Book excerpt: Hoewel Jules Verne vooral bekend staat om zijn serieuze avonturenromans schreef hij ook humoristische boeken waarin hachelijke reizen worden ondernomen. Een bekend voorbeeld is De reis naar de maan in 28 dagen en 12 uren. Hierin worden drie mensen met een enorm kanon afgeschoten zodat ze rond de maan kunnen reizen en weer veilig terug kunnen keren naar de aarde. Verne baseerde het plot op vele berekeningen en het boek vertoont dan ook veel gelijkenissen met het Apollo-ruimteprogramma, dat ruim honderd jaar na Verne’s boek inderdaad mensen in een baan rond de maan afschoot. De lancering vond op dezelfde plek plaats en ook de landingsplek verschilde maar weinig met de plek die Verne had uitgerekend. Eerder werd het verhaal uitgegeven in twee delen: 'Van de aarde naar de maan' (1865) en 'De reis om de maan' (1870). In dit boek zijn de twee delen samengevoegd en is het hele verhaal te lezen. Jules Verne (1828-1905) werd geboren in de Franse havenstad Nantes en had advocaat moeten worden zoals zijn vader, maar hij rende vroeg van huis weg om toneelstukken en artikelen voor tijdschriften te schrijven. Zijn samenwerking met de uitgever Pierre-Jules Hetzel leidde tot de magisch populaire boekenreeks 'Voyages extraordinaires' - fantastische reizen - waarin hij op basis van zorgvuldig onderzoek, onder andere 'Naar het middelpunt der aarde' (1864), 'Twintigduizend mijlen onder zee' (1870) en 'De reis om de wereld in 80 dagen' (1873) schreef. Jules Verne is ten onrechte geclassificeerd als kinderschrijver vanwege de verkorte en vervormde versies van zijn boeken, terwijl hij als auteur in Frankrijk de artistieke avant-garde heeft beïnvloed. Jules Verne is de op één na meest vertaalde auteur ter wereld - gelegen tussen Agatha Christie en William Shakespeare - en wordt vaak de vader van het science fiction-genre genoemd.

Daar is ook net geen einde aan hierdie man se algemene kennis nie. Om sy briewe te lees dwing net soveel respek en bewondering af as om ‘n meester-kunstenaar te aanskou terwyl hy sy kunswerk skilder of beeldhouwerk doen.
