Book excerpt: David copperfield, in full The Personal History of David Copperfield, novel by English writer Charles Dickens, published serially in 1849-50 and in book form in 1850. David Copperfield has always been among Dickens's most popular novels and was his own "favourite child." The work is semiautobiographical, and, although the title character differs from his creator in many ways, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him--his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and (more cursorily) his emergence from parliamentary reporting into successful novel writing. The story is told in the first person by a middle-aged David Copperfield, who is looking back on his life. David is born in Blunderstone, Suffolk, six months after the death of his father, and he is raised by his mother and her devoted housekeeper, Clara Peggotty. As a young child, he spends a few days with Peggotty at the home of her brother, Mr. Peggotty, in Yarmouth, which Mr. Peggotty shares with Ham and Emily, his orphaned nephew and niece, respectively. When the visit ends, David learns that his mother has married the cruel and controlling Mr. Edward Murdstone. That evening Murdstone's sister also moves in and assumes the management of the household.

Book excerpt: The captivating story of an innocent boy alone in an uncaring society, David Copperfield is unquestionably the most autobiographical of all Charles Dickens's novels. Born in bleak 19th-century London, David Copperfield's life is shaped by his struggle for survival, starting with his menacing stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. His friendship with the blustering, jovial Mr. Micawber adds hilarity and warmth to his otherwise dismal days, while the sinister, sniveling clerk Uriah Heep is an endless source of both amusement and revulsion. As David grows up, he is torn between his fascination with the beautiful, spoiled Dora and his devotion to his childhood friend Agnes. An unforgettable portrayal of childhood, David Copperfield's message of hope and determination amidst life's harsh realities makes this story one of Dickens's greatest masterpieces.

Book excerpt: David Copperfield David Copperfield is the story of a young man's adventures on his journey from an unhappy and impoverished childhood to the discovery of his vocation as a successful novelist. Among the gloriously vivid cast of characters he encounters are his tyrannical stepfather, Mr Murdstone; his brilliant, but ultimately unworthy school-friend James Steerforth; his formidable aunt, Betsey Trotwood; the eternally humble, yet treacherous Uriah Heep; frivolous, enchanting Dora Spenlow; and the magnificently impecunious Wilkins Micawber, one of literature's great comic creations. In David Copperfield - the novel he described as his 'favourite child' - Dickens drew revealingly on his own experiences to create one of the most exuberant and enduringly popular works, filled with tragedy and comedy in equal measure. This edition uses the text of the first volume publication of 1850, and includes updated suggestions for further reading, original illustrations by 'Phiz', a revised chronology and expanded notes. In his new introduction, Jeremy Tambling discusses the novel's autobiographical elements, and its central themes of memory and identity.

Book excerpt: David Copperfield is the eighth novel by Charles Dickens. It was first published as a book in 1850. Many elements of the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of his novels. In the preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens wrote, "like many fond parents, I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield." The story traces the life of David Copperfield from childhood to maturity. David was born in Blunderstone, Suffolk, near Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, in 1820, six months after the death of his father. David spends his early years in relative happiness with his loving but frail mother and their kindly housekeeper, Peggotty. When he is seven years old his mother marries Edward Murdstone. David is given good reason to dislike his stepfather and has similar feelings for Murdstone's sister Jane, who moves into the house soon afterwards. Murdstone attempts to thrash David for falling behind in his studies. David bites him and soon afterwards is sent away to a boarding school, Salem House, with a ruthless headmaster, Mr. Creakle. The novel has been adapted into several plays and for the screen at least twelve times.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. It's important, when reading this, to remember that "David Copperfield" was originally published in 20 monthly installments, rather than as a single work of fiction. Each installment was only 3 to 4 chapters long, and the final two installments were released together as a double-volume. This was kind of like 19th-century Netflix; you got to watch the two-part series finale all at once rather than have to wait another week to see how it all turned out. When read as a single novel, there's a fair bit of repetition involved (and Dickens famously was paid by the word, which led to the invention of such loquacious characters as Mr. Micawber, who never uses five words when 50 would suffice). I read it basically a chapter a day, with most chapters taking up about 30 minutes of my time. In this method I still got through the book faster than the 19th-century target audience would have done, but still got to live with the story for more than two months of my life. I felt somewhat bereft when it was all over. While "David Copperfield" is deemed highly literary today, it was also the cutting edge of popular entertainment when it was written and released. The book follows David Copperfield (whose life, in many respects, followed the broad contours of Dickens' own life) from birth through adulthood. There are many self-contained episodes throughout the book, but there's also a fairly regular cast of characters who show up in every installment. Each of these characters are vividly portrayed, and quite memorable: David's childhood nurse, Peggotty, and her extended family; David's two school classmates, Steerforth and Traddles, whose lives go off in quite different directions; Agnes, Dora, and Emily, the three women in David's life; Aunt Betsey and Mr. Dick, who serve both as comic relief and as David's moral compasses; and the Murdstones and Uriah Heep, because every story needs despicable villains. You won't forget many of these people in a hurry.

Book excerpt: This could be the height or the depth of Dickens' art. It is up to you.David Copperfield is such an empty vessel, such s pliable lump of clay. How could anyone take interest in him?He does not mark the world but seems to take on the shape impressed on him by those around him. He does not affect the world but is affected by it. If you stop there,, he is the most boring character in the world. But if you watch closely, you will see that he gathers shape from the honest and good hearted around him and seems unaffected by the cruel and heartless people around him. As he grows, he becomes more worthy and more a magnet to the honest and. good hearted. As he becomes more worthy, his story becomes more profound and insightful, if you can see it. Is Dickens a moldy 18th century relic or a mirror to wholeness and richness in your life? It is more up to you than to Dickens.
