Book Synopsis La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? by : François Beets
Download or read book La science et le monde moderne d'Alfred North Whitehead? written by François Beets and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second international Chromatiques whiteheadiennes conference was devoted exclusively to the exegesis and contextualization of Whitehead's Science and the Modern World (1925). In order to elucidate the meaning and significance of this epoch-making work, the Proceedings are designed to form "companion" volume. With one paper devoted to each of its thirteen chapters, the Proceedings aim, on the one hand, to identify the specific contribution of each chapter to Whitehead's own research program - that is to say, to put its categories into perspective by means of an internal analysis- and, on the other hand, to identify its global impact in the history of ideas.
Book Synopsis Visions of the Social by : Jean Terrier
Download or read book Visions of the Social written by Jean Terrier and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-06-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essentially contested notion, society is viewed by some as the most important level of human reality, while others deny its existence outright. Taking the example of France between the Enlightenment and the Second World War, this book recounts the debates among thinkers and scholars on the nature of the social. By way of an original analysis of the work of many key figures in the history of French thought, the author convincingly demonstrates the strength of the connection between social theories and political projects. He pays particular attention to conceptual and terminological developments, thereby shedding a new light on the history of some core concepts of the human sciences, such as "society", "culture", and "civilisation".
Book Synopsis Mission & Science by : Carine Dujardin
Download or read book Mission & Science written by Carine Dujardin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-26 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science as an instrument to justify religious missions in secular society The relationship between religion and science is complex and continues to be a topical issue. However, it is seldom zoomed in on from both Protestant andCatholic perspectives. By doing so the contributing authors in this collection gain new insights into the origin and development of missiology. Missiology is described in this book as a “project of modernity,” a contemporary form of apologetics. “Scientific apologetics” was the way to justify missions in a society that was rapidly becoming secularized. Mission & Sciencedeals with the interaction between new scientific disciplines (historiography, geography, ethnology, anthropology, linguistics) and new scientific insights (Darwin’s evolutionary theory, heliocentrism), as well as the role of the papacy and what inspired missionary practice (first in China and the Far East and later in Africa). The renewed missiology has in turn influenced the missionary practice of the twentieth century, guided by apostolic policy. Some “missionary scholars” have even had a significant influence on the scientific discourse of their time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SCIENCE AND EMPIRES: FROM THE INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM TO THE BOOK Patrick PETITJEAN, Catherine JAMI and Anne Marie MOULIN The International Colloquium "Science and Empires - Historical Studies about Scientific De velopment and European Expansion" is the product of an International Colloquium, "Sciences and Empires - A Comparative History of Scien tific Exchanges: European Expansion and Scientific Development in Asian, African, American and Oceanian Countries". Organized by the REHSEIS group (Research on Epistemology and History of Exact Sciences and Scientific Institutions) of CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the colloquium was held from 3 to 6 April 1990 in the UNESCO building in Paris. This colloquium was an idea of Professor Roshdi Rashed who initiated this field of studies in France some years ago, and proposed "Sciences and Empires" as one of the main research programmes for the The project to organize such a colloquium was a bit REHSEIS group. of a gamble. Its subject, reflected in the title "Sciences and Empires", is not a currently-accepted sub-discipline of the history of science; rather, it refers to a set of questions which found autonomy only recently. The terminology was strongly debated by the participants and, as is frequently suggested in this book, awaits fuller clarification.

This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book RST 12 written by Académie des sciences, and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Les sciences humaines dans le centre de l’art written by CORDONNIER Sarah and published by Lavoisier. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis A Philosophical Anthropology Drawn from Simone Weil's Life and Writings by : Helen E. Cullen
Download or read book A Philosophical Anthropology Drawn from Simone Weil's Life and Writings written by Helen E. Cullen and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Philosophical Anthropology Drawn from Simone Weil’s Life & Writings situates Weil’s thought in the time between the two world wars through which she lived, and traces Weil’s consistent conception of a mind-body dualism in the Cartesian sense to a dualism that places the mind within a carnal part of the soul and establishes an eternal part of the soul as the essence of human beings. Helen Cullen argues that in Weil’s early conception of human nature, her Cartesian conception of perception already shows a glimpse of the eternal. Weil’s dualistic conception also forms the basis of her political analysis of the left of her time, and through working in factories and in the fields, she develops a conception of labour as a theory of “action” and “work with a method.” Weil was influenced by leading thinkers of her time, prompting her to do an analysis of current scientific theories. Cullen argues that Weil’s analysis of Christianity, already present in Greek philosophy, shows us a theory of “identical thought” inherited from the East (India and China) and brought forth by peoples around Israel. This theory leads to Weil’s analysis, developed in The Need for Roots, of how we’ve been uprooted through colonization and how we can grow roots in a free local society (both rural and urban).
