Then he hung on to an odd-looking case and made a mysterious enemy - one whose calling cards were two men with shotguns. Now Eddie is reborn - as a dead man. Known by the single name of Dain, he pumps up his body and his psyche as he follows a trail of sweaty white-collar crime to the steamy Louisiana bayous. Book Synopsis Dead Man's Diary and A Taste for Cognac by : Brett Halliday
Download or read book Dead Man's Diary and A Taste for Cognac written by Brett Halliday and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A double shot of iconic Miami PI Mike Shayne—“one of the best of the tough sleuths” (The New York Times). Dead Man’s Diary: Florida private investigator Mike Shayne’s in New Orleans at the behest of a distraught wife whose war-hero husband, Jasper Groat, has gone missing—along with his diary, a harrowing soon-to-be-published daily account of being set adrift in a lifeboat with two shipmates. Rumor has it it’s also an incriminating confessional. With two corpses—and counting—it looks to Shayne like someone would prefer if Jasper and his damning revelations had been buried at sea. A Taste for Cognac: One minute, PI Mike Shayne’s having a quick afternoon cocktail in a Miami dive. The next, he’s been solicited to investigate an intoxicating conspiracy involving the parole of an aging bootlegger, a secretive old sea captain tortured to death, a missing female reporter, and two dozen bottles of prewar cognac—vintage, valuable, and apparently worth killing for. If anybody can pop the cork on this case, it’s Shayne. Brett Halliday’s “fast‐paced world of violence, intrigues, complex twists and voluptuous women” inspired film, radio, and television adaptations, as well as the long-running Mike Shayne Mystery Magazine (The New York Times).

Download or read book Dead Man's Curve written by Mark A. Moore and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan Berry, leader of the music duo Jan & Dean from the late 1950s to mid-1960s, was an intense character who experienced more in his first 25 years than many do in a lifetime. As an architect of the West Coast sound, he was one of rock 'n' roll's original rebels--brilliant, charismatic, reckless, and flawed. As a songwriter, music arranger, and record producer for Nevin-Kirshner Associates and Screen Gems-Columbia Music, Berry was one of the pioneering self-produced artists of his era in Hollywood. He lived a dual life, reaching the top of the charts with Jan & Dean while transitioning from college student to medical student, until an automobile accident in 1966 changed his trajectory forever. Suffering from brain damage and partial paralysis, Jan spent the rest of his life trying to come back from Dead Man's Curve. His story is told here in-depth for the first time, based on extensive primary source documentation and supplemented by the stories and memories of Jan's family members, friends, music industry colleagues, and contemporaries. From the birth of rock to the bitter end, Berry's life story is thrilling, humorous, unsettling, and disturbing, yet ultimately uplifting.
Book Synopsis Strange Voices in Narrative Fiction by : Per Krogh Hansen
Download or read book Strange Voices in Narrative Fiction written by Per Krogh Hansen and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its beginnings narratology has incorporated a communicative model of literary narratives, considering these as simulations of natural, oral acts of communication. This approach, however, has had some problems with accounting for the strangeness and anomalies of modern and postmodern narratives. As many skeptics have shown, not even classical realism conforms to the standard set by oral or ‘natural’ storytelling. Thus, an urge to confront narratology with the difficult task of reconsidering a most basic premise in its theoretical and analytical endeavors has, for some time, been undeniable. During the 2000s, Nordic narratologists have been among the most active and insistent critics of the communicative model. They share a marked skepticism towards the idea of using ‘natural’ narratives as a model for understanding and interpreting all kinds of narratives, and for all of them, the distinction of fiction is of vital importance. This anthology presents a collection of new articles that deal with strange narratives, narratives of the strange, or, more generally, with the strangeness of fiction, and even with some strange aspects of narratology.
