Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leaders or Boards of Directors often believe the culture of their organization is in need of change. Sometimes the organizational culture is in need of change; other times it is not. In todays global marketplace, it is important for leadership to make the right decision. There are proven success steps leaders need to follow to bring about cultural changes in their organizations. This book provides the steps and questions for leaders to address relative to whether their organizations are in need of a change. It asks leaders to consider their leadership style, to look at what other organizations have done, to set goals and timeframes, the organizations vision and mission statements all before making a final decision about whether there is a need for changing the culture. The importance of effective communications can make the difference in whether an organization succeeds in changing. Too often leaders believe providing information about how an organization is changing is the same as communicating how and why an organization is changing. Nothing is further from reality. Followers need to understand how organizational changes will affect them personally. Because many followers are not comfortable with change, conflicts often arise. This book discusses how organizational leaders can foresee and prevent some conflicts from happening and how to deal with the conflicts that do arise. Lastly, the book outlines the steps leaders need to follow to ensure a successful change in their organizations. Too often leaders do not outline a plan of action the leads to a successful change. Without a plan of action, leaders often dont stay the course, ensuring failure of the organization.

Book excerpt: Jena Parker is determined to find the answers that will help her put her horrible past behind her, but what she discovers may take her further into the darkness. She’s become an unstoppable force, and those who are smart will stay out of her way. Jena was once a young, innocent girl whose only dreams were to live a simple teenager’s life, go to college, and share her love with her best friend, Jake Paterson. Fate, however, had other plans for her. Now she’s caught up in a world wind of turmoil, trying to find her way back to the girl she once knew—but that girl may be lost forever. In just a short time, her life has changed. Her father has been murdered, and her mother is dead as well. The revenge she sought in finding and killing Mr. McNeil—the man she blames for unleashing her dark side—is not enough to stop the rage that boils within. What’s more, there’s a secret from her past of which she remains unaware. Mystery still surrounds the event that robbed her of her innocence, and she must discover who did it and make them pay. The past collides with the present, and lies circle around them both as Jena finds herself once again deep in love, betrayed, and force to commit murder. Only time will tell whether Jena will find redemption, or whether her destiny has been sealed by the cold rage that lives deep within her.

Book excerpt: If twenty-five years can discover the internet, the cell phone, this thing called the iPod, can twenty-five years discover the secret of a girl murdered, abandoned, by the side of the road? That is the haunting premise of Bury This, an impressionistic literary thriller about the murder of a young girl in small-town Michigan in 1979. Beth Krause was by all intents a good little girl – member of the church choir, beloved daughter of doting parents, friend to the downtrodden. But dig a little deeper into any small town, and conflicts and jealousies begin to appear. And somewhere is that heady mix lies the answer to what really happened to Beth Krause. Her unsolved murder becomes the stuff of town legend, and twenty-five years later the case is re-ignited when a group of film students start making a documentary on Beth’s fateful life. The town has never fully healed over the loss of Beth, and the new investigation calls into light several key characters: her father, a WWII vet; her mother, once the toast of Manhattan; her best friend, abandoned by her mother and left to fend for herself against an abusive father; and the detective, just a rookie when the case broke, haunted by his inability to bring Beth’s murderer to justice. All of these passions will collide once the identity of Beth’s murderer is revealed, proving once again that some secrets can never stay buried.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, Howard Jay Graham, a deaf law librarian, successfully argued that the authors of the Fourteenth Amendment--ratified after the American Civil War to establish equal protection under the law for all American citizens regardless of race--were motivated by abolitionist fervor, debunking the notion of a corporate conspiracy at the heart of the amendment's wording. For over half a century, the amendment had been used to endow corporations with rights as individuals and thus protect them from state legislation. By 1968, when Everyman's Constitution was first published, the Fourteenth Amendment had become a tool for the incorporation of the Bill of Rights to apply to all American citizens. The essays in this reprinted edition are still relevant as the nation continues to interpret our framing legislation in light of the concerns of today and to balance citizens' rights against those of corporations. Howard Jay Graham was a law librarian brought in by the NAACP's legal team to write a brief on the Fourteenth Amendment for the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education. Though the Supreme Court justices ruled in favor of the NAACP based on the sociological rather than historical evidence it provided, Graham's work, published in various law journals over several decades, contributed greatly to the ongoing interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a manager, you have the opportunity to inspire those under your purview to the point where they feel privileged to have you as their leader. It may be a lot of work to get there, but it can be done. In Managing through the Entrepreneurial Fog, author Tim Koprowski Sr. addresses the necessary steps for successfully managing people toward a common goal. It begins by delving into the world of management by presenting a new philosophy called “Play by the Rules.” Sharing anecdotes that give the rationale behind its foundation, Koprowski describes a unique and complete approach to managing people based on twenty-three key concepts. He then discusses how this philosophy was used to strengthen the foundation on which a start-up company was built. He traces the story of a software company for the healthcare industry that began with virtually nothing and later became a formidable force for well-established companies to contend with. Providing candid accounts of the various challenges the business faced, Koprowski explains how the concepts from “Play by the Rules” played an integral role in examining the company’s failures and turning them into successes. A practical tutorial for potential, current, and new managers, Managing through the Entrepreneurial Fog illustrates the application of an effective management philosophy put into practice in the workplace.
