This book was released on 2006 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: LES CRISTAUX LIQUIDES SONT CONNUS POUR LEURS PROPRIETES OPTIQUES ET ELECTRIQUES PARTICULIERES (BIREFRINGENCE ET COMMANDE PAR CHAMP ELECTRIQUE). DE NOS JOURS, ILS SONT LARGEMENT UTILISES DANS LES DISPOSITIFS DE VISUALISATION. CE TRAVAIL CONCERNE L'ETUDE DES PROPRIETES ELECTRIQUES DE CRISTAUX LIQUIDES ANTIFERROELECTRIQUES ADAPTES AU DEVELOPPEMENT D'AFFICHEURS RAPIDES ET TRISTABLES. DEUX COMPOSES D'UNE MEME SERIE PRESENTANT LA SEQUENCE DE PHASES C-S* C A-S* C F I I-S* C F I 2-S* C-S* C -S A-I ONT ETE CARACTERISES A L'AIDE DE TROIS TECHNIQUES DEVELOPPEES AU LABORATOIRE : LA SPECTROSCOPIE DIELECTRIQUE A LARGES GAMMES DE FREQUENCE ET DE TEMPERATURE, LES MESURES DE POLARISATION ET DE BRUIT BASSE FREQUENCE. L'ETUDE DIELECTRIQUE PERMET DE DETECTER LES TRANSITIONS DE PHASES S A-S* C ET S* C -S* C. SANS CHAMP ELECTRIQUE CONTINU, UN MECANISME DE RELAXATION LIE A L'HELICITE DE LA PHASE S* C EST OBSERVE. CE MECANISME EST FORTEMENT MODIFIE PAR L'APPLICATION D'UN CHAMP CONTINU QUI INDUIT LE DEROULEMENT DE CETTE PHASE. DES COMPORTEMENTS DIFFERENTS POUR LES DEUX COMPOSES SONT MIS EN EVIDENCE EN FONCTION DE LA TEMPERATURE ET DE LA TENSION CONTINUE. L'ANALYSE DES SPECTRES DIELECTRIQUES DANS LES PHASES S* C A ET S* C F I MONTRE L'EXISTENCE DE PLUSIEURS MECANISMES DE RELAXATION. LEUR ORIGINE EST DISCUTEE A PARTIR DES MODELES STRUCTURAUX DE CES PHASES CONSIDERANT DES CELLULES DE BASE A DEUX, TROIS ET QUATRE COUCHES. UN BRUIT BASSE FREQUENCE ATTRIBUE A DES FLUCTUATIONS DE LA POLARISATION EST MIS EN EVIDENCE DANS LES PHASES S A, S* C ET S* C. LA CORRELATION AVEC LES PERTES MONTRE QUE LES MESURES DIELECTRIQUES S'EFFECTUENT EN REGIME LINEAIRE ET QUE CE BRUIT EST D'ORIGINE THERMIQUE. UNE ETUDE THEORIQUE DES PROPRIETES DIELECTRIQUES DE LA PHASE S*

Book excerpt: SUITE A L'ANALOGIE ETABLIE ENTRE LES SUPRACONDUCTEURS ET LES CRISTAUX LIQUIDES SMECTIQUES A (DE GENNES, MC MILLAN 1972), LA PHASE SMECTIQUE A TORSION PAR JOINTS DE GRAIN (TGB) DANS LES CRISTAUX LIQUIDES EST PROPOSEE (RENN, LUBENSKY 1988) COMME L'ANALOGUE DE LA PHASE A RESEAUX DE FLUX D'ABRIKOSOV DANS LES SUPRACONDUCTEURS DE TYPE II. LES PREMIERES PHASES TGB#A ET TGB#C SONT DECOUVERTES RESPECTIVEMENT EN 1989 (J. GOODBY) ET EN 1992 (H.T. NGUYEN). DANS CE MEMOIRE, NOUS ETUDIONS DANS UN PREMIER TEMPS LES PROPRIETES ELECTRIQUES DE PHASES TGB. LES TRAVAUX ONT PERMIS DE VALIDER LA NATURE HELIELECTRIQUE DE LA STRUCTURE TGB#C. L'ETUDE PAR DIFFRACTION X D'UN TGB#C SOUMIS A UN CHAMP ELECTRIQUE TRANSVERSE A PERMIS D'OBSERVER LES CHANGEMENTS STRUCTURAUX INDUITS : DEPLACEMENT DES JOINTS DE GRAIN (FREQUENCE DE COUPURE 10##3 HZ) ET FAIBLE ROTATION DES BLOCS SMECTIQUES. A LA TRANSITION TGB#A-TGB#C, UN EFFET ELECTRONIQUE EST INDUIT PAR UN CHAMP TRANSVERSE STATIQUE. LA MODELISATION DES INTERACTIONS AVEC LE CHAMP EXTERNE A PERMIS D'INTERPRETER LES OBSERVATIONS EXPERIMENTALES. DANS UNE DEUXIEME PARTIE, LA COMMENSURABILITE DE LA STRUCTURE (OU SYMETRIE QUASI-CRISTALLINE) EST ETUDIEE EN GEOMETRIE CONFINEE : L'INCOMMENSURABILITE OBSERVEE AUX FAIBLES EPAISSEURS LAISSE PLACE A UNE STRUCTURE COMMENSURABLE QUAND L'EPAISSEUR AUGMENTE.

Book excerpt: The molecular mechanisms underlying the fact that a crystal can take a variety of external forms is something we have come to understand only in the last few decades. This is due to recent developments in theoretical and experimental investigations of crystal growth mechanisms. Morphology of Crystals is divided into three separately available volumes. Part A contains chapters on roughening transition; equilibrium form; step pattern theory; modern PBC; and surface microtopography. This part provides essentially theoretical treatments of the problem, particularly the solid-liquid interface. Part B contains chapters on ultra-fine particles; minerals; transition from polyhedral to dendrite; theory of dendrite; and snow crystals. All chapters are written by world leaders in their respective areas, and some can be seen as representing the essence of a life's work. This is the first English-language work which covers all aspects of the morphology of crystals - a topic which has attracted top scientific minds for centuries. As such, it is indispensable for anyone seeking an answer to a question relating to this fascinating problem: mineralogists, petrologists, crystallographers, materials scientists, workers in solid-state physics and chemistry, etc. In Parts A: Fundamentals and B: Fine Particles, Minerals and Snow equilibrium and kinetic properties of crystals are generally approached from an `atomistic' point of view. In contrast, Part C: The Geometry of Crystal Growth follows the alternative and complementary `geometrical' description, where bulk phases are considered as continuous media and their interfaces as mathematical surfaces with orientation-dependent properties. Equations of motion for a crystal surface are expressed in terms of vector and tensor operators working on surface free energy and growth rate, both expressed as functions of surface orientation and driving force, or `affinity' for growth. This approach emphasizes the interrelation between equilibrium and kinetic behavior. Part 1 establishes the theoretical framework. Part 2 gives a construction toolbox for explicit (analytic) functions. An extra chapter is devoted to experimental techniques for measuring such functions: a new approach to sphere growth experiments. The emphasis throughout is on principles and new concepts. Audience: Advanced readers familiar with traditional aspects of crystal growth theory. Can be used as the basis for an advanced course, provided supplementation is provided in the areas of atomistic models of the advancing surface, diffusion fields, etc.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often said that there is no "philosophy of science", but only the philosophies of certain scientists. But in so far as we recognize an authoritative body of opinion which decides what is and what is not accepted as present-day physics, there is an ascertainable present-day philosophy of physical science. It is the philosophy to which those who follow the accepted practice of science stand committed by their practice. This book contains the substance of the course of lectures which the author Eddington delivered as Tarner Lecturer of Trinity College Cambridge in the Easter Term 1938. The lectures have afforded him an opportunity of developing more fully than in his earlier books the principles of philosophic thought associated with the modern advances of physical science.
