Esq.; Delivered in the Senate Chamber of the State Capitol at Raleigh, March 12, 1909, Upon the Presentation of the Portrait of David Paton to the State, and Its Acceptance by Governor W. W. Kitchin At the instance of Mrs. C. E. Foy, of New Bern, and her children, and of Mrs. E. M. Shute, of New York, I beg to pre sent to the State the portrait of Mr. David Paton, the honored father of Mrs. Foy and of Mrs. Shute, and the architect of this building. As designer and architect, the talents of Mr. Paton found expression in this superb edifice, which, indeed, is an enduring monument to his skill and capacity, bearing ample testimony to his superior attainments and high accomplishments in his profession. Book excerpt: The North Carolina State Capitol is among the most architecturally sophisticated American buildings constructed in the first half of the nineteenth century. As completed, this Greek Revival building was of a scale and refinement previously unknown in the state. The Commissioners charged with the design of the new Capitol had grand visions for the new structure. They determined to construct a monument that "will vie with the finest specimens of European architecture" and designed it "with the principles of Architecture...and rules of Architectural taste." The Capitol's design is primarily the work of three architects: William Nichols, Alexander Jackson Davis and David Paton. While each architect significantly contributed to the completed building, architectural historians agree that the design is primarily the work of Alexander Jackson Davis, then with the firm of Town and Davis. Each succeeding architect, however, effected a higher degree of architectural refinement and detail, a situation which rarely occurs in the design and construction of major civic monuments. As completed, the building exceeded expectations. The opening of the new Capitol coincided with the completion of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad and was met with great celebration. The Capitol has consistently been praised by visitors to Raleigh since its completion. The late Jane Davies was the principal biographer of Alexander Jackson Davis. She has stated that the Capitol at Raleigh and New York City's Customs House are Davis's masterworks. More recently an officer of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art toured the building and noted that no building of this architectural sophistication existed in Washington, D.C., at its completion in 1840. The majestic North Carolina State Capitol stands today as intended: "one of the finest specimens extant of classic taste in America." The North Carolina State Capitol Foundation invites you to explore the scholarship of John Sanders and the artistry of photographer and North Carolina native John Hall in celebration of this impressive National Landmark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This award-winning, lavishly illustrated history displays the wide range of North Carolina's architectural heritage, from colonial times to the beginning of World War II. North Carolina Architecture addresses the state's grand public and private buildings that have become familiar landmarks, but it also focuses on the quieter beauty of more common structures: farmhouses, barns, urban dwellings, log houses, mills, factories, and churches. These buildings, like the people who created them and who have used them, are central to the character of North Carolina. Now in a convenient new format, this portable edition of North Carolina Architecture retains all of the text of the original edition as well as hundreds of halftones by master photographer Tim Buchman. Catherine Bishir's narrative analyzes construction and design techniques and locates the structures in their cultural, political, and historical contexts. This extraordinary history of North Carolina's built world presents a unique and valuable portrait of the state.

Book excerpt: Scorched Earth is the first book to chronicle the effects of chemical warfare on the Vietnamese people and their environment, where, even today, more than 3 million people—including 500,000 children—are sick and dying from birth defects, cancer, and other illnesses that can be directly traced to Agent Orange/dioxin exposure. Weaving first-person accounts with original research, Vietnam War scholar Fred A. Wilcox examines long-term consequences for future generations, laying bare the ongoing monumental tragedy in Vietnam, and calls for the United States government to finally admit its role in chemical warfare in Vietnam. Wilcox also warns readers that unless we stop poisoning our air, food, and water supplies, the cancer epidemic in the United States and other countries will only worsen, and he urgently demands the chemical manufacturers of Agent Orange to compensate the victims of their greed and to stop using the Earth’s rivers, lakes, and oceans as toxic waste dumps. Vietnam has chosen August 10—the day that the US began spraying Agent Orange on Vietnam—as Agent Orange Day, to commemorate all its citizens who were affected by the deadly chemical. Scorched Earth will be released upon the third anniversary of this day, in honor of all those whose families have suffered, and continue to suffer, from this tragedy.
