Book excerpt: Bowen turned to writing in 1930, using his prestige as editor-in-chief of Aviation Magazine to write Flying From The Ground Up, a non-fiction work on how to fly an airplane. He began freelancing for pulp magazines. In 1934, he started his own pulp magazine, Dusty Ayres And His Battle Birds, for Popular Publications. Twelve issues were released, the first eleven published monthly from July 1934 through July 1935, with most issues released monthly. Bowen continued writing for mystery, adventure, sports, and aviation pulp magazines through the 1950s. After the invasion of Poland by Germany in 1939 sparked World War II, Crown Publishers called Bowen, asking for an adventure story based on the war. The Dave Dawson series, also known as the War Adventure series, was the result. Bowen got to work immediately, and the first book, Dave Dawson At Dunkirk, was published in 1941. A total of 15 volumes were released between 1941 and 1946.

Book excerpt: This is the 15th and final book in the series. The Dave Dawson War Adventure Series encompasses 15 novels about young Dave Dawson, just our of high school and following his father to Europe at the start of the conflict that would become World War 2. After befriending a young English lad, Freddy Farmer, the two teens find themselves fighting along side the brave British troops determined to keep the Nazis from ever setting foot on English soil. Through the series they do not age but do travel around a lot taking part in such operations ad Dunkirk, Guadalcanal and Truk Island. They distinguish themselves as they fly and shoot down the enemy whether they are on European soil, in the Pacific or even at home where Nazi infiltrators are bent on wrecking havoc. The two lads make a name for themselves, form an unbreakable friendship, and fight against the odds. overcoming them at the very last moment. As with many series for young boys, the themes are built around patriotism and bravery, friendship and loyalty. And, while some of the references might seem rude or racist, they were products of the time in which they were authored. That author, Robert Sidney Bowen, was an American teenager when he flew for the Royal Air Force during World War 1. He became a journalist and author starting at the end of the war in England and later in Chicago. He was responsible for at least three series of adventures for boys plus numerous individual books built around his love of sports. He was active from 1930 (at the age of 20) until his final book, Hot Rod Doom, in 1973, just six years before his death.Millions of his books were sold when first published or republished and some are still available today as used books and as new publications, however many of these new releases have been edited for spelling mistakes and errors in typesetting, plus many do not include any of the original cover art.Thackery Fox & Associates is proud to offer these low-cost editions using scanned text mostly from first editions that-for historical reasons-include all the typesetting mistakes and strange spellings of the day that seem wrong to us now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite efforts of contemporary reformers to curb the availability of dime novels, series books, and paperbacks, Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes reveals how many readers used them as means of resistance and how fictional characters became models for self-empowerment. These literary genres, whose value has long been underestimated, provide fascinating insight into the formation of American popular culture and identity. Through these mass-produced, widely read books, Deadwood Dick, Old Sleuth, and Jessie James became popular heroes that fed the public’s imagination for the last western frontier, detective tales, and the myth of the outlaw. Women, particularly those who were poor and endured hard lives, used the literature as means of escape from the social, economic, and cultural suppression they experienced in the nineteenth century. In addition to the insight this book provides into texts such as “The Bride of the Tomb,” the Nick Carter Series, and Edward Stratemeyer’s rendition of the Lizzie Borden case, readers will find interesting information about: the roles of illustrations and covers in consumer culture Bowling Green’s endeavor to digitize paperback and pulp magazine covers bibliographical problems in collecting and controlling series books the effects of mass market fiction on young girls Louisa May Alcott’s pseudonym and authorship of three dime novels special collections competition among publishers A collection of work presented at a symposium held by the Library of Congress, Pioneers, Passionate Ladies, and Private Eyes makes an outstanding contribution to redefining the role of popular fiction in American life.

Book excerpt: Aviation books were a unique and prolific subgenre of American juvenile literature from the early to mid-20th century, drawing upon the nation's intensifying interest. The first books of this type, Harry L. Sayler's series Airship Boys, appeared shortly after the Wright brothers' first successful flight in 1909. Following Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic, popular series like Ted Scott and Andy Lane established the "golden age" of juvenile aviation literature. This work examines the 375 juvenile aviation series titles published between 1909 and 1964. It weaves together several thematic threads, including the placement of aviation narratives within the context of major historical events, the technical accuracy in depictions of flying machines and the ways in which characters reflected the culture of their eras. Three appendices provide publication data for each series, a list of referenced aircraft and an annotated bibliography; there is a full index.

Book excerpt: ?In the early 1960s, a group of students at UBC started a magazine called Tish. The name was purposefully an anagram of shit, in order to demonstrate their youthful and iconoclastic attitude. In many ways, Tish, and its editors, became the clear break from older Canadian poets and styles. At the heart of the magazine, and the movement, was Frank Davey. And it is Davey who has written this definitive history. Davey has organized the material as a memoir, starting from his own early days in Abbotsford, B.C., and gradually introducing the other poets, including George Bowering, Daphne Marlatt, and Fred Wah, despite the fact that Davey doesn't meet them until they all arrive at UBC. Much of the theory of the Tish poets derives from the Black Mountain poets, an American movement that incorporated the writings of Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan who suggested the name itself. The Black Mountain poets believed that writing should be locally based and should grow out of t

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the best-known and most popular children's stories of the 20th and early 21st century were written by veterans of World War I and World War II. These include works by such writers as A.A. Milne, C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl, Ian Fleming, and J.R.R. Tolkien, among others. Although they had experienced war, most of the veterans did not overtly write about it. The seeming paradox of warriors who went through searing combat and then wrote books for children has not been addressed collectively before now. The essays in this book explore what motivated these veterans to write for children, what they wrote, and how their writing was influenced by the wars they lived through. It examines how their combat experience can be traced in their writing, however subtly, whether it was stories about a bear and his piglet companion, a World War I flying ace, or a flying car. Their reactions to war, as reflected in their writing, yield important lessons about the complicated legacy of the 20th century's two great conflicts and their long-lasting impact--through children--on society at large.
