The Introduction to this edition of the Latin text, gives background information on the Rome of Caesar's time, on Caesar himself and on the composition and relaibility of his commentaries, on Gaul, and on the Roman Army. Useful Notes on the text, Index of names, and a Vocabulary are all included. This book is very well put together. Book excerpt: "Imagine a book about an unnecessary war written by the ruthless general of an occupying army - a vivid and dramatic propaganda piece that forces the reader to identify with the conquerors and that is designed, like the war itself, to fuel the limitless political ambitions of the author. Could such a campaign autobiography ever be a great work of literature - perhaps even one of the greatest? It would be easy to think not, but such a book exists -and it helped transform Julius Caesar from a politician on the make into the Caesar of legend. This remarkable new translation of Caesar's famous but underappreciated War for Gaul captures, like never before in English, the gripping and powerfully concise style of the future emperor's dispatches from the front lines in what are today France, Belgium, Germany, and Switzerland. While letting Caesar tell his battle stories in his own way, distinguished classicist James O'Donnell also fills in the rest of the story in a substantial introduction and notes that together explain why Gaul is the "best bad man's book ever written"--A great book in which a genuinely bad person offers a bald-faced, amoral description of just how bad he has been. Complete with a chronology, a map of Gaul, suggestions for further reading, and an index, this feature-rich edition captures the forceful austerity of a troubling yet magnificent classic - a book that, as O'Donnell says, 'gets war exactly right and morals exactly wrong.'" -- Front jacket flap

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from C. IVLII Caesaris De Bello Gallico Liber Quintus: Fifth Book of Caesar's Gallic War; With a Syntatical Commentary and Explanatory Notes The Memoirs of Caesar have long been used and will long continue to be used as an introduction to the knowledge of Latin. The purity of style, the absence of affectation, the masculine contempt of mere orna ment, the military exactness of expression, the keen insight into char acter and situation, the effective side-strokes which show that the officer was not lost in the strategist nor the politician in the statesman, all these things commend Caesar's writings to more advanced students, but it is to be feared that the grammatical difficulties of the first books of the Gallic War prevent the majority of beginners from appreciating the merits of the author. No one but an experienced teacher of boys can tell how bewildering oratio obliqua is at first, but more mature scholars may learn to measure the trouble approximately by comparing the divergent resolu tions of audio obliqua in commentaries and grammars. The very first book seems to me miserably hard for a young boy. And my friend Professor maupin, who at my request has estimated the amount of oratio obliqua in that book, tells me that it constitutes no less than forty per cent. Of the whole. The fifth book, on the other hand, is deservedly a favorite with pupils and teachers alike, both for the interest of its themes and the greater ease of its style and it has been thought that a separate edition of my syntactical commentary might find wider usefulness than could be expected for the Latin Reader in which that commentary first appeared. Prepared originally as a drill-book in Latin Syntax, this edition does not require the use of any special grammar, all the syntactical rules involved being stated with as much conciseness as is consistent with clearness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While in exile on St Helena, Napoleon dictated a commentary on the wars of Julius Caesar, later published in 1836. In each chapter he summarized the events of one campaign, then added comments from the standpoint of his own military knowledge. Over the nearly two millennia between Caesar and Napoleon some aspects of warfare had changed, notably the introduction of firearms. But much remained the same: the rate of movement of armies (at the foot pace of horse or man); human muscle power as the main source of energy for construction work; some military techniques, notably bridge construction; as well as the actual territory fought over by Caesar and later by Napoleon. Napoleons commentary thus provides a fascinating and highly authoritative insight into Caesars wars, as well as providing a window into Napoleons own thinking and attitudes. Napoleon in places detects mistakes on the part of Caesar and his enemies, and says what they should have done differently. Remarkably, this is thought to be the first full English translation of Napoleon's work.Napoleon Bonaparte was born to an obscure Corsican family but rose through the ranks of the French army to become Emperor of France, conqueror of most of Europe and acknowledged military genius. He wrote this book while in exile on St Helena. The translator. RA Maguire, is a former civil engineer with a long-standing interest in military and ancient history.

Book excerpt: The Gallic War, published on the eve of the civil war which led to the end of the Roman Republic, is an autobiographical account written by one of the most famous figures of European history. On one level a straightforward narrative of the campaigns Caesar fought against the Gauls, Germans and Britons, it also serves a deeper political purpose, revealing him as a commander of breathtaking flair, courage and persistence - a man of the people, a man without rival. This new translation reflects the purity of Caesar's Latin while preserving the pace and flow of his momentous narrative of the conquest of Gaul and the first Roman invasions of Britain and Germany. The introduction includes a survey of Caesar's role and reputation in later thought, while detailed notes, maps, a table of dates, and glossary make this the most useful edition available. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh interpretation of Caesar’s The Gallic War that focuses on Caesar’s construction of national identity and his self-presentation. Anyone who has even a passing acquaintance with Latin knows “Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres” (“All Gaul is divided into three parts”), the opening line of De Bello Gallico, Julius Caesar’s famous commentary on his campaigns against the Gauls in the 50s BC. But what did Caesar intend to accomplish by writing and publishing his commentaries, how did he go about it, and what potentially unforeseen consequences did his writing have? These are the questions that Andrew Riggsby pursues in this fresh interpretation of one of the masterworks of Latin prose. Riggsby uses contemporary literary methods to examine the historical impact that the commentaries had on the Roman reading public. In the first part of his study, Riggsby considers how Caesar defined Roman identity and its relationship to non-Roman others. He shows how Caesar opens up a possible vision of the political future in which the distinction between Roman and non-Roman becomes less important because of their joint submission to a Caesar-like leader. In the second part, Riggsby analyzes Caesar’s political self-fashioning and the potential effects of his writing and publishing The Gallic War. He reveals how Caesar presents himself as a subtly new kind of Roman general who deserves credit not only for his own virtues, but for those of his soldiers as well. Riggsby uses case studies of key topics (spatial representation, ethnography, virtus and technology, genre, and the just war), augmented by more synthetic discussions that bring in evidence from other Roman and Greek texts, to offer a broad picture of the themes of national identity and Caesar’s self-presentation. Winner of the 2006 AAP/PSP Award for Excellence, Classics and Ancient History
