Book excerpt: Dan Lynch and Kate should never have fallen in love, let alone get married. They met on Dans 24th birthday and they could never have predicted what was to lie ahead. He had faulty genes and Kate was a divorcee with two sons. Dans family does not approve of their relationship from the beginning. Dans father is a bully, and the coldness of Dans mother is uncanny and unimaginable. This was a family of clever manipulators without emotion or conscience; reeking in dysfunction while never missing a mass or a mission. Devout Catholicism and public perception was their most valued possession. Dan enters into a breakdown and Kate describes how their lives were destroyed by not only his illness but by the bullying from his family. Kate describes how Dans siblings sided with his parents to protect their own image and do all in their power to cover up his illness. They are tormented particularly by his sisters Eilish and Gilly, who fear others finding out about mental health issues in their family and their secrets falling out of the closet. The story tells the evil that can exist in a conflict over land, with an overhanging legacy of abuse and control. It tells of how a man becomes broken, his life destroyed by the hands of his own flesh and blood, and the price tag attached to the old fathers field. This man is obsessed with his land and wants Kate exiled from it at any cost . Vanity, greed, money, land, public perception, and the stigma attached to depression are still very much alive. This book is an insight into the road a person like Dan travels along with his wife who tries to help a man trapped in his suicidal state.

She must rally her supernatural posse to defeat an old enemy and save a new friend, but using her dangerous new death magic might just be the end of everything. * This book is the third in The Crossroads Keeper series. The Christian faith contains many volatile truths that challenged--and continue to challenge--the cultural and religious status quo of the world. None of these have been so world-changing as the assertion that Christ was raised from the dead. In a world where Christian belief and practice are increasingly under fire, this short ebook will give you the confidence to impact the world for Christ--for good

Book excerpt: A masterful work of science writing that’s "both a fascinating biography of von Neumann, the Hungarian exile whose mathematical theories were building blocks for the A-bomb and the digital computer, and a brilliant social history of game theory and its role in the Cold War and nuclear arms race" (San Francisco Chronicle). Should you watch public television without pledging?...Exceed the posted speed limit?...Hop a subway turnstile without paying? These questions illustrate the so-called "prisoner's dilemma", a social puzzle that we all face every day. Though the answers may seem simple, their profound implications make the prisoner's dilemma one of the great unifying concepts of science. Watching players bluff in a poker game inspired John von Neumann—father of the modern computer and one of the sharpest minds of the century—to construct game theory, a mathematical study of conflict and deception. Game theory was readily embraced at the RAND Corporation, the archetypical think tank charged with formulating military strategy for the atomic age, and in 1950 two RAND scientists made a momentous discovery. Called the "prisoner's dilemma," it is a disturbing and mind-bending game where two or more people may betray the common good for individual gain. Introduced shortly after the Soviet Union acquired the atomic bomb, the prisoner's dilemma quickly became a popular allegory of the nuclear arms race. Intellectuals such as von Neumann and Bertrand Russell joined military and political leaders in rallying to the "preventive war" movement, which advocated a nuclear first strike against the Soviet Union. Though the Truman administration rejected preventive war the United States entered into an arms race with the Soviets and game theory developed into a controversial tool of public policy—alternately accused of justifying arms races and touted as the only hope of preventing them. Prisoner's Dilemma is the incisive story of a revolutionary idea that has been hailed as a landmark of twentieth-century thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteen new essays collected in this volume address questions concerning the ethics of self-defense, most centrally when and to what extent the use of defensive force, especially lethal force, can be justified. Scholarly interest in this topic reflects public concern stemming from controversial cases of the use of force by police, and military force exercised in the name of defending against transnational terrorism. The contributors pay special attention to determining when a threat is liable to defensive harm, though doubts about this emphasis are also raised. The legitimacy of so-called "stand your ground" policies and laws is also addressed. This volume will be of great interest to readers in moral, political, and legal philosophy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the upheavals of the Civil War and Reconstruction shattered the plantation economy of the Old South, white southerners turned to the railroad to reconstruct capitalism in the region. Examining the rapid growth, systemization, and consolidation of the southern railroad network, R. Scott Huffard Jr. demonstrates how economic and political elites used the symbolic power of the railroad to proclaim a New South had risen. The railroad was more than just an economic engine of growth; it was a powerful symbol of capitalism's advance. However, as the railroad spread across the region, it also introduced new dangers and anxieties. White southerners came to fear the railroad would speed an upending of the racial order, epidemics of yellow fever, train wrecks, violent robberies, and domination by corporate monopolies. To complete the reconstruction of capitalism, railroad corporations and their allies had to sever the negative aspects of railroading from capitalism's powers and deny the railroad's transformative powers to black southerners. This study of the New South's experience with the growing railroad network provides valuable insights into the history of capitalism--how it evolves, expands, and overcomes resistance.
