Book excerpt: Through poetry and story, Daydreams and Night Visions moves us through Charles Henley's transformational journey from a boy hopelessly addicted to drugs, alcohol, and the strife that accompanies addiction, to a man full of hope, love, and joy. In this book of rhymes and wisdom, we get a glimpse of an emotional state of mind we might not otherwise understand. We get a first-hand view of the conversion from and remorse for a life of sin to the daydreams and night visions that Henley experienced during and after his conversion. These visions made him acutely aware of the struggle between good and evil as demonic forces battled for the possession of his soul. This awareness helped him not only prepare for the battle but claim victory over it. This poetic look at a life of a sinner once saved is a look at faith and hope at the end of the road of despair. It's not only written for those who suffer from similar addictions, it's also written to give hope and advice to friends and relatives who feel helpless as they watch their loved ones losing the battle for their souls—if only for a season.

Book excerpt: When silent film icon Rudolph Valentino penned this book of poetry in 1923, he was waging a 'one man strike' against his studio demanding higher quality production standards for his films. While he struggled to find a solution to this employment impasse, he delved into the occult and spiritualism and wrote his Daydreams poems. Shortly after Valentino's sudden death in 1926, his ex-wife, Natacha Rambova claimed her husband was adept at receiving messages from the other side via automatic writing. She also alleged that Valentino did not write the Daydreams poems, but instead transcribed them while in a trance, channeling them from his own spirit guides and noted, deceased poets. Although these poems appear online and in other publications, they are still protected by the copyright protection of the Valentino family. In 2002, the Valentino family granted Evelyn Zumaya contractual permission to reissue the poems, in any edition of this publication and she has reasserted their copyright protection in this second edition. The mystery of the true authorship of Valentino's fascinating psychic poems remains unsolved and continues to be the subject of discussion for Valentino's many ardent admirers.

We spend a third of our lives asleep, and throughout history our nocturnal visions have engaged the interpretive talents of our greatest writers. This treasury of poets–Sidney, Donne, Blake, Keats, Wordsworth, Whitman, Rilke, Plath, Graves, Roethke, Bishop, Moore, Updike, and many more–encompasses lullabies, invocations, aubades, songs, epigrams, and stories, in every conceivable mood from the broadly comic to the tragic. It includes poems about daydreams and nightmares, about falling asleep and about waking up, about insomnia, night thoughts, monsters of the dark, twilight, dawn, and the rebirth of morning. From Auden’s “Lullaby” to Rossetti’s “Nuptial Sleep,” from Salvatore Quasimodo’s “Insomnia” to Thom Gunn’s “Annihilation of Nothing,”Poems of Sleep and Dreamsevokes the whole haunting, magical spectrum of sleep and dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An example of Poe’s melancholic and morbid poetic pieces, "A Dream Within a Dream" is a poem that pitifully mourns the passing of time. The poet’s own life, teeming with depression, alcoholism, and misery, cannot but exemplify the subject matter and tone of the poem. The constant dilution of reality and fantasy is detrimental to the poetic speaker’s ability to hold reality in his hands. The quiet contemplation of the speaker is contrasted with thunderous passing of time that waits for no man. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was an American poet, author, and literary critic. Most famous for his poetry, short stories, and tales of the supernatural, mysterious, and macabre, he is also regarded as the inventor of the detective genre and a contributor to the emergence of science fiction, dark romanticism, and weird fiction. His most famous works include "The Raven" (1945), "The Black Cat" (1943), and "The Gold-Bug" (1843).

Book excerpt: Dominique Renda and Blake Horsleys Midnight Daydreams invites the reader on a journey through breathtaking and heartfelt landscapes of lives both recognizable and unforeseen. The authors candid poetic portraits offer compelling characters, and represent a deep slice of life, crystallizing moments, realizations, and dreams lost and found. Witty, heartbreaking, and inspiring, these poems affirm our humanity and rouse our spirit. Tales of a mothers feelings for her children, undying and impossible to suppress, a sons independent voice, a spry womans inquisitive perspective on time, an exhausted mans effort to reclaim it, veterans of war and adjustments, explorations of values and redemption, and the insight and passion of a creative life. Dominique Renda and Blake Horsley engage the reader in a conscious exploration of characters and poetic stories that bring us home. Transportive poetry. A moving collection. Truth and wonder artistically expressed in each characters authentic voice. Neal Menschel, Poet, Photojournalist A certain shared perspective. Is this commonality based in blood, in experience, in poetic sensibility? I find pondering these links and shadows enrich the overall effect of the work: each poem revealing both something about the subject as an individual and often as a part of a family, unique, yet related. Book excerpt: Daydreams, is a collection of poems written over the past three years. These poems speak of the many dimensions of life, from love to pain, to racism. They explore life from a different prospective, allowing one to see life through someone else's eyes. I was inspired to be the voice of my generation and to express how many of my peers feel about their lives and the world around them. These poems tell the stories of my generation, my city, and my ancestry. Despite all the many obstacles we experience in life, one must never forget to dream. For dreams are the beginnings of movements and revolutions. With a vision anything is possible. So, what's in your dreams?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corballis argues that mind-wandering has many constructive and adaptive features. These range from mental time travel?the wandering back and forth through time, not only to plan our futures based on past experience, but also to generate a continuous sense of who we are--to the ability to inhabit the minds of others, increasing empathy and social understanding. Through mind-wandering, we invent, tell stories, and expand our mental horizons. Mind wandering , hardly the sign of a faulty network or aimless distraction, actually underwrites creativity, whether as a Wordsworth wandering lonely as a cloud, or an Einstein imagining himself travelling on a beam of light. Corballis takes readers on a mental journey in chapters that can be savored piecemeal, as the minds of readers wander in different ways, and sometimes have limited attentional capacity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each and every day teachers show up in their classrooms with a relentless sense of optimism. Despite the complicated challenges of schools, they come to and remain in the profession inspired by a conviction that through education they can move individuals and society to a more promising future. In Teaching with Heart: Poetry that Speaks to the Courage to Teach a diverse group of ninety teachers describe the complex of emotions and experiences of the teaching life – joy, outrage, heartbreak, hope, commitment and dedication. Each heartfelt commentary is paired with a cherished poem selected by the teacher. The contributors represent a broad array of educators: K-12 teachers, principals, superintendents, college professors, as well as many non-traditional teachers. They range from first year teachers to mid-career veterans to those who have retired after decades in the classroom. They come from inner-city, suburban, charter and private schools. The teachers identified an eclectic collection of poems and poets from Emily Dickinson, to Richard Wright, to Mary Oliver to the rapper Tupac Shakur. It is a book by teachers and for all who teach. The book also includes a poignant Foreword by Parker J. Palmer (The Courage to Teach), a stirring Introduction by Taylor Mali (What Teachers Make), and a moving Afterword by Sarah Brown Wessling (Teaching Channel). Where Teaching with Fire honored and celebrated the work of teachers; Teaching with Heart salutes the tenacious and relentless optimism of teachers and their belief that despite the many challenges and obstacles of the teaching life, much is possible.
