Book excerpt: Creep-resistant steels are widely used in the petroleum, chemical and power generation industries. Creep-resistant steels must be reliable over very long periods of time at high temperatures and in severe environments. Understanding and improving long-term creep strength is essential for safe operation of plant and equipment. This book provides an authoritative summary of key research in this important area. The first part of the book describes the specifications and manufacture of creep-resistant steels. Part two covers the behaviour of creep-resistant steels and methods for strengthening them. The final group of chapters analyses applications in such areas as turbines and nuclear reactors. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Creep-resistant steels is a valuable reference for the power generation, petrochemical and other industries which use high strength steels at elevated temperatures. - Describes the specifications and manufacture of creep-resistant steels - Strengthening methods are discussed in detail - Different applications are analysed including turbines and nuclear reactors
Book Synopsis The Hot Universe by : Katsuji Koyama
Download or read book The Hot Universe written by Katsuji Koyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-07-31 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present decade is opening new frontiers in high-energy astrophysics. After the X-ray satellites in the 1980's, including Einstein, Tenma, EXOSAT and Ginga, several satellites are, or will soon be, simultaneously in orbit offering spectacular advances in X-ray imaging at low energies (ROSATj Yohkoh) as well as at high energies (GRANAT), in spectroscopy with increased bandwidth (ASCAj SAX), and in timing (XTE). While these satellites allow us to study atomic radiation from hot plasmas or energetic electrons, other satellites study nuclear radiation at gamma-ray energies (CGRO) associated with radioactivity or spallation reactions. These experiments show that the whole universe is emitting radiation at high energies, hence we call it the "hot universe. " The hot universe, preferentially emitting X- and gamma-rays, provides us with many surprises and much information. A symposium "The Hot Universe" was held in conjunction with the XXIIIrd General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, at Kyoto on August 26-30 in 1997. The proceedings are organized as follows. Synthetic view of "the hot universe" is discussed in Section 1, "Plasma and Fresh Nucleosynthesis Phenomena". Timely discussions on the strategy for future missions "Future Space Program" are found in Section 2. Then the contents are divided into two major subjects: the compact objects and thin hot diffuse plasmas. Section 3 is devoted to the category of compact objects which includes white dwarfs, neutron stars, and gravitationally collapsed objects: stellar mass black holes or active galactic nuclei.
Book Synopsis Corrosion by Carbon and Nitrogen by : H Grabke
Download or read book Corrosion by Carbon and Nitrogen written by H Grabke and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-08 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the factors affecting metal dusting and how it can be prevented in sectors such as the chemical and petrochemical industries and in the direct reduction of iron ores. It also considers the related corrosion phenomena of carburization and nitridation. Topics include: key processes involved in metal dusting; how this corrosion process affects a range of metals such as iron and steel, as well as nickel-based and chromium-based high-temperature alloys; effects of particular gas mixtures on the corrosion process and on the use of coatings to prevent metal dusting; processes involved in carburization and nitridation. --

Book Synopsis Creep in Metallic Materials by : Josef Čadek
Download or read book Creep in Metallic Materials written by Josef Čadek and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. The phenomenon of time-dependent plastic deformation of metallic materials under constant load at high temperatures has been documented for at least two centuries and is now termed high temperature creep. A better understanding of creep behaviour of metals and alloys is highly desirable, not only for predictions and thus more efficient exploitation of contemporary creep-resistant metallic materials, but also such an understanding may be of great help in designing new materials and their thermal and mechanical treatment. The aim of this monograph is to provide a comprehensive review of the current status of knowledge of mechanisms of high temperature creep, creep damage and creep fracture in metals and alloys. In the introductory chapters 1-6, the time dependence of creep strain, mechanical equation of state, dislocation motion in creep and dependence of creep rate on temperature, stress and some structure parameters are treated in a traditio

Download or read book Electrochemistry in Light Water Reactors written by R-W Bosch and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has long been a need for effective methods of measuring corrosion within light water nuclear reactors. This important volume discusses key issues surrounding the development of high temperature reference electrodes and other electrochemical techniques. The book is divided into three parts with part one reviewing the latest developments in the use of reference electrode technology in both pressurised water and boiling water reactors. Parts two and three cover different types of corrosion and tribocorrosion and ways they can be measured using such techniques as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Topics covered across the book include in-pile testing, modelling techniques and the tribocorrosion behaviour of stainless steel under reactor conditions. Electrochemistry in light water reactors is a valuable reference for all those concerned with corrosion problems in this key technology for the power industry. Discusses key issues surrounding the development of high temperature reference eletrodes A valuable reference for all concerned with corrosion problems in this key technology

Book Synopsis High Temperature Fatigue by : R.P. Skelton
Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue written by R.P. Skelton and published by Springer. This book was released on 1987-11-30 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 35 years ago, thermal fatigue was identified as an important phenomenon which limited the lifetime of high temperature plant. In the intervening years many investigations have been carried out, primarily to give guidance on likely endurance (especially in the presence of time dependent deformation) but latterly, with the introduction of sophisticated testing machines, to provide knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of failure. A previous edited book (Fatigue at High Temperature, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, 1983) summarised the state-of-the-art of high temperature fatigue testing and examined the factors influencing life, such as stress state, environment and microstructural effects. It also considered, in some detail, cyclic crack growth as a more rigorous approach to life limitation. The aim of the present volume (which in style and format follows exactly the same lines as its predecessor) is once again to pursue the desire to translate detailed laboratory knowledge into engineering design and assessment. There is, for example, a need to consider the limitations of the laboratory specimen and its relationship with engineering features. Many design procedures still rely on a simple endurance approach based on failure of a smooth specimen, and this is taken to indicate crack initiation in the component. In this volume, therefore, crack propagation is covered only incidentally, emphasis being placed instead on basic cyclic stress strain properties, non-isothermal behaviour, metallography, failure criteria and the need for agreed testing procedures.
