Book excerpt: What do I do when my son or daughter appears to be hallucinating, paranoid or has stopped looking after themselves? Written for family members and friends of those who suffer from schizophrenia and other psychoses, Back to Life, Back to Normality 2 describes the typical symptoms and problems of those suffering from psychotic disorders and discusses how a relative can best listen, interact and communicate their support. Research conducted by authors Douglas Turkington and Helen Spencer has shown that individuals without psychiatric training and qualifications can easily learn and safely use some basic cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) techniques to help communicate effectively and provide support to their loved one suffering from psychosis. These techniques are described and illustrated with examples throughout this book, to allow carers to learn how to provide the best possible support and help facilitate a recovery for those suffering.

Book excerpt: Combining personal anecdotes with the latest scientific research, this searingly honest memoir sheds new light on the darkness of depression Millions people suffer from major depressive episodes. All of them want relief but, more importantly, most simply want to know that they are not alone. With gentle wry humor and a compassionate tone, David's Inferno offers a tale of realization, acceptance, and hope. It is neither prescriptive nor opinionated, seeing all forms of therapy as potentially beneficial in the continuum of care. Combining intensely personal reminiscences of a two-year nervous breakdown with contemporary insights on how manic-depression manifests and how it is diagnosed and treated; David Blistein shares his experiences to shed light on the darkness of depression for fellow travelers as well as those who care about them. David's Inferno serves as an ideal book for friends and family of those suffering from depression, helping them to better understand what their loved ones are experiencing. “Blistein takes us into the heart of his Inferno and combs through clinical and scientific literature to create a vivid, unforgettable image of this very personal form of hell.” —Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of living and working with schizophrenia is often fraught with challenges and setbacks. This book is a comprehensive attempt to explain why, in spite of near-miraculous advances in medication and treatment, persons with mental illness fare worse than almost any other disadvantaged group in the labor market. As a researcher of economics and disability and the mother of a son with schizophrenia, the author speaks from both professional and personal experience. First, she looks at societal factors that affect employment outcomes for persons with schizophrenia (or other serious mental illness), including stigma and discrimination, investments in human capital, the quality of mental health services, and the support of family and friends. Then she examines workplace factors that affect employment outcomes, including employer mandates in the Americans with Disabilities Act, the decision to disclose a diagnosis of mental illness at work, the interaction between job demands and functional limitations, and job accommodations for persons with a serious mental illness. Giving weight to both perspectives, the final chapter outlines a set of policy recommendations designed to improve employment outcomes for this population.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The causes of schizophrenia are many, including extreme stress, chemical imbalance, reaction to drugs, genetic predisposition, isolation, low self-esteem, and even a damaged or weakened aura (a supposed emanation surrounding the body of a living creature viewed by mystics, spiritualists, and some practitioners of complementary medicine as the essence of the individual and allegedly discernible by people with special sensibilities). My personal onset of schizophrenia and depression at age forty-two was caused, I believe, by a combination of the above. Through the caring help of family, friends, medical doctors, healers, and my own insights and intuitions, I was able to become completely free of the symptoms of schizophrenia and all antipsychotic and antidepressant medications used to treat the illness. Most influential and important to my healing and recovery, however, was the utilization of both borrowed and original strategies that keep me healthy to this day. The sharing of these strategies, which include identifying one's gifts; relying on family members, friends, and caregivers; improving one's self-esteem; identifying one's authentic self; connecting with healers; being in gratitude; setting goals; and using positive affirmations for the purpose of recovering and maintaining positive mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health is the reason why I have written this book.

Book excerpt: ‘Highly eloquent, fascinating and deeply compassionate’ Henry Marsh, author of Do No Harm We cannot know how to fix a problem until we understand its causes. But even for some of the most common mental health problems, specialists argue over whether the answers lie in the person’s biology, their psychology or their circumstances. As a cognitive neuropsychiatrist, Anthony David brings together many fields of enquiry, from social and cognitive psychology to neurology. The key for each patient might be anything from a traumatic memory to a chemical imbalance, an unhealthy way of thinking or a hidden tumour. Patrick believes he is dead. Jennifer's schizophrenia medication helped with her voices but did it cause Parkinson’s? Emma is in a coma – or is she just refusing to respond? Drawing from Professor David’s career as a clinician and academic, these fascinating case studies reveal the unique complexity of the human mind, stretching the limits of our understanding.

Book excerpt: As a Black British man I believe it is vital that I tell this story. It may be just one account from the perspective of a person of colour who has experienced this system, but it may be enough to potentially change an opinion or, more importantly, stop someone else from spinning completely out of control.' – David Harewood Is it possible to be Black and British and feel welcome and whole? In this powerful and provocative account of a life lived after psychosis, critically acclaimed actor, David Harewood, uncovers devastating family history and investigates the very real impact of racism on Black mental health. When David Harewood was twenty-three, his acting career beginning to take flight, he had what he now understands to be a psychotic breakdown and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. He was physically restrained by six police officers, sedated, then hospitalized and transferred to a locked ward. Only now, thirty years later, has he been able to process what he went through. What was it that caused this breakdown and how did David recover to become a successful and critically acclaimed actor? How did his experiences growing up Black and British contribute to a rupture in his sense of his place in the world? Maybe I Don't Belong Here is a deeply personal exploration of the duality of growing up both Black and British, recovery from crisis and a rallying cry to examine the systems and biases that continue to shape our society.

This book was released on 2007-10-03 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his second semester at college, Kurt Snyder became convinced that he was about to discover a fabulously important mathematical principle, spending hours lost in daydreams about numbers and symbols. In time, his thoughts took a darker turn, and he became preoccupied with the idea that cars were following him, or that strangers wanted to harm him. Kurt's mind had been hijacked by schizophrenia, a severe mental disorder that typically strikes during the late teen or young adult years. In Me, Myself, and Them, Kurt, now an adult, looks back from the vantage point of recovery and eloquently describes the debilitating changes in thoughts and perceptions that took hold of his life during his teens and twenties. As a memoir, this book is remarkable for its unvarnished look at the slow and difficult process of coming back from severe mental illness. Yet Kurt's memoir is only half the story. With the help of psychiatrist Raquel E. Gur, M.D., Ph.D., and veteran science writer Linda Wasmer Andrews, Kurt paints the big picture for others affected by adolescent schizophrenia. Drawing on the latest scientific and medical evidence, he explains how to recognize warning signs, where to find help, and what treatments have proved effective. Kurt also offers practical advice on topics of particular interest to young people, such as suggestions on managing the illness at home, school, and work, and in relationships with family and friends. Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, My, Myself, and Them offers hope to young people who are struggling with schizophrenia, helping them to understand and manage the challenges of this illness and go on to lead healthy lives.
