Book excerpt: Becks: How does a straight guy accidentally come out as gay to the entire country music world? I'll get back to you when I know the answer. It all happened so fast. One moment, my best friend's little brother is standing in a sea of people as his boyfriend breaks his heart. Again. The next, I'm jumping off stage mid-concert to give him the kiss of his life--or maybe the kiss of my life. I'm Beckett Anderson. Yes, that Beckett. The one who never does the smart thing, messes up daily, and somehow ended up with millions of screaming fans. Fans who now think I'm dating Nicky St. Germaine. The label says I can't come out as straight (Is that even a thing?), that I can't tell the world I lied. But this lie of mine... it doesn't hold a candle to the one I tell myself. Nicky: How does the quiet gay guy end up kissing the straight country music star in front of thousands of his screaming fans? I still can't fathom what he was thinking when he jumped off that stage, but that kiss... None of it was real, but it felt like it. At least to me. I'm Nicky St. Germaine, son of a football Hall of Famer, best friends with rock star, Nari Won Song--and whatever I am to country music sensation, Beckett Anderson. The jury's still out on that one. What does a small town kid do when so many of his friends and family are famous? He hides. Frequently. Now the spotlight is on me, and there is nowhere left to hide. I'm supposed to pretend to be Beckett's adoring boyfriend for a few weeks, but that's not so easy when I'd give almost anything for it to be true. Book one in the Discovering Me series, Dating Nashville is a sweet M/M romance with a cocky country star, a shy small-town boy, and enough sparks betweent them to make you swoon.

Book excerpt: "This book addresses a major need."-Christian Standard Reports from churches indicate that poor interpersonal relationships are the primary reasons for minister failure. Though they are taught the important skills of how to interpret the Bible, how to discern and articulate doctrine, how to direct worship services, and more, ministers are eventually faced with a congregation. While they may frequently call on some skills and others not at all, interpersonal relationship skills are vital to any ministry. This book is designed to aid ministers, seminary students, denominational leaders, and church members nurture their relationships with one another and with God, and to help the understanding of oneself and of others that is part of the minister's task. These essays, from the faculty of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, focus on four areas of concern: relationship with oneself, with family, in the church, and in the community. Above all, these lessons are devised to aid in nurturing a secure setting for effectiveness in the ministry and in service to God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Nashville's many slogans, the one that best reflects its emphasis on manners and decorum is the Nashville Way, a phrase coined by boosters to tout what they viewed as the city's amicable race relations. Benjamin Houston offers the first scholarly book on the history of civil rights in Nashville, providing new insights and critiques of this moderate progressivism for which the city has long been credited. Civil rights leaders such as John Lewis, James Bevel, Diane Nash, and James Lawson who came into their own in Nashville were devoted to nonviolent direct action, or what Houston calls the “black Nashville Way.” Through the dramatic story of Nashville's 1960 lunch counter sit-ins, Houston shows how these activists used nonviolence to disrupt the coercive script of day-to-day race relations. Nonviolence brought the threat of its opposite—white violence—into stark contrast, revealing that the Nashville Way was actually built on a complex relationship between etiquette and brute force. Houston goes on to detail how racial etiquette forged in the era of Jim Crow was updated in the civil rights era. Combined with this updated racial etiquette, deeper structural forces of politics and urban renewal dictate racial realities to this day. In The Nashville Way, Houston shows that white power was surprisingly adaptable. But the black Nashville Way also proved resilient as it was embraced by thousands of activists who continued to fight battles over schools, highway construction, and economic justice even after most Americans shifted their focus to southern hotspots like Birmingham and Memphis.

Book excerpt: With the very real possibility of nuclear war looming on the horizon from 1945 to the early 1960s, both federal and local governments took on the responsibility of educating Americans on how to survive the expected blasts, residual fallout, and radiation poisoning. Duck and cover drills, bomb shelters, and evacuation plans became an integral part of every citizen's daily life. This book provides a sampling of civil defense publications issued by government agencies and organizations during this era. Arranged thematically, the book includes sections covering the impact and power of the atomic bomb, radioactive fallout, women and the home, the importance of being prepared, civil defense in schools, fallout shelters, evacuation plans, and, finally, the call for "peace or ... else."
