The most common source of formal help was from school personnel (9.2%), followed by social services (4.7%). The most common sources of informal help were friends (42.9%). When examining cultural factors, being more Latino oriented was associated with decreased odds of experiencing any dating violence. In relation to help-seeking, a one-unit increase in familism was associated with higher odds of formal help-seeking than not seeking formal help. While depression, anxiety, and hostility were associated with various forms of dating violence victimization, they were best explained by the count of all victimizations. In regards to school outcomes, experiencing physical dating violence was related to receiving special education services. Experiencing victimization also generally increased the odds of engaging in delinquency. Social support was related to decreased odds all types of dating violence. In some cases, it also moderated the effects of dating violence on certain outcomes (e.g., hostility). Overall, results suggest Latino youth have significant comorbid victimization and are most likely to seek informal help from friends rather than formal outlets. However, when formal resources are used, schools appear to be the primary point of contact. The use of informal help-seeking as a gateway to formal help is recommended. In addition, the role of Latino orientation and social support appears to be important in diminishing victimization risk and the negative impact of interpersonal violence among these youth.

Dating violence takes three major forms, namely physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. This project sought to explore the challenges associated with teen dating violence among Latino teens. The review of the literature utilized a vast array of information such as secondary statistical data, documented interviews, peer reviewed articles and insight from experts. There is evidence to suggest plausible correlations between background, socioeconomic status, social environment, and drug abuse. An intervention was created to educate Latino youth on teen dating violence and offer support to prevent abuse from occurring and/or continuing."--Abstract, p. 1.

Book excerpt: "Adolescent Dating Violence: Outcomes, Challenges and Digital Tools summarizes the latest discussion about challenges in adolescent dating violence (DV) and digital dating abuse (DDA), emphasizing the influence of digital tools and seeking to identify similarities and differences between online and offline types of abuse. The first introductory chapter presents an overview of outcomes and future challenges of dating abuse in adolescents, focusing on the recent studies and examining prevalence, risk and protective factors and consequences of DV. Chapter two addresses a research involving quantitative and qualitative complementary studies with participants involved in same-sex relationships, aiming to give a more complete portrait of another aspect involved in the dating violence problem. The third chapter discusses the psychological traits of the adolescents perpetrating dating violence in order to identify the problematic characteristics that are related to the abuse and provide the most accurate intervention in terms of prevention. Chapter four introduces the problematic use of digital tools, explaining how they can foster abuse in the context of dating relationships, focusing on the prevalence and impacts of this emergent important phenomenon. Chapter five discusses sexting, an emerging phenomenon in dating relationships, associated with new psychosocial and digital risks. This new form of online sexual violence may increase the vulnerability of adolescent at a crucial stage in their sexual-affective development. Accordingly, the practices of sexting and its meaning in the dating relationship are characterized. Cyberbullying is another abusive typology that has been related to DDA, which is given special focus and attention in chapter six. Finally, the last chapter intends to review evidence-based DDA intervention and prevention, considering the different variables related to them, specifically the sociodemographic, risk and protective factors"--

Book excerpt: Victims of teen dating violence (TDV) in the United States engage in risk behaviors that increase their vulnerability to ill health. Although teen dating violence affects millions of adolescents of diverse ethnic backgrounds, there is a higher prevalence of TDV among Blacks and Latinos. In order to develop effective interventions for diverse populations, it is critical to understand the risk behaviors associated with different victims of TDV. The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether there is a difference between the risk behaviors (alcohol abuse, illegal drug use and perilous sexual intercourse) engaged in by Black, Latino and White adolescent victims of TDV. The national 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) was the source of data. This thesis hypothesizes that there are different risk behaviors related to each ethnic group, and aims to provide information to support the development of culturally competent TDV interventions.

The majority of the participants engaged in substance use with more than half using two or more substances within the past 30 days. Psychological teen dating violence was the most reported type of victimization and perpetration. Implications for social work and future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Latina adolescents are more likely to be the victims of teen dating violence (TDV) than non-Latina White adolescent girls in the United States, (11.5% vs. 8%). A need exists to understand how culture impacts Latina adolescents' ability to communicate about dating violence with their parents and/or other authority figures. An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with English speaking Latina adolescents, ages 15-19 years, who were attending an urban alternative high school in King County, Washington. Most of the girls were born in the U.S. (55%) and the rest were immigrants, most commonly from Mexico. Almost all the girls' parents emigrated from Latin America. The six focus groups examined participants' knowledge of TDV, how culture impacts TDV, and whether cultural factors affect communication with parents and other authority figures. The participants discussed their knowledge and beliefs, cultural factors, and recommendations for Latina specific prevention programs. The girls were knowledgeable about dating violence. One-half of Latina adolescents had either experienced TDV themselves, or had a family member or close friend who had experienced it. The girls report that cultural issues affect their ability to communicate about dating violence with parents and other authority figures. These cultural factors include biculturalism, collectivism, familism, and machismo. The girls also suggest ways to improve prevention programs and recruit participants. The findings indicate that cultural factors are an important consideration in Latina adolescent communication with parents and authority figures when it comes to TDV. Latina adolescents would benefit from future TDV prevention programs that are culturally tailored and which address these cultural factors.

Book excerpt: Abuse in dating relationships is common among adolescents. Dating abuse has a plethora of negative associated conditions or consequences. Despite the high prevalence rates and deleterious effects, however, teen dating abuse has been slow to gain recognition as a critical public-health and policy concern. Adult intimate-partner violence and marital abuse more generally have gained such recognition, as seen, especially in the past three decades, in policy, program, and legal responses, and in an extensive research literature base devoted to the problem. Adolescents, by comparison, were long overlooked as a population that suffers from relationship abuse. This book assesses and reviews research in teen dating violence.

Book excerpt: Americans have long recognized that investments in public education contribute to the common good, enhancing national prosperity and supporting stable families, neighborhoods, and communities. Education is even more critical today, in the face of economic, environmental, and social challenges. Today's children can meet future challenges if their schooling and informal learning activities prepare them for adult roles as citizens, employees, managers, parents, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. To achieve their full potential as adults, young people need to develop a range of skills and knowledge that facilitate mastery and application of English, mathematics, and other school subjects. At the same time, business and political leaders are increasingly asking schools to develop skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and self-management - often referred to as "21st century skills." Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century describes this important set of key skills that increase deeper learning, college and career readiness, student-centered learning, and higher order thinking. These labels include both cognitive and non-cognitive skills- such as critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, effective communication, motivation, persistence, and learning to learn. 21st century skills also include creativity, innovation, and ethics that are important to later success and may be developed in formal or informal learning environments. This report also describes how these skills relate to each other and to more traditional academic skills and content in the key disciplines of reading, mathematics, and science. Education for Life and Work: Developing Transferable Knowledge and Skills in the 21st Century summarizes the findings of the research that investigates the importance of such skills to success in education, work, and other areas of adult responsibility and that demonstrates the importance of developing these skills in K-16 education. In this report, features related to learning these skills are identified, which include teacher professional development, curriculum, assessment, after-school and out-of-school programs, and informal learning centers such as exhibits and museums.
