Book excerpt: Nothing comes for free. Not love. Not life. It’s the price that matters, what one is willing to give up to secure happiness... how far into the darkness one is willing to fall. And Hisato is ready to take the plunge. No more trying to balance his role as a Shinjuku detective with that of a yakuza's lover. But his price is yet to be determined and it’s not just his life on the line. The bodies will pile up. The tears will fall. And those who rule the city will be ousted. But once the blood dries on his hands, will Hisato have secured his happy-ever-after? Deadly Gifts is the final book in the Tokyo Nights Trilogy that features an undercover cop whose assignment went wrong in all the best ways, a genderqueer host who will do whatever it takes to protect his lovers, a yakuza ward boss with his eyes on the top prize and his best friend who finally learns to trust the new member of their relationship. A gang conflict will come to its stunning conclusion in a bloody and explosive fashion with the winner taking it all.

Atreus’s wife Aerope gives away the token of his sovereignty, a lamb with a golden fleece, to his brother Thyestes, who has seduced her. Gifts and exchanges always involve a certain risk in any culture, but in the ancient Greek imagination, women and gifts appear to be a particularly deadly combination. This book explores the role of gender in exchange as represented in ancient Greek culture, including Homeric epic and tragedy, non-literary texts, and iconographic and historical evidence of various kinds. Using extensive insights from anthropological work on marriage, kinship, and exchange, as well as ethnographic parallels from other traditional societies, Deborah Lyons probes the gendered division of labor among both gods and mortals, the role of marriage (and its failure) in transforming women from objects to agents of exchange, the equivocal nature of women as exchange-partners, and the importance of the sister-brother bond in understanding the economic and social place of women in ancient Greece. Her findings not only enlarge our understanding of social attitudes and practices in Greek antiquity but also demonstrate the applicability of ethnographic techniques and anthropological theory to the study of ancient societies.

Book excerpt: Kirushima joined the Tokyo Metro Police Force twelve years ago with a purpose, and it wasn’t cleaning the city’s streets of organised crime. Would’ve been a little hypocritical when he was in line to take over the leadership of the Yoong—the Korean group that controlled the port at Odaiba—one day. In the far future, once his current assignment was finished: rooting out the traitor within their organisation. He knew it was never going to be that easy. One assignment for the Metro and Kirushima’s world tilted as Sagaki Jin strode into his life, dragging him back into the shadows and putting his job at the Metro at risk. Put their fledgling relationship at risk too… Sagaki didn’t know Kirushima wasn’t an ordinary corrupt cop. But now his secrets out. A target is on his back and Sagaki’s as tensions within Tokyo grow. Kirushima needs to uncover who the traitor is before time runs out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990 the Department of Graphic Arts at the Louvre made their holdings available to guest curators for a program called Parti Pris, or "Taking Sides". In this program, major cultural figures outside of the discipline of art history organized exhibitions based on the department's collection. Within its first several years, this novel collaboration produced exhibitions curated by philosopher Jacques Derrida and filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Jean Starobinski, noted literary critic and intellectual historian from the University of Geneva, was selected as the third curator in the program. In his exhibition and accompanying essay, Starobinski explores the theme of largesse in its broadest sense. Arguing that gift giving and receiving are fundamental human gestures, he examines graphic and textual representations from the offering of the apple to Eve to Salome's gift of the head of John the Baptist, from the giving of laws to the gift of death. Charity, the poetic gift, and the benefits of Fortune all play a role in Starobinski's extended meditation on the act of donation. Lavishly illustrated and dazzling in its scope and imagination, Largesse is an exemplar of the rich intellectual work that can result from crossing disciplinary boundaries and considering history as a dense network of themes and allusions.

The pursuit to acquire a rare illustrated book turns deadly, and on the eve of her upcoming wedding, library director Amy Webber is drawn into a web of treachery and betrayal that could derail her happy day--and maybe just claim her life. Planning a wedding can be murder--sometimes literally. At a party celebrating their upcoming nuptials, Taylorsford, Virginia library director Amy Webber and her fiancé Richard Muir discover the body of art dealer Oscar Selvaggio--a bitter rival of their host, Kurt Kendrick. Both had been in a heated battle to purchase a rare illustrated volume created by William Morris's Kelmscott Press, so suspicion immediately falls upon Kurt. Amy knows that Kurt has a closet-full of skeletons from his past--but she can't believe he's guilty of murder. Amidst an avalanche of wedding preparations, Amy begins an investigation with the help of her aunt Lydia Talbot and the new mayor of Taylorsford, Sunshine "Sunny" Fields. Much to Lydia's dismay, her boyfriend, art expert Hugh Chen, becomes convinced of Kurt's guilt and launches an investigation of his own. As the case hits painfully close to home, the stakes become impossibly high--and the danger all too real.

Book excerpt: The Depression's winter gloom has crept into the summerhouse of the Hancock Shaker Village in Massachusetts. The dead body of a woman "of dubious reputation" -- a lost soul befriended by many of the brothers and sisters -- sits at a table in an evening gown, snow swirling around her frozen ankles, her lifeless arms stretched out before her. A frantic call goes out to Kentucky, begging Eldress Rose Callahan to brave the February cold and come East, where her keen eye and peerless deductive powers are needed to help lift a terrible weight from the bereft and dwindling community of Believers. But Sister Rose's arrival is greeted with local suspicion and spreading terror when murder once again scars the gentle village. And as the fury of winter further isolates the small village from its suspicious neighbors, Sister rose and her dear friend Gennie Malone must race to unmask a killer who may be mad enough to keep killing throughout this frigid season of dying.

The Probable Future of Mankind is the subtitle of this book, and sums up very definitely what it is about. In his early days Mr. Wells was very preoccupied with a possible future where the world was overrun by monsters from Mars, and really those flights of fancy of his are rather more intriguing than his present notions of the world over-run by committees. However for those whose present allows them enough leisure to toy with the potential Utopias the book is fluent and glib enough of course, although it does lead to those terrible discussions of the Five-Foot-Book-Shelf genre, which are apt to be fluent also, but illustrative of how futile is the mere idea of Utopia.
