Book excerpt: HEP data structure systems, such as ADAMO, BOS, CHEETAH, JAZELLE, ZEBRA, etc., are not static but continue to evolve, some slowly, others more quickly. Large systems have been built on them, and by a careful comparison of their usage in experiments, one should be able to better understand which way to go. It is crucial to preserve the current investment while exploiting new computing technology.Experiments at large colliders are taking data and doing physics (or about to do so), so one can now compare practical experiences with different data management solutions in the area of: Simulation of Interactions and their Detection, Data Acquisition, On Line Management, Description of Detector and other Equipment, Experiment and Data Processing Bookkeeping, Reconstruction Algorithms, Event Display and Statistical Data Analysis. The articles in these proceedings are by contributors who are active in developing computer systems for Experimental Particle Physics where the organisation of the data plays an important role, as well as those who are building systems and packages to make this work easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very large number of channels and high data rates in modern particle physics experiments put very stringent requirements on the acquisition of data. To reduce the cost as well as the number of cables required to transport the data from detector to counting room, it is necessary to use very large scale integrated circuits for pre-processing the data right on the front-end circuit boards. Also, very high speed optoelectronic circuits are needed to transport the data on to the counting room from the front-end circuits. Two techniques relevant to data acquisition are discussed. The first is Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), including using the Very High Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) to program them. The second is the design of a very high speed optoelectronic circuit for data transport.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Due to its advantages of universality, flexibility and high performance, fast Ethernet is widely used in readout system design for modern particle physics experiments. However, Ethernet is usually used together with the TCP/IP protocol stack, which makes it difficult to implement readout systems because designers have to use the operating system to process this protocol. Furthermore, TCP/IP degrades the transmission efficiency and real-time performance. To maximize the performance of Ethernet in physics experiment applications, a data readout method based on the physical layer (PHY) is proposed. In this method, TCP/IP is replaced with a customized and simple protocol, which makes it easier to implement. On each readout module, data from the front-end electronics is first fed into an FPGA for protocol processing and then sent out to a PHY chip controlled by this FPGA for transmission. This kind of data path is fully implemented by hardware. From the side of the data acquisition system (DAQ), however, the absence of a standard protocol causes problems for the network related applications. To solve this problem, in the operating system kernel space, data received by the network interface card is redirected from the traditional flow to a specified memory space by a customized program. This memory space can easily be accessed by applications in user space. For the purpose of verification, a prototype system has been designed and implemented. Preliminary test results show that this method can meet the requirements of data transmission from the readout module to the DAQ with an efficient and simple manner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the fundamentals of particle detectors in their different forms as well as their applications, presenting the abundant material as clearly as possible and as deeply as needed for a thorough understanding. The target group for the book are both, students who want to get an introduction or wish to deepen their knowledge on the subject as well as lecturers and researchers who intend to extent their expertise. The book is also suited as a preparation for instrumental work in nuclear, particle and astroparticle physics and in many other fields (addressed in chapter 2). The detection of elementary particles, nuclei and high-energetic electromagnetic radiation, in this book commonly designated as 'particles', proceeds through interactions of the particles with matter. A detector records signals originating from the interactions occurring in or near the detector and (in general) feeds them into an electronic data acquisition system. The book describes the various steps in this process, beginning with the relevant interactions with matter, then proceeding to their exploitation for different detector types like tracking detectors, detectors for particle identification, detectors for energy measurements, detectors in astroparticle experiments, and ending with a discussion of signal processing and data acquisition. Besides the introductory and overview chapters (chapters 1 and 2), the book is divided into five subject areas: - fundamentals (chapters 3 to 5), - detection of tracks of charged particles (chapters 6 to 9), - phenomena and methods mainly applied for particle identification (chapters 10 to 14), - energy measurement (accelerator and non-accelerator experiments) (chapters 15, 16), - electronics and data acquisition (chapters 17 and 18). Comprehensive lists of literature, keywords and abbreviations can be found at the end of the book.

Book excerpt: This volume is an exercises and solutions manual that complements the book "Particles and Fundamental Interactions" by Sylvie Braibant, Giorgio Giacomelli, and Maurizio Spurio. It aims to give additional intellectual stimulation for students in experimental particle physics. It will be a helpful companion in the preparation of a written examination, but also it provides a means to gaining a deeper understanding of high energy physics. The problems proposed are sometimes true and important research questions, which are described and solved in a step-by-step manner. In addition to the problems and solutions, this book offers fifteen Supplements that give further insight into topical subjects related to particle accelerators, signal and data acquisition systems and computational methods to treat them.

While assuming that the reader is familiar with the basics of sampling theory and analog-to-digital conversion, the attention is focused on applied research and industrial applications of data acquisition. Even in the few cases when theoretical issues are investigated, the goal is making the theory comprehensible to a wide, application- oriented, audience.
