Book excerpt: Project Report from the year 2017 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 8.9, SRM University, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the mechanical, microstructural and fatigue analysis of welded joints. In the study, 6061-T6 aluminium alloy plates in 4mm thickness, that are particularly used for aerospace and in automotive industries, were welded using Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding and Friction Stir Welding (FSW) methods as similar joints with one side pass and parameters of varying tool rotation, weld speed and 2.3 degree tool tilt angle. The weld zones cross sections were analysed with light optical microscopy (LOM). During recent years several investigations have been made of fatigue properties of friction stir welded joints. The great majority of available data from the fatigue analysis of friction stir welded joints are concerned with uniaxial loading conditions for a simple geometry. In uniaxial loading nominal stress is normally used as reference stress and it is easy to determine. However, fatigue failure is a highly localized phenomenon in engineering components and determining the nominal stress is not always possible due to the complexity of structures and presence of stress concentrators such as notches and cracks in which many approaches based on local parameters.
Book Synopsis Aluminum 7075-T6 Fatigue Data Generation and Probabilistic Life Prediction Formulation by : John G. Kemna

This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life extension of aging fleet aircraft requires an assessment of the safe-life remaining after refurbishment. Risk can be estimated by conventional deterministic fatigue analysis coupled with a subjective factor of safety. Alternatively, risk can be quantitatively and objectively predicted by probabilistic analysis. In this investigation, a general probabilistic life formulation is specialized for constant amplitude, fully reversed fatigue loading utilizing conventional breakdown laws applied to the general probability damage function. Experimental data was collected both as a bench mark data base, as well as an example of the implementation of probabilistic fatigue life prediction. Fully reversed, sinusoidal fatigue testing under load control was carried Out at load levels giving high cycle fatigue lives from 1 x 104 to 5 x 106 cycles. The number of replications at each stress level is greater than currently available in the literature, thereby increasing the confidence of predictions in the long-life domain, as well as extending the statistical basis for probabilistic inference. The load level data sets are interpreted by the probabilistic damage function for life location as well as life shape parameters using maximum likelihood analysis. Homologous life ranking and the minimum entropy hypothesis are investigated as well.

Book Synopsis Effects of Changing Stress Amplitude on the Rate of Fatigue-crack Propagation in Two Aluminum Alloys by : C. M. Hudson
Download or read book Effects of Changing Stress Amplitude on the Rate of Fatigue-crack Propagation in Two Aluminum Alloys written by C. M. Hudson and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of fatigue tests with specimens subjected to constant amplitude and two-step axial loads were conducted on 12-inch-wide sheet specimens of 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloy to study the effects of a change in stress level on fatigue-crack propagation. Comparison of the results of the tests in which the specimens were tested at first a high and then a low stress level with those of the constant-stress-amplitude tests indicated that crack propagation was generally delayed after the transition to the lower stress level. In the tests in which the specimens were tested at first a low and then a high stress level, crack propagation continued at the expected rate after the change in stress levels.

Book Synopsis Environmental Corrosion-fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloys by : D. N. Williams
Download or read book Environmental Corrosion-fatigue Behavior of Aluminum Alloys written by D. N. Williams and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of environment on fatigue behavior are quite intimately related to such test variables as stress intensity, cyclic frequency, and temperature. The effect of these variables has been shown to be quite complex. However, a consistent pattern of behavior is beginning to emerge which, it is hoped, will lead to a considerably changed understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process. It is considered probable that an increased understanding of the corrosion-fatigue process will also contribute measureably to an improved understanding of general fatigue processes. Material variables such as composition, directionality of properties, and microstructure, have important effects on corrosion-fatigue behavior of aluminum alloys. However, it appears that these variables, at least in gaseous environments, may be important largely because of their effects on the mechanical behavior of aluminum alloys. On the other hand, studies in seawater suggest that these variables become increasingly important as the corrosive nature of the environment increases. This memorandum discusses in detail the effects of both test variables and material variables on corrosion fatigue. In addition, current theories of corrosion-fatigue mechanisms are outlined, and several methods of preventing corrosion fatigue are suggested. (Author).

Book Synopsis Influence of Programing Techniques and of Varying Limit Load Factors on Maneuver Load Fatigue Test Results by : Patrick L. Corbin
Download or read book Influence of Programing Techniques and of Varying Limit Load Factors on Maneuver Load Fatigue Test Results written by Patrick L. Corbin and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variable-amplitude axial-load fatigue tests were conducted on 7075-T6 aluminum-alloy edge-notched specimens having a theoretical elastic stress concentration factor of 4. The load programs were designed to approximate maneuver load spectra. Fatigue life was found to be shorter for random form tests than for block form tests having the same load spectrum. The greatest change in life occurred when the test program contained negative loads. Life for variable-amplitude tests was found to increase as much as 60 percent above the original test life after preloading with a program having a higher limit load factor. The summations of cycle ratios were approximately 2 for tests without negative loads but were approximately 1 for tests with negative loads.

Book Synopsis Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data by : R. E. Little
Download or read book Statistical Analysis of Fatigue Data written by R. E. Little and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1981 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is commonly assumed in analysing fatigue data that there is a definite functional relationship between life in number of cycles and stress level. However, as has been pointed out several times (1, 2), an examination of the data shows considerable scatter. Even with carefully prepared smooth specimens, all from the same heat of steel, treated in the same manner and tested in the same laboratory, a range of 2 to 1 in number of cycles for failure at the same stress level is normal (1) and a range of 10 to 1 is not unusual (2). If the specimens are tested by different laboratories, slightly varying techniques will introduce further scatter (3).
