Book excerpt: This important and timely book delivers a startling analysis of the clash of faith and reason in today's world. Sam Harris offers a vivid historical tour of mankind's willingness to suspend reason in favour of religious beliefs, even when those beliefs are used to justify harmful behaviour and sometimes heinous crimes. He asserts that in the shadow of weapons of mass destruction, we can no longer tolerate views that pit one true god against another. religion -- an accommodation that only blinds us to the real perils of fundamentalism. While warning against the encroachment of organised religion into world politics, Harris also draws on new evidence from neuroscience and insights from philosophy to explore spirituality as a biological, brain-based need. He calls on us to invoke that need in taking a secular humanistic approach to solving the problems of this world.

Book excerpt: Water budgets—volumetric allotments of water to customers based on customer-specific characteristics and conservative resource standards—are an innovative means of improving water use efficiency. Once thought to be impractical because of technological constraints, water budgets linked with an increasing block rate structure have been implemented successfully in more than 20 utilities. As utilities develop advanced customer information systems and geographical information systems, these rate structures are expected to be applied more broadly. Water budget rate structures are attractive to water agencies searching for stable revenue generation, improved customer acceptance, increased water use efficiency, augmented affordability of nondiscretionary customer water consumption, and improved drought response. The objectives of this study were to examine water budgets and their potential value to North American water utilities and the varying applications of the water budget concept that have been adapted to different conditions. Key research issues included different practical approaches to water budget rate structures, the benefits and challenges of these approaches, the potential uses of water budgets during drought, and important steps in the water budget implementation process. An extensive literature review was conducted using bibliographic and web-based searches. The researchers conducted numerous structured interviews with water agencies that have already implemented water budgets and water agencies interested in the concept, but not yet using water budgets. This research focused on the technical ability and readiness of the agency as well as the potential barriers to implementation. Agencies also provided annual reports, consumption data, information on customer classes, and information on customer billing systems. Case studies on implemented water budget programs were developed by the research team and reviewed by agency personnel to ensure accuracy. Case studies were chosen to be illustrative of the successes and challenges involved in implementing a water budget rate structure.

Book excerpt: "The End of Faith articulates the dangers and absurdities of organized religion so fiercely and so fearlessly that I felt relieved as I read it, vindicated....Harris writes what a sizable number of us think, but few are willing to say."—Natalie Angier, New York Times In The End of Faith, Sam Harris delivers a startling analysis of the clash between reason and religion in the modern world. He offers a vivid, historical tour of our willingness to suspend reason in favor of religious beliefs—even when these beliefs inspire the worst human atrocities. While warning against the encroachment of organized religion into world politics, Harris draws on insights from neuroscience, philosophy, and Eastern mysticism to deliver a call for a truly modern foundation for ethics and spirituality that is both secular and humanistic. Winner of the 2005 PEN/Martha Albrand Award for Nonfiction.

Book excerpt: A unique overview of the whole 350-year history of South Africa’s racial order, from the mid-seventeenth century to the apartheid era. Maylam periodizes this racial order, drawing out its main phases and highlighting the significant turning points. He also analyzes the dynamics of South African white racism, exploring the key forces and factors that brought about and perpetuated oppressive, discriminatory policies, practices, structures, laws and attitudes. There is also a strong historiographical dimension to the study. It shows how various writers have, from different perspectives, attempted to explain the South African racial order and draws out the political and ideological agendas that lay beneath these diverse interpretations. Essential reading for all those interested in the past, present and future of South Africa, this book also has implications for the wider study of race, racism and social and political ethnic relations.

Book excerpt: God created a game - it's called The Game of Life. Planet Earth is the playing field, the 10 love commandments are the rules, and we humans are the players who can win or lose. The game is played by two teams, like the game of football. One team's head coach is Jesus and the other team's head coach is Satan. All of us on earth are playing for one of these two teams! Gabriel Ansley Erb wrote the book "2028 END" in order to fully elucidate God's game clock scenario for The Game of Life as contained in the game's handbook, the Holy Bible. The handbook says, "God declared the end from the beginning" (Isaiah 46:10) by using 7 days in the creation event. Each 24 hour creation day foretold of a future 1,000 year period for a total 7,000 year plan God had for The Game of Life to be played on planet earth. And amazingly, to confirm this is all true, God hid a secret prophesy in each creation day foretelling the greatest event He had planned to occur in that day's future millennium!Consequently, Creation day 1 foretold Adam & Eve's fall, which was fulfilled during earth's 1st millennium. Creation day 2 foretold Noah's global flood, which was fulfilled during earth's 2nd millennium. Creation day 3 foretold Moses' Red Sea parting, which was fulfilled during earth's 3rd millennium. Creation day 4 foretold of John the Baptist & Jesus Christ, and so they lived and died during earth's 4th millennium. And the prophecies continue with each Creation day!Gabriel proves all of the above, carefully revealing the prophetic Scriptures as well as the fulfillment Scriptures. Then he reveals a dozen Scriptures proving Christ died earth's 4,000 year and will return earth's 6,000 year. Finally, he proves Christ died Feast of Passover AD 28 and will return Feast of Trumpets 2028. For those who read this book, it is an open and shut case: The Game of Life will end 2,000 years from the year of Christ's death on the cross - AD 2028.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President George W. Bush is the 'President of Good and Evil' - the man who, more than any other United States president in living memory, talks constantly about ethics, about values, about good and evil. This book is an attempt to hold the policies of George W. Bush, and his actions as president, up to an ethical standard - including his own. But it goes beyond that. It is also a study in a distinctively American ethic, for there are many features of his ethic that are not widely held elsewhere in the developed world. (There are also, of course, many Americans who do not share them.)Some will question whether Bush is sincere in his ethical pronouncements. While Singer highlights some flagrant inconsistencies between what he has said and what he has done, the book is not an exposi of the 'real' Bush beneath the public pronouncements. The President of Good & Evilis Singer's attempt to hold the world's most prominent moralist accountable.
