Book excerpt: Luke's boots thudded across the lifeless grass while the sound of the gushing river below grew louder the closer as they hiked to the waterway. His gut clenched. A few techies threw cool glances at him, the big shot detective. Many of them remembered his excitement when he left to join a "better" force. Ahead, Conroy slowed at the edge of the gray water. Unkempt brush and litter covered the ground. An overgrown shrub wagged a warning in the breeze and bit into Luke's pant legs. With a curse, he freed his clothing. "Enjoying yourself, detective?" Conroy tossed over his shoulder. "Yeah, it's as much fun as watching the Yankees pound the Sox at Fenway." Luke picked his way through the bushes to join the detective near two uniforms. By Conroy's feet, he found the woman. "The last break in the temperature melted most of the ice and raised the water level," Conroy told him. "She was a floater who got caught in the brambles." Luke crouched beside the woman, who rested in a semi fetal position. She appeared small, about five-feet, and helpless. Her arms and legs were twisted and held prisoner in the wild rose's thorns. A tattered white shirt lay open around her thin body, exposing bare breasts. A shredded bra was pushed up toward her throat. Her lower torso was nude, and she wore no shoes. Wet blonde hair hugged her cheeks. Tape wound around her mouth sealed in her secrets. Her open hazel eyes glistened lifelike, staring up at him. Death couldn't hide the fact the woman had been attractive. "Spooky, isn't it?" Conroy grimaced. "Her eyes make her look alive. I almost expect her to try to speak." If only they'd found her before the scumbag left her like this.Luke swallowed the bitter taste and straightened. "Her sister mentioned a butterfly necklace when she filed the missing person's report. Anyone locate it or come up with a reason for her to be in Ledgeview?" "No jewelry found on the body or near the scene. No one's discovered a reason for her move from the Vermont border where she ran a business and rented an apartment. It's a strange one," Conroy conceded. "We'll find out what happened to her." No one deserved to die this way. Luke's wall of self preservation slammed shut, cutting him off from her pain. "I'll contact the sister." What or who ended the young woman's life with such brutality? He turned and headed up the bank to speak to Rose Blue in private.

Book excerpt: Tell Me No Lies is a celebration of the very best investigative journalism, and includes writing by some of the greatest practitioners of the craft: Seymour Hersh on the My Lai massacre; Paul Foot on the Lockerbie cover-up; Wilfred Burchett, the first Westerner to enter Hiroshima following the atomic bombing; Israeli journalist Amira Hass, reporting from the Gaza Strip in the 1990s; Gunter Wallraff, the great German undercover reporter; Jessica Mitford on 'The American Way of Death'; Martha Gelhorn on the liberation of the death camp at Dachau. The book - a selection of articles, broadcasts and books extracts that revealed important and disturbing truths - ranges from across many of the critical events, scandals and struggles of the past fifty years. Along the way it bears witness to epic injustices committed against the peoples of Vietnam, Cambodia, East Timor and Palestine. John Pilger sets each piece of reporting in its context and introduces the collection with a passionate essay arguing that the kind of journalism he celebrates here is being subverted by the very forces that ought to be its enemy. Taken as a whole, the book tells an extraordinary 'secret history' of the modern era. It is also a call to arms to journalists everywhere - before it is too late.

Book excerpt: This is—for the first time—the full and unedited story behind the sick life and mysterious death of Jeffrey Epstein that is being called one of the most significant scandals in American history He was the billionaire financier and close confidant of presidents, prime ministers, movie stars and British royalty, the mysterious self-made man who rose from blue-collar Brooklyn to the heights of luxury. But while he was flying around the world on his private jet and hosting lavish parties at his private island in the Caribbean, he also was secretly masterminding an international child sex ring—one that may have involved the richest and most influential men in the world. The conspiracy of corruption was an open secret for decades. And then this summer, it all came crashing down. After his arrest on sex trafficking charges in July, it seemed Epstein’s darkest secrets would finally see the light. But hopes for true justice were shattered on August 10 this year, when he was found dead in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, New York. The verdict: suicide. The timing: convenient, to say the least. Now, Epstein: Dead Men Tell No Tales delivers bombshell new revelations, uncovers how the man President Trump once described as a “terrific guy” abused hundreds of underage girls at his mansions in Palm Beach and Manhattan… all while entertaining the world’s most powerful men—including President Clinton, Prince Andrew, and Donald Trump himself. How much did they know about his perversions? And did they take part? How might they have helped him to continue his abuse, and to escape justice for it? What responsibility might they have for his sudden, shocking death? And is there a shocking spy and blackmail story at the heart of the scandal? The answers to these questions and more will be explored in Epstein: Dead Men Tell No Tales with groundbreaking new reporting, never-before-seen court files, and interviews with new witnesses and confidants. Combining the very best investigative reporting from investigative journalists Dylan Howard, Melissa Cronin and James Robertson—who have been covering the case for close to a decade—will send shockwaves through the highest levels of the establishment.

Since the men who downed his plane are shooting at them, she has no choice but to go along with Quade, at least until she can escape. Clare has been punishing herself with her solitary life, her only friend is a sassy character from her books: Roxy. Now it’s as if she’s been thrust into one of her own books. As she learns more about why they’re on the run, she realizes that the maddening man may be her only way to stay alive…and to keep dangerous information from the wrong people. Quade is a man at war with himself. He hates dragging Clare into danger, but he can’t leave her behind. His enemies will think she’s involved and kill her. Book excerpt: For Lucy Campion, a seventeenth-century English chambermaid serving in the household of the local magistrate, life is an endless repetition of polishing pewter, emptying chamber pots, and dealing with other household chores until a fellow servant is ruthlessly killed, and someone close to Lucy falls under suspicion. Lucy can't believe it, but in a time where the accused are presumed guilty until proven innocent, lawyers aren't permitted to defend their clients, and—if the plague doesn't kill the suspect first—public executions draw a large crowd of spectators, Lucy knows she may never find out what really happened. Unless, that is, she can uncover the truth herself. Determined to do just that, Lucy finds herself venturing out of her expected station and into raucous printers' shops, secretive gypsy camps, the foul streets of London, and even the bowels of Newgate prison on a trail that might lead her straight into the arms of the killer. In her debut novel Murder at Rosamund's Gate, Susanna Calkins seamlessly blends historical detail, romance, and mystery in a moving and highly entertaining tale.

Sara’s story can’t be stereotyped or categorized; it’s not genre based, nope… like humans, her story is diverse, nurtured with humor and horror, and could be called a crime drama of fiction. A psychological thriller, Mystery, or perhaps a Romance laden lovers twist. Sara is not unlike us; she has multiple personalities and can mold and pretend to be the person you think she is. Her story hasn’t been finalized. This book brings the reader current. Her sister Kamryn’s book
