Recommendations are made for each business area.4. Energize your company into a continuous improvement program. Numerous team discussion projects are included in the text. McDonald Group Institute for Dealer Development founder and author Walter McDonald has based this text on 40 years' experience in dealer management consulting and over 2,650 dealer management workshops. In many ways, this book is a written reflection of Walt's live dealer management seminars. If you are familiar with his work, you know that he focuses on the real value generating activities of the business. He is in the trenches with the dealer managers and field sales and aftermarket reps who create real value and make it happen every hour of every day in the dealership.McDonald's dealer management guide is an absorbing refresher for informed senior executives and a highly useful handbook for those future dealer leaders and related OEM managers on the way up.This dealer guide actually contains two books, one book with benchmarks and advice on what the numbers mean and the second book on how to improve the numbers. This manuscript could have been subtitled: 'real metrics, real solutions.' The dealer/distributor can analyze its business operations through the performance yardsticks presented in this timely publication.By Nick W. Book excerpt: In this completely revised and updated edition of the customer service classic, Carl Sewell enhances his time-tested advice with fresh ideas and new examples and explains how the groundbreaking “Ten Commandments of Customer Service” apply to today’s world. Drawing on his incredible success in transforming his Dallas Cadillac dealership into the second largest in America, Carl Sewell revealed the secret of getting customers to return again and again in the original Customers for Life. A lively, down-to-earth narrative, it set the standard for customer service excellence and became a perennial bestseller. Building on that solid foundation, this expanded edition features five completely new chapters, as well as significant additions to the original material, based on the lessons Sewell has learned over the last ten years. Sewell focuses on the expectations and demands of contemporary consumers and employees, showing that businesses can remain committed to quality service in the fast-paced new millennium by sticking to his time-proven approach: Figure out what customers want and make sure they get it. His “Ten Commandants” provide the essential guidelines, including: • Underpromise, overdeliver: Never disappoint your customers by charging them more than they planned. Always beat your estimate or throw in an extra service free of charge. • No complaints? Something’s wrong: If you never ask your customers what else they want, how are you going to give it to them? • Measure everything: Telling your employees to do their best won’t work if you don’t know how they can improve.

Consumers are dissatisfied with the sales process in brick and mortar dealerships and that is the driving force behind the rise of Carvana and other industry disrupters. However, it is not too late to fix the way car dealerships operate and improve their reputation. Car Business 101 highlights irrational and counterproductive behavior that car dealers engage in on a daily basis. If you own or work in a car dealership it will be easy to recognize insanity that goes on in Sales, F&I, BDC, HR, and Parts & Service departments. This book offers a fresh perspective and plenty of practical solutions that should be implemented as soon as possible. It is informative and entertaining at the same time. It is a must read for dealer principals, dealership employees, and vendors that service car dealers.

Book excerpt: This is my fourth book on the auto industry, and I have written it because this business is complicated, sophisticated, and ever-changing. Automotive retail is changing slowly, and one of the main reasons for that are the franchise laws. I want to urge you to operate as though franchise laws don't exist to protect you. Carvana is not going anywhere and neither is Amazon. At some point they will join forces. Also, OEM's such as Tesla, Rivian, and many more are going to go directly to the consumer, bypassing the dealer network altogether. At the end of the day, awesome customer service, whether in sales, service, or parts, will keep your customers coming back for more. Poor service and a cumbersome sales experience will drive them elsewhere-Carvana, CarMax, Tesla, Jiffy Lube, Firestone, Good Year, Valvoline, NAPA Parts, Pep Boys, etc.COVID-19 is already having a profound effect on consumer behavior and the way in which we buy and service cars. I predict that there will be two types of dealers after this pandemic abates-the first will change their business operations, adopting frictionless digital and showroom retail; the second will hope that things go back to normal and that nothing needs to change. Unfortunately, the second type of dealer will be out of business. It is ultimately your choice whether to accept change. Consumers will continue to purchase cars. The only question is: Will they will be buying from you?

"Strategies, Tactics, Operations for Achieving Dealer Excellence" is the second volume in McDonald's Master's Program in Dealer Management. It is the companion to his highly regarded, "Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance." "Strategies, Tactics, Operations" is the Comprehensive Guide to building Revenue Center management strengths. McDonald provides a roadmap to deploy highly competitive operations in New and Used Machinery Sales, Rentals Service and Parts. The Master's Program in Dealer Management Executives who utilize these texts in their business are achieving Master's Level insight into dealer management problems. Until now, there was only "tribal knowledge" of best ways to approach and solve dealer operations problems. At last, this "tribal knowledge" has been written indexed in the form of 500 documented Best Practices. THE THREE-VOLUME MASTER'S PROGRAM IN DEALER MANAGEMENT: Book One: "Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance" The first volume in the Dealer Development series, "Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance" focuses on how to optimize quantitative results . This text focuses on the 48 Critical Profit Variables or Performance Benchmark Standards for the five Dealer Revenue Centers: New and Used Machinery Sales, Rentals, Parts and Service. Book Two: "Strategies, Tactics, Operations for Achieving Dealer Excellence" This second volume, begins with building a Strategic Vision and provides a practical "how to" process for creating a winning Strategy. What assets do you use and where? Walter defines the characteristics of Operations Excellence in each revenue center. You examine 500 Best Business Practices of World-Class Dealers. Which are appropriate for you? Which must you do well to gain competitive advantage? Book Three: "Dealer Problem-Solving Handbook"" McDonald's "Dealer Problem-Solving Handbook" is a comprehensive trouble-shooting tool. Sales and Operations Problems are listed by Revenue Center. Causes are discussed and possible solutions are referenced in detail by page in his two texts: "Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance" and "Strategies, Tactics, Operations for Achieving Dealer Excellence." What Dealers are saying: Doug Taylor, President, Owner, Earthborne Trucks and Equipment I initially became acquainted with Walter through reading his first book, "Achieving Excellence in Dealer/Distributor Performance." I read the book many times. The insight it gave me into my own dealership made me wish I had been given this book at the beginning of my career. We were able to apply many of the tools and concepts suggested by Walter in his book to our construction equipment and heavy-duty truck business. Now, after reading Walter's "Strategies, Tactics, Operations for Achieving Dealer Excellence" and understanding how we have applied many of these principals to building our growth and profitability plan, I am confident that my company will be positioned to grow in our market. Applying the right strategy will allow us to execute the changes we need, the first time, and within the reach of our companies resources. Dealers who utilize the Revenue Center Best Practice Audits will be able to identify strengths and weaknesses, will quickly start prioritizing the biggest opportunities for improving their dealerships. For us, a quick comparison of each manager's top 5 weaknesses started to set the framework for revenue center action plans. Dealers who Benchmark their operations against the recommended 48 Critical Profit Variables will be able to rank, by priority, which business areas offer the most incremental profit and growth. I personally encourage every equipment Dealer Principal to at least get Walter's two volume set of Dealer Development books on the principals and practices of Excellence in Dealer Management and get those books in the hands of every key person at the dealership.

Book excerpt: How to Start, Run and Grow a Used Car Dealership on a Budget Start Part-Time or Full-Time Right from Home-Start Your Own Used Car Business It is not hard to become a used car dealer even if you are on a tight budget. As far as the income potential is concern, it is higher than most other side gigs you will find. Just imagine this, you buy a 6 years old Toyota Camry with 87K miles for $4,500, you bring it home, clean it up, fix few minor scratches, wash it wax it, then put it up for sale on Craigslist for $7100. In the first three days you get a few calls, and after 4 test drives, you sell it for $6,600. Let's see how much you made from this sale. You paid $4,400 + you spend $350 on fixing minor issues, so your total cost was $4,750, but you sold it for $6,600, so your net profit from this sale is $6,600-$4,750 = $1,850 Not bad for few hours of work. You see if you buy the right type of cars and price them right, there is no reason you can't sell 2-3 cars a month and make a handsome extra income each month. I have a friend, who has a small insurance business. He has been selling cars on the side for last 25 years, and he told me just by selling 2-3 cars a month, he was able to pay for college for all his three kids. On the other hand, if you want to grow, then start small but reinvest the profit you make from selling each car back into the business and soon you will see, you are growing at a fast and steady pace, but you have to be focused and dedicated. The intensive competition in sales of new cars has reduced profit margins, but on the other hand, this is compensated from the higher profit margin derived from the after sales business. The onus is on the automotive manufacturers to heed to the new importance of the after sales business in reacting to the changes and expectations of customers. This book is written as a practical guide manual on matters relating to the management of the after sales business. The objective is to bring about improvements in all levels of the after sales operations in workshops. The growth, profitability and sustainability of the after sales dealerships are possible when the business is managed in an effective and efficient manner. The chapters in the book covers all matters pertaining to the after sales operations, written in an easy-to-understand manner for practical and straightforward implementation across dealerships.

Book excerpt: Inside DMS - Automotive Dealer Management System, is a 360 degree tour de force of the intricate world of automotive retail and how that relates to automotive dealer management systems (DMS) today and especially the future. The book evolves around the fundamental and pressing issue of reforming how automotive retailers operate to how consumers are rapidly changing their buying behavior, for instance as a result of social media. Business to business and traditional consumer marketing is "dead", while peer-to-peer marketing is taking over. In other words, purchasing of cars is quickly changing from advertising and in dealership sales process induced to be highly influenced by the new social media and consumers' own research. Buyers of cars may be more educated about the product they are interested in that the sales guy at the dealership! THAT is a challenge of potentially cataclysmic proportions for automotive retailers, unless they try to understand the changes and quickly adapt to those. This book is therefore by no means for the readers who dwell in the past, but rather you who would like to understand the opportunities modern technology can bring to automotive retail to solve current and especially "just around the corner" operational issues. With the introduction of a fully, integrated, DMS, in which work flows and data is captured in the same application, financial postings happen real-time and reporting and business intelligence on all levels of an automotive dealership organization is instantly available. The book takes additional steps further into the future of automotive retail. Tremendous operational efficiencies may be achieved, improved customer relationship as well as guidance to the use of social media and even taking bold steps into a completely new vision of what automotive retail of "tomorrow" could be like. The book is of high relevance for just about anyone associated with, working in or just interested in the automotive industry: Dealership principals and executive teams, educators, students, dealership staff, automotive manufacturer leadership and staff, analysts or if you share our affinity for the most wonderful trade: Cars!
